3 Healthy Strategies to Counteract Feelings of Helplessness | Grow through What You're Going through A lot can happen in a day that we have no control over. This can be especially challenging when we ourselves are impacted by the outcome, and the outcome is largely outside our realm of control. With a focus on the end result we're looking for, and the miles that exist between where we want to be and this present moment... it's easy to feel helpless. Many of us do. Many of us forgot a time where we didn't feel helpless, and much of the things we do and choose not to do stem from how we've learned to manage that sense of helplessness. Having been stalked by my professor at UofT's Rotman's School of management for the last four years, across country and several other countries, I'm well acquainted with the feeling. Knowing Where to Turn to in Difficulty | The Power of Social Participation in Eco-Systems of Support There's so much more to the world we live in, than the corner that our lives occupy. Oftentimes, we find ourselves so busy in the routines that we've established, we forget that there are other ways we can spend our time. There are eco-systems of different communities taking place around us each day. Some of them operating within our neighbourhoods, entirely unbeknownst to us. Part of how we uncover some of these programs is through our active participation. Recognizing that being social, often extends beyond recreational, and if we find a niche that enables us, why not? It's often the paradox that we end up serving ourselves, the more we position ourselves to be of service to others. I can say personally, were it not for my own social participation and volunteer efforts, I wouldn't have known certain programs were available -- when I needed them the most. Let Go of What Was Never in Your Realm of Control | Leveraging the Power Inherent In Your Reactions Extreme situations will teach you that not a lot is within your control. Often times we nourish this sense of control, and reinforce the belief that we're in control, because much of life tends to go as planned. What if I told you the best thing you can do is to liberate yourself from that belief? You increase your ability to be flexible and to adapt to any shift and change in circumstance, when you realize that the only area where self-mastery is required in this life is your reaction. We have control of how we respond and how we react to the challenges that we face in this life. The moment we spend less time focusing on external factors, and more time focusing on how we cultivate that inner governance - we increase our own odds of survival, and we change the game. I believe that this is the single most important factor that enabled me to survive four years of being stalked, terrorized and intimidated across Canada, and throughout several countries across the ocean, too. Learning to Sit in Uncomfortable Truths | Develop the Capacity to Hold Space for Traumatic Realities Many of us have had specific experiences, whether our own or of those that we know personally, that have shaken us to our core. Whether it was coming to terms with an illness, a violent occurrence, or a death -- proximity to these situations has the power to change our perceptions, permanently. This are the life events that have the power to enable us to come out stronger, or have the capacity to break us. It is important that we learn to accept that reality is what it is, even if that is miles away from the reality we idealize. The best way to bring the life that we envision into existence, is to build a bridge between the realities we philosophize about, and the realities we know have the potential to create positive impact. Many of us make choices as to where we spend our time when we feel that the spoken culture aligns with our inherent values and beliefs. How any company or school markets itself, is driving millions of decisions to-date. So what happens in those cases where culture fails to live up to your expectations? How I Discovered I was Being Stalked and Managed to Stay a Few Steps Ahead | Tips on Digital Hygiene It has been two weeks since I posted my first video. In these videos, I've been speaking up about being stalked for the last four years by my professor at UofT and senior leader at McKinsey & Co Canada, Scott Rutherford. By progress, I mean: 1) No one from the University of Toronto has reached out to me to address these concerns 2) There has been no action or investigation launched against Scott Rutherford, the professor at Rotman's School of Management and senior leader at McKinsey & Co Canada who has dedicated the last four years to stalking, terrorizing and intimidation tactics involving the RCMP 3) There's been no formal address, whatsoever, to speak to the unspoken cost of entry, being violence - especially against women, at the leading business school of Canada Rotman's school of management Make no mistake, I am not the first woman to experience violence at Rotman's School of Management, University of Toronto. I am however, the first to speak up about it because at this point, being silent (as many have callously suggested), will cost me my life. I have already survived four programs for women escaping violence before relocating to Portugal. Silence enables the abusers - who are celebrated, commemorated, and enabled to perpetuate more violence towards women, and vulnerable persons. While I had no choice in being the target of such a vicious and prolonged attack, I have never been the type to go "silently into the night." Recognize that there are other women who are enduring violence, who are reading your commentary, who are either gaining courage or losing hope based on the advice you chose to share. I will keep posting these videos until there is transparency, accountability, and traction in creating policy and establishing standards that protect women who are integrated into these programs. The inclusion and diversity that the University of Toronto boasts of having, carries little weight when the unspoken cost of entry is violence. That is not a price I ever agreed to pay. Creating a Safe Space to Share Our Experiences on Violence & Trauma | Baseline Tenets of Empathy I want to start off by thanking everyone who has taken the time to listen to my experience, and for holding space for me while I spoke vulnerably, about my experience being stalked for the last four years. As we continue to engage in dialogue, I just ask that we be intentional with how we position our thoughts and opinions about what behaviours attract trauma. In all cases, correlation is not causation and speaking out about violence that dehumanizes, degrades and demeans is its own very real challenge. Speaking Up & Speaking Out About My 4-Year Strong Stalking Nightmare: UofT Professor & RCMP Officer I spoke out about how I've spent the last four years to-date getting stalked by my professor University of Toronto's Rotman's School of Management, Scott Rutherford. I was also vocal about meeting an RCMP officer who contributed to the silencing campaign, Alex Lamb. I spoke candidly about how the behaviours and actions of both of these influential and powerful men, were the reason why I cycled through four programs for women escaping violence, and moved abroad - where the stalking has continued. When those Who Serve & Protect, Seek to Smear and Silence Your Voice | My 4-Year Stalking Nightmare In the same year, fateful 2020, I made the choice to go no contact with abusive family members, and ended up needing to go on the run because of a stalker. While most people will speak on being stalked by a stranger or a romantic partner -- the stalker that has persecuted me for the last four years + was neither. He was my mentor, from the Leadership Development Lab at Rotman's School of Management in University of Toronto. If matters could not get any worse, while on the run, I sought the support of the RCMP - thinking this nightmare would come to an end sooner than it began. That didn't happen. Silence Doesn't Support Your Well-Being | My UofT Professor Continues to Get Away with Stalking Me Does anyone else hope that if they say nothing and do nothing, that problems might magically disappear? That was my hope. All to say, 4 years later and I've come to the realization that I was wrong. When it comes to matters of safety - silence is never the answer. It's never an easy decision to speak up and to speak out when you're already being subjected to violence. For those who have endured any level of physical, emotional, psychological, or any other form of abuse, there's a huge risk that comes with speaking up, when you have limited options to escape the people who seem dedicated to hurting you. As someone who has not only moved cross country (from Toronto to Vancouver Island) to escape violence, to then try and find amnesty living abroad, I'm more aware than most at how impossible it feels to escape someone who thinks they own you. Being the subject matter expert in a given topic is an opportunity to lend insight, support, and perspective for ongoing developments within your area of expertise. Many of us have such deep knowledge in a given area, we forgot that getting to this area of "know how" was a process 😩 When we step outside of our comfort zone and given ourselves the opportunity to learn something new, and find ourselves struggling... rather than be discouraged, stay motivated 😊 Some concepts take time to understand, and the more challenging the learning process, the more you've given yourself an opportunity to develop proficiency in an area that doesn't come easily to you. Breaking free from toxic relationships will be the best choice you'll ever make for yourself, while also being a difficult decision to execute without a plan. Power is never lost without a battle. In anticipating there being a war waged when cutting ties for your own mental health, you can minimize the damage earlier on. Helpful Ways to Cope with Helplessness | Challenging Limiting Beliefs and Harnessing Inner Alignment We've all at some point experienced a sense of helplessness.Whether it was a result of our sense of our own ability to perform or to execute, or if it was being faced with a situation that seems beyond our ability to cope.We're never as helpless as we think. Helplessness can be learned through the limiting beliefs we have about ourselves and how the world operates. Whether it was us, a trusted friend, or a family member that confined us to a box, and though miserable, we've made due.In other cases, helplessness can be how we feel about the situations, people, places and circumstances that are truly beyond our realm of control. We feel helpless because our focus is on the outcome, rather than our response and our reaction, and the ways that we can authentically inform that outcome, and find peace with how things turn out.In all cases, there are better ways of managing helplessness than allowing ourselves to feel crippled by worry, anxiety, and fear.Sometimes it's simply a matter of perspective Any questions?
