The San Francisco Giants made a much-needed strike late on Wednesday, agreeing to a six-year, $151 million extension with star third baseman Matt Chapman. Chapman has thrived in his first year with the SF Giants, producing 4.5 WAR per FanGraphs and 6.0 WAR per Baseball-Reference. Both figures would place Chapman as a top-five player in the National League this season.

Matt Chapman's six-year extension with the Giants takes him from his age-32 season (in 2025) through his age-37 season (in 2030). This extension between Chapman and the San Francisco Giants might look good for the first few years and bad for the last few, but that's a risk the Giants need to be willing to take for a player of this caliber who has the kind of reputation in the game that Chapman has earned.

Chapman has already stated that players have reached out to him via text stating a desire to play with him in San Francisco. He's also spent six seasons playing in the Bay Area, a region that he loves. Chapman should be able to help recruit players to the Giants not just because he's good and has a good reputation, but also because he can allay players' concerns about playing in San Francisco.

The San Francisco Giants' 2024-25 offseason, with Chapman now under a guaranteed $25M/year salary, is explored. The Giants figure to have $65M to $75M to spend in 2025 commitments in order to match this season's payroll, which is an estimated $207M, per FanGraphs.
