The San Francisco Giants made a much-needed strike late on Wednesday, agreeing to a six-year, $151 million extension with star third baseman Matt Chapman. Chapman has thrived in his first year with the SF Giants, producing 4.5 WAR per FanGraphs and 6.0 WAR per Baseball-Reference. Both figures would place Chapman as a top-five player in the National League this season.Matt Chapman's six-year extension with the Giants takes him from his age-32 season (in 2025) through his age-37 season (in 2030). This extension between Chapman and the San Francisco Giants might look good for the first few years and bad for the last few, but that's a risk the Giants need to be willing to take for a player of this caliber who has the kind of reputation in the game that Chapman has earned.Chapman has already stated that players have reached out to him via text stating a desire to play with him in San Francisco. The San Francisco Giants are going nowhere in 2024. Their playoff odds after their latest loss are just 0.1%, according to FanGraphs. With that in mind, the SF Giants did the right thing by recalling Marco Luciano and Luis Matos from Triple-A Sacramento. Now the Giants and manager Bob Melvin need to let the kids play.Whether or not they fail, it's time to see what Luciano and Matos can do. Luciano, in particular, hasn't been given much of a runway for takeoff at the MLB level. His walk rate in Triple-A was  very impressive this year, although his overall offensive line was mediocre for the league. He's also shifted over to second base, a spot that was cleared when the Giants outrighted Thario Estrada. Luciano looked rough in the field yesterday, but they need to keep playing him to see what he can and can't handle defensively.Tristan Beck made his long-awaited season debut last night and looked very sharp and impressive. He allowed a solo homer and a couple of other baserunners, but his stuff looked good and he looked like a starting rotation candidate down the stretch and in 2025. Fellow starter Blake Snell, meanwhile, won the NL pitcher of the month award for August. The San Francisco Giants fell to the Miami Marlins tonight at Oracle Park, final score 4-3. Mason Black got the start for the San Francisco Giants and he pitched great in his return from AAA. He spun five innings while striking out six and walking none, but also gave up two runs on Griffin Conine's first career big league home run before exiting. A bad call in the 7th inning that went against the San Francisco Giants ultimately played a huge role in the outcome tonight, as Tyler Fitzgerald was ruled to be in the basepath of the Marlin's baserunner attempting to steal 2nd base. The runner was clearly out on the play, and Fitzgerald did not appear to be impeding his progress. The San Francisco Giants made headlines the other day, placing Thairo Estrada, Taylor Rogers, and Tyler Matzek on irrevocable waivers. This meant that any team could claim any of those players, and they'd immediately no longer be members of the SF Giants. Yesterday, however, the Giants announced that they'd outrighted Estrada to Triple-A Sacramento, meaning that he went unclaimed and is now off the 40-man roster. Matzek went unclaimed and was placed on unconditional release waivers. No announcement was made on Rogers, which likely means he went unclaimed and will remain on the Giants roster. Rogers is under contract for $12 million next year.Matt Chapman delivered a huge three-run double with two outs and two strikes in the eighth inning as the Giants beat the Marlins 3-1. Up to that point, it has been another frustrating night for the SF Giants' offense, but Chapman's hit was, in the words of Giants broadcaster Mike Krukow, "therapeutic." Chapman's big hit followed up another brilliant outing by Blake Snell, who, like Chapman, is all but certain to opt out and re-test the market this coming offseason.Speaking of the offseason, MLB Trade Rumors posted a late August free-agent power rankings list, and Snell and Chapman rank prominently. It will be interesting so see what the Giants do with both, and also in the middle infield with Estrada seemingly no longer in their plans. It's worth noting that the Giants recalled Brett Wisely, not Marco Luciano, in place of the outrighted Estrada. The San Francisco Giants' season is essentially over, and as a result they made a couple of significant roster decisions on Wednesday. Thairo Estrada and Taylor Rogers were placed on irrevocable waivers, according to Ken Rosenthal and Grant Brisbee of The Athletic, meaning they can be claimed by any team and the SF Giants would lose them.In Estrada's case, he's owed just over $800,000 for the remainder of the season and comes with two additional years of team control via arbitration. Estrada has been a steady contributor for the Giants, but his offense fell off a cliff in 2024. Still, his affordable salary and experience as a good major league player make him a candidate to be claimed. The move also indicates that the SF Giants didn't plan to tender him a contract for 2025, which suggests that they could look to upgrade in the middle infield in the offseason. Ha-Seong Kim (who's best friends with Giants outfielder Jung Hoo Lee) and Willy Adames make a lot of sense for the SF Giants as offseason targets.In Taylor Rogers' case, placing him on waivers has more to do with hoping that another team will take on his $12 million 2025 salary. Rogers has been good in 2024, but for whatever reason he hasn't seen a lot of high-leverage innings. He's owed just about $3M for the rest of the season (and would be eligible for a postseason roster), but any claiming team would be on the hook for next year's salary. The SF Giants are hoping Estrada, Rogers, and Tyler Matzek (who was also placed on waivers) all get claimed—otherwise they wouldn't have made these moves. All three are interesting in their own way, will be resolved tomorrow, and say a lot about the San Francisco Giants' intentions for 2025. Despite a resilient, home-run-fueled comeback win against the first-place Brewers, the San Francisco Giants' best efforts are likely too little too late. The Giants remain 5.5 games back of the Braves, whom they would lose to in the event of a tie, with just 29 games remaining. The SF Giants could go 20-9 the rest of the way and the Braves could go 15-15, and the Giants would still not pass the Braves in the standings.However, that doesn't mean positives can't be taken away from this season. Breakout seasons by Heliot Ramos and Tyler Fitzgerald are already very real positives to take away from 2024, and another young breakout could be happening before our eyes. With each passing day, Grant McCray seems to look more and more like he belongs in the majors. When you're fighting an uphill battle—as the San Francisco Giants have been virtually all season—you simply cannot afford to blow four-run leads in the 8th inning. The Giants led 5-1 in the 8th in Game 1 of their series against the Mariners, yet they still lost, setting up a series loss that may be the nail in the coffin for the SF Giants in 2024. They're five back with 30 to play, but a tie against the Braves (who currently hold the third wild card spot) would do them no good after the Giants lost 3/4 at home vs. Atlanta earlier this month).So, looking ahead and looking back, 2024 was largely about a couple of key breakouts. Specifically, Heliot Ramos and Tyler Fitzgerald burst onto the scene and appear to have established themselves as lineup mainstays in 2025 and beyond. This is a very welcome and positive development, as the SF Giants have had way too much trouble developing position player talent over the last decade-plus. Grant McCray is another player to watch over the season's final month. He had a nice series in Seattle, demonstrating plus defense, a great arm, and easy power. He's struck out way too much (39.5% of the time) but he's also exhibited tantalizing tools. The Giants signed Jung Hoo Lee to a six-year deal in the offseason, only to lose him to a season-ending shoulder injury, but he will be back next year. With Ramos and possibly McCray looking like mainstays, that could lead to Mike Yastrzemski, who just turned 34, being non-tendered in the offseason.
