Indian philosopher and mystic J. Krishnamurti says this is because these things are the product of human imagination. Imagination changes all the time but something that is beautiful always catches our attention, hence all sacred places pay a lot of emphasis on beauty. Krishnamurti says that we can become more aware by seeing beauty in literally anything if we pay enough attention to it.
