In the previous episode, we shared a story from the life of Dr Harivansh Rai Bachchan’s father, that how he alone stood up to a mob to stop a communal riot in their colony and was successful too. There was also a story about how adamant or determined Bachchan himself was as a young boy. Today, let’s hear another one from those days, essence of which is reflected in our poem today. पिछले अंक में हमने एक किस्सा सुनाया था श्री हरिवंश राय बच्चन के पिताजी का कि कैसे वो एक बार हिन्दू मुस्लिम दंगा रोकने के लिए स्वयं ही लाठी उठाकर खड़े हो गए थे और लोगों को समझाने में सफल भी रहे थे, और एक बात बच्चन बाबू की ज़िद के बारे में। चलिए आज के अंक में इसी तरह की एक और कहानी सुनते हैं। मगर उससे पहले उस बात से जुड़ी मधुशाला की ये कविता -

श्रम, संकट, संताप, सभी तुम भूला करते पी हाला, सबक बड़ा तुम सीख चुके यदि सीखा रहना मतवाला,

व्यर्थ बने जाते हो हिरजन, तुम तो मधुजन ही अच्छे, ठुकराते हिर मंदिर वाले, पलक बिछाती मधुशाला (५८)

and -

दुतकारा मस्जिद ने मुझको कहकर है पीनेवाला, ठुकराया ठाकुरद्वारे ने देख हथेली पर प्याला,

कहाँ ठिकाना मिलता जग में भला अभागे काफिर को? शरणस्थल बनकर न मुझे यदि अपना लेती मधुशाला (४६)
