Chewing the plot

Graham Cooling

On this show we look to dive into, deconstruct and devour stories. Be it a cultural icon, cult hit, classical novel or hit film we're here to find out more about our favorite narratives and figure out just what made them the icons they are.

Every month we take a look at a story, tale or icon or whatever from our cultural history of being human and break it down to some anecdotes and pop culture references. Not only giving you an over view the narrative itself but asking why it's had such an impact on our culture and society as it has!

Whilst also giving us an excuse to read a lot of books, watch a bunch of films and not feel like we wasted out lives.

So join us as we once again Chew the plot.

Episode 9 - I Kill Giants : Tik Tok it's school o'clock
this right we are covering the surprisingly divisive 2017 film and 2008 comic I Kill Giants. I say that as on initial impression I thought I knew what I was getting but turns out people also had that thought and disliked it for it but we'll get to more on that later!I Kill Giants is a somewhat describable as coming of age and looks at child phycology, loss and the emotional roller coaster of fantasy imagination in a more direct way than in our previous texts which have done this such as Peter Pan which only eluded to the idea. I Kill Giants tells the story of Barbara Thorson a young girl and her challenge in fighting titans and as this is a story with a sudden right turn within it I am going to stipulate again spoilers and if you don't want to have the film or comic ruined you should go watch or read it first before we dive into it. So settle in and enjoy this tale of fantasy and tragedy as we once again chew the plot.Music provided by: Square peopleTrack: I'm not nervousfreemusicarchive.org/music/Square_People/Mysteries_and_Secrets_Unzipped_Soundtrackhttps://www.imdb.com/title/tt4547194/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Kill_Giants_(film)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Kill_Giantshttps://www.indiewire.com/2018/03/anders-walter-i-kill-giants-interview-1201942590/https://www.theguardian.com/film/2018/apr/06/i-kill-giants-review-a-ginormous-waste-of-timehttps://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/i-kill-giants-2018https://www.commonsensemedia.org/movie-reviews/i-kill-giantshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Runeshttps://sonsofvikings.com/blogs/history/viking-runes-guide-runic-alphabet-meanings-nordic-celtic-letters See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Episode 7 - Peter Pan : No one comes of of this good.
This wee we dive into the classic tale from J M Barrie focused mainly on the story structure of the also classic Walt Disney film Peter Pan!Pan is now a story in the public domain and has been one prone to discussion because of the many overlapping themes and undertones which run within it but the original auther himself has an interesting back story which leans into just why Peter Pan is so open to interpretation. So this week Charlotte brings us our childhood as we dive into the fantasy, pirates and racism inherent in the film adaption. We look at the mythos of pan and Graham attempt to not ruin the story which has brought so many joy and yet ends up doing so anyway!Music provided by: Square peopleTrack: I'm not nervousfreemusicarchive.org/music/Square_People/Mysteries_and_Secrets_Unzipped_SoundtrackSources and further readingPan https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3332064/Peter Pan https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0316396/Hook https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hook_(film)Walt Disney's peter pan https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0046183/https://disney.fandom.com/wiki/Peter_Pan_(character)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J._M._Barriehttps://www.britannica.com/biography/J-M-Barriehttps://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2004/11/22/lost-boyshttps://www.biography.com/news/peter-pan-jm-barrie-facts-biographyhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_termination_policyhttps://www.nlm.nih.gov/nativevoices/timeline/488.html See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Episode 6 - Ghost world: I can see why people like it but that's why I hate it.

Episode 6 - Ghost world: I can see why people like it but that's why I hate it.
This week Graham is back in the driving seat and once again comes up with something divisive. Ever the hipster child he is a fan fan of independent cinema and media so this this week we have chosen Ghost world the 2001 film by Terry Zwigoff also coupled with the graphic novel version by Daniel Clowes. The pair worked closely on this and as such they can both be considered canon.Having been a cult classic within the comic and film community for years it's still very much a niche film fraught with angst, negative character traits and uncomfortable situations but with bold characters and snarky teens where can you go wrong? So catch up this week as we learn we have very different views on high-school, different takes on characters and consider just what it takes to be cool when everything sucks.Music provided by: Square peopleTrack: I'm not nervousfreemusicarchive.org/music/Square_People/Mysteries_and_Secrets_Unzipped_SoundtrackSources usedGhost world the graphic novel by Daniel Cloweshttps://www.imdb.com/title/tt0162346/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_World_(film)https://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/ghost-world-2001https://www.criterion.com/films/28687-ghost-worldhttps://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/films/features/ghost-world-film-thora-birch-interview-b1815277.htmlhttps://www.dazeddigital.com/artsandculture/article/36002/1/three-things-you-never-knew-about-ghost-worldhttps://www.buzzfeed.com/tabathaleggett/facts-every-ghost-world-fan-needs-to-know See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Episode 4 - Little Women : Laurie and the Limes
This week in the month of March we cover the eponymous March story "Little Women" by Louisa May Alcott.Little women originally published in 1868 has been reproduced and retold so many times in attempts to bring together the three books which make up the Little women story. It is seen as a formative book for many young woman and tells the tales of the "March's" a group of four sisters and their neighbor Laurie as they figure out how the world works for them and thus we dive into it. Discussing the effect of the story on different people of different ages as some love it some hate it, the complexity of the many many characters and how we pick our favorites from the cast we attempt to understand this romantic family period novel. We may have also broken Jen as this is one of her favourite books and the like vs dislike was slightly more stacked against than expected as we chewed the plot.Music provided by: Square peopleTrack: I'm not nervousfreemusicarchive.org/music/Square_People/Mysteries_and_Secrets_Unzipped_SoundtrackResources used:https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3281548/https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110367/https://www.nytimes.com/2019/12/23/movies/little-women-review.htmlhttps://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2019/12/little-women-awards-season-menhttps://www.amazon.co.uk/Little-Signet-Classics-Louisa-Alcott/dp/0451532082https://www.sparknotes.com/lit/littlewomen/https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Women See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
