EP 048: Self-Care is Recognizing Your Own Cognitive Dissonance

Healing While Discovering Yourself Podcast

As we begin a new year, there is a huge shift towards self-care. And while this is a welcomed shift, it is important to understand that self-care is more than bubble baths, massages, haircuts, manicures & pedicures.

Self-care is also about being able to identify your own weaknesses and areas of improvement. It's also about recognizing when you are cognitively dissonant.

In this week's episode, I'm sharing my own story about recognizing my cognitive dissonance, what exactly is cognitive dissonance which is something almost everyone experiences, why we engage in cognitive dissonant behavior, and some examples of cognitive dissonant behavior.

Dissonance is most painful, and we are most motivated to reduce it when one of the dissonant cognitions challenges our self-esteem (Aronson et al., 1969). In other words, it is not just any kind of inconsistency that causes dissonance, but actions or beliefs that challenge our very sense of self-worth.
