Friday AWE 050324- Mental Health-Parsons with Guest Speaker- Sharrell Troxler
The discussion began with an overview of rising mental health issues among children and youth, with nearly 1 in 5 experiencing disorders. Social isolation during the pandemic likely exacerbated conditions. Early support is important to avoid issues persisting into adulthood. The group discussed how to support children struggling with mental health. Asking children how they feel and being a safe person they can open up to was emphasized. Parents and communities must advocate for children and overcome the stigma around seeking help. Speakers addressed stigma around mental health in faith communities and communities of color. Normalizing discussion and seeking counseling were encouraged to help others. The harms of shaming children for struggles and the importance of empathy were raised. The pandemic took a toll on children's mental wellness through isolation, trauma, and disrupted development. Adults are also facing increased anxiety and panic attacks due to unresolved issues emerging. Long-term impacts on children's social skills will require community support. "Shopping" for the right counselor fit was advised to find someone a child is comfortable with. Counseling requires effort but helps process trauma. Both children and adults should seek help for issues rather than relying only on faith or self-care. Overall health requires addressing mental health proactively. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/tlfm/support
