Unlocking Inquiry Dr. David Thorstad’s Guide to Boundless Thinking

Unlocking Inquiry Dr. David Thorstad’s Guide to Boundless Thinking
Herbert Simon emphasized the shift in bounded rationality from substantive to procedural rationality. Substantive rationality focuses on what we should prefer or believe, while procedural rationality examines how we determine those preferences or beliefs. Simon argued that the key task for bounded rationality theories is to develop a framework for rational inquiry under constraints. "Inquiry Under Bounds" builds on this by proposing a five-point bounded rationality program rooted in cognitive science. Dr. David Thorstad advocates for a reason-responsiveness consequentialist approach, clarifying and defending core insights of bounded rationality and addressing recent epistemological debates. Dr. David Thorstad is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Vanderbilt University. He earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University and has been a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Global Priorities Institute, Oxford, and a Research Affiliate at the MINT Lab, Australian National University. His research focuses on epistemology and value theory, exploring bounded rationality, altruistic decision-making, and the ethics of emerging technologies. In this episode, Dr. David shares key insights from his acclaimed book, Inquiry Under Bounds. This podcast is brought to you by Global Management Consultancy. Reckoning with Climate Change: Auden Schendler’s Powerful Message from 'Terrible Beauty'
Let’s extend a warm welcome to Auden Schendler as he joins us on our podcast. Auden is the Senior Vice President of Sustainability at Aspen Skiing Company, leading initiatives in clean energy, policy advocacy, and climate activism. He spearheaded the only coal-mine-methane-to-electricity project in the U.S. and serves on the board of Protect Our Winters, mobilizing the outdoor industry as a political force. A former Rocky Mountain Institute research associate, Auden authored Getting Green Done and has been featured in major outlets like Businessweek and Fast Company. Named a "climate innovator" by TIME Magazine and a "climate saver" by the EPA, he has testified before Congress and spoken at institutions like Harvard, MIT, and Google. In this episode, Auden Schendler will share profound insights from his book, “Terrible Beauty: Reckoning with Climate Complicity and Rediscovering Our Soul.” Environmentalism has lost its way. Despite faithfully sorting waste, corporate pledges of carbon negativity, and widespread voluntary emissions-reduction programs, these efforts fail to address the civilizational threat of climate change. The uncomfortable truth, as Auden Schendler argues, is that much of modern environmentalism perpetuates a "big green lie," often crafted to protect the status quo rather than disrupt it. But amid this ineffectiveness, hope persists. Our love for family, friends, and future generations compels us to act. Reconciling our conscience with meaningful action is the path forward. How can we align our dreams with a genuine commitment to repair the world? Auden Schendler challenges us to rediscover purpose, passion, and a roadmap for impactful change. The Economics of Trust in Health Care-Seeking Behavior with Prof. Mario Macis
In this episode, Prof. Mario Macis will share valuable insights from his research, "The Role of Trust in Health Care-Seeking Behavior: Insights and Implications." Trust plays a vital but underexplored role in health care economics. Using a national survey of American adults, we find that trust strongly influences care-seeking behavior, independent of access or knowledge. Its impact rivals’ factors like income and education and is mediated by beliefs about system capabilities and personal discomfort with medical visits. Trust in doctors, nurses, and hospitals drives this association, unlike trust in insurers. Differences by age and political affiliation emerge, but not by race. These findings highlight trust's critical role in shaping health care utilization and its growing policy relevance. About the Guest: Prof. Mario Macis is a Professor of Economics at Johns Hopkins Carey Business School and Core Faculty at the Hopkins Business of Health Initiative. He is also affiliated with the JHU Berman Institute of Bioethics, National Bureau of Economic Research, and Institute of Labor Economics. Prof. Macis’s work contributes to the fields of health, labor, development, market design, and managerial economics. Prior to joining Carey, he was a faculty member at the University of Michigan, Ross School of Business. He received is PhD in Economics from the University of Chicago, Department of Economics. Prof. Macis has been a consultant for the World Bank, the International Labor Organization, the National Marrow Donor Program, the United Nations Development Programme and the World Health Organization.
