In this episode, Prof. Mario Macis will share valuable insights from his research, "The Role of Trust in Health Care-Seeking Behavior: Insights and Implications." Trust plays a vital but underexplored role in health care economics. Using a national survey of American adults, we find that trust strongly influences care-seeking behavior, independent of access or knowledge. Its impact rivals’ factors like income and education and is mediated by beliefs about system capabilities and personal discomfort with medical visits. Trust in doctors, nurses, and hospitals drives this association, unlike trust in insurers. Differences by age and political affiliation emerge, but not by race. These findings highlight trust's critical role in shaping health care utilization and its growing policy relevance.
