Hong Kong is widely known as the most expensive housing market in the world. For eight years in a row, it has been ranked as the least affordable housing market on Earth. Prices per square foot continue to rise, leaving many Hongkongers with no other option than to squeeze into small, cramped spaces. In some cases, Hongkongers are living in spaces as small as 75 to 140 square feet, which is about the size of an average parking space in the US. In the most extreme cases, people have resorted to living in homes the size of a coffin. This situation is having a drastic effect on the quality of life for many Hongkongers. To better understand why the housing market has become so expensive and how it is impacting people’s lives, I spent some time exploring the living situation in Hong Kong. To gain a deeper insight into the issue, watch the final episode of Borders Hong Kong. This episode dives into the root causes of the housing crisis and how it is affecting the lives of those living in Hong Kong.
