The chapter depicts the emotional departure of the Pandavas for their exile, marked by sorrow and lament among the people. Vidura narrates the scene to King Dhritarashtra, who becomes increasingly anxious upon hearing the citizens' disapproval. Sage Narada's prophecy of the Kauravas' eventual downfall further unsettles the king and his allies.

As Dhritarashtra grapples with his conscience, his advisor Vidura implores him to rectify the injustice done to the Pandavas. However, Dhritarashtra's attachment to his own sons blinds him to Vidura's counsel, leading to a rift between them. Dhritarashtra's remorse grows as he realizes the significance of Vidura's departure.

Meanwhile, Sage Maitreya advises Duryodhana to seek reconciliation with the Pandavas, but Duryodhana's arrogance leads to Maitreya cursing him. Dhritarashtra, recognizing the severity of the situation, apologizes to Maitreya, hoping to avert further calamity.
