Birth Agni

Divya Kapoor

This Podcast explores how indigenously Birth has always unfolded, among women - our tribe, where children could see how breastfeeding was done and how birth happened. This an attempt to fetch the stories of the past as well as bring out the new India’s Birth culture to expose the defining features in both. This shall join the dots to where the increasing problems of postpartum anxiety, rising rate of surgical births and poor breastfeeding outcomes are coming from.

Birth Agni - Agni meaning Fire, the Fire that brings us alive, transforms us and has the ability to burn. Birth is designed to affect a woman’s integrity. It is the fire of awakening that makes her life experience wholesome. Deep down her body knows what Birth is supposed to feel - a euphoria of bringing a new life on Earth. The cocktail of hormones are designed to give her a high.

However, birth today has quickly swayed away from a phase of joy to the one marked by Fear, the constant questioning of a woman’s capacity to Birth naturally and the ugly calculation of the  odds of a healthy baby at the expense of the mother’s health. We forget that their health is interlinked and flourish as a dyad.  In India, the urban rate of Cesarean Sections on an average until 2020 is a whopping 40% which is concerning.

Birth is linked to Patriarchy, Healthcare Politics and Women’s Rights. Respect in Birth is long due to women and it affects the core of who they are.

Join me Divya Kapoor, a Certified Birth and Lactation Counselor and aspiring Traditional Birth Attendant in the quest to shine light on what we can do as parents and a community to change the narrative.

#88 - Part I - Obstetric Emergencies - Big Baby - A curse or boon ? | Big baby and Fitting through the Pelvis | Induction | Gestational Diabetes with Senior traditional Midwife KL Goode
Obstetric emergencies refer to critical situations during pregnancy, labor, or the postpartum period that require immediate medical attention to safeguard the health and well-being of the mother and/or baby. But are these really emergencies? Many women today are being told they either have a Large for Gestational Age Baby (LGA) or Small for Gestational Age Baby (SGA). IUGR is another term thrown around independently that needs fixing. It is important to note that these issues are often figured out at a scan at 36 wks or so and one diagnosis is often considered as the standalone complexity and women are then presented with options to fix it, mostly an Induction. Now, big babies have all been born through history vaginally without any issues. Similar is for small babies, why is then these are seen as problems? We sit down today with KL Goode, a Hawaain traditional midwife with over 53 years of experience and having assisted over 1400 births. Her transfer for surgery rate has been as low as 4% . She has served in India on and off and is currently based in Kolkata. She is currently training a batch of traditional midwifes aka birth keepers. She takes us through the following significant points in Part I of this discussion1. Is Big baby or Small Baby really an issue?2. If not, when is it that it becomes an issue?3. What's the truth behind the claim that big babies can't fit through the pelvis?4. What has Gestational Diabetes to do with a Large Baby?5. What is a  midwife's way of working with a  Large or Small BabyTune in to learn more. In Part II , we discuss Small for Gestational Age babies and IUGR at length and conclude our discussion. We would also like to thank our supporters, Dr Sreenath and Giridharan co founders of Nasobuddy for supporting the production of this episode and enabling a special discount for its listeners. #87 - Understand Baby sleep patterns | Reduce Fussy Periods due to Colic or Cough | Common Sleep issues answered with Dr Sreenath , Sleep Consultant, seasoned Dentist and co-founder Nasobuddy
Does your baby have fussy evenings? Are you concerned about you baby or toddler's sleep ?If you are looking at the internet for answers, know that the Internet is flooded with inappropriate information about training babies to sleep. The various methods that include crying of the baby are suggestive of treating a baby , a whole human , like a machine, incapable of thinking for itself or feel in the least. This is not gentle and it is not developmentally healthy as well.In this episode, we sit down with our expert, Dr Sreenath,  who walks us through some common questions regarding baby sleep, helping calm a fussy baby, reduce colic or working with nasal congestion , swinging , swaddling and holistically treating baby sleep.  Dr Sreenath has done an extensive study on natural and indigenous methods that make parenting easier in the earlier days. Coming from his own experience of not being able to find a suitable and 'convenient' solution for sleep issues when he became a dad, he decided to  find the answers himself and built Nasobuddy , a baby products company essentially started to solve Sleep Issues in Children and has now been helping women with other issues including breastfeeding. He also answers a few community questions ! If you answered to the insta poll and are a part of my community who sought an answer, hear this out now!About the guest:Dr Sreenath is an experienced dentist  and entrepreneur with 16 years of clinical experience. He is the visionary founder of Nasobuddy®, a brand born from a simple yet profound idea: making parenting easier and safer. Along with Mr Giridharan,  a childhood friend and MBA graduate, they started Nasobuddy®, which specializes in offering natural, evidence-based solutions to common parenting concerns, providing parents with peace of mind. He also holds the title of a sleep expert. His dedication extends to helping babies sleep better, further emphasizing his commitment to improving the well-being of families through his diverse expertise and innovative solutions. When he's not busy with all of that, Sreenath is happily married to Janani and is also a loving dad to an 11-year-old son.Support the showPrepare for Birth, explore Prenatal and Postnatal Preparation Classes, visit www.birthagni.comSupport the show: If you like what you hear, leave us a rating on Spotify app and answer the question at each episode! a review on Apple podcasts. #83 - Induction an epidemic? What does WHO say? What does Indian Gynaecology organisations say? My midwifery training and more...
Induction is offered to every mother routinely in the urban hospitals in India. The various issues are big baby, small baby, past due date , one episode of high blood pressure, all of which are not medical emergencies but perceived problems that are being brought to fit the solution to it. It is not a problem based solution scenario but more a solution based problem making. Induction as a procedure comes with its own set of risks, it is a pseudo attempt at 'supporting normal births' Oh we tried with Induction but oh it failed and we had to do a surgery, we gave you a chance.A real attempt at normal birth for majority of women should be waiting for spontaneous labor to begin. You will learn the risks of Induction, the process that should be used when it is introduced as well as the chronic case of 'Failed Inductions'Along with that I will share a little snippet from my training in Kolkata...Know someone who was offered Induction, tune in to know more....Few research papers we discuss here are: https://www.bmj.com/company/newsroom/new-trial-finds-small-benefit-of-inducing-labour-over-wait-and-see-approach-for-late-term-pregnancies/https://www.fogsi.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/XGCPR-IOL-26July.pdfhttps://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.3109/14767058.2013.864274https://globalresearchonline.net/journalcontents/v39-2/34.pdfSupport the showPrepare for Birth, explore Prenatal and Postnatal Preparation Classes, visit www.birthagni.comSupport the show: If you like what you hear, leave us a rating on Spotify app and answer the question at each episode! a review on Apple podcasts. #81 - Birth Stories - Chhavi Mittal's Birth Story | Unnecessary Hastening the Labor | Verbal Abuse | Medical Interventions and more.
Chhavi Mittal is an Indian Actress, model and producer who is also a mother of two beautiful children. The story of her two births was covered in CNA Insider's documentary , 'A million cuts - India's C-section Epidemic'  which is an attempt at blowing the gaff on India's rising C-section rates in the hospitals. In hushed voices, we all know it. We all talk about birth and women's bodies being used as a money making machine for corporate hospitals. Chhavi revealed on Instagram on her 5 page Birth Story, how she was met with aggressive and abusive treatment at the hospital with the birth of her son in 2019. With  her first born , Chhavi was induced 11 days prior her estimated due date. Her body was not ready, her baby was born with assitance.Learning from this experience, the couple took hypnobirthing classes and Chhavi circulated her birth plan with clear preferences to her doctor and pediatrician. She refused induction to begin labor. Despite clear communication, and a nicely progressing labor , medical drugs were introduced to hasten the process which turned the tables on her. Chhavi's trance was broken and her body went into a shock. What happened next? How did Chhavi react to this treatment? How did this affect her postpartum. #79 - Birth Stories - Supriya's positive Water Birth Story at Aastrika Midwifery Center
It is becoming painfully sad that despite the best preparation the obstetricians/gynaecologists are able to pursue the parents to choose Surgical births like they are selling candies. The language is usually this, 'this is just the trailer, do you think you want to take it further?' Oh even after you take so much pain, you may have to undergo surgery , then why do you think you want to take it any more. It is you choice , yes you may have natural birth after waiting but it is still a risk . It is your choice. "Sweet nudging and disempowering parents is the norm in every second hospital in Delhi, the national capital. In all this, Supriya's birth story shows how preparation and choosing a natural birth supportive center made all the difference to her birth story from spending majority of early labor at home to going to the center in time. Tune in to hear her story of a natural birth.Supriya is a new mom, an aspiring writer and a certified Hatha Yoga Coach. #77- Birth Stories - Nani's home birth stories in the village some 50 years ago!
Nani, my maternal grandmother was always in the village, up north of India. She has six children, five girls and one boy, quite classic of the traditional households. The first two , my mum and my aunt (masi) were born in a hospital outside the village where my Nanaji, maternal grandfather was a homeopath doctor. The other four children were born at home with a traditional birth attendant (Local Daima) . All were born in a sitting position. This episode gives a cultural perspective on how birth happened in the northern indian villages.Interestingly, the women of then some 50 years ago had immense knowledge of breastfeeding and also used a tool to express breast milk.Tune into know what that is!Support the showPrepare for Birth, explore Prenatal and Postnatal Preparation Classes, visit www.birthagni.comSupport the show: If you like what you hear, leave us a rating on Spotify app and answer the question at each episode! a review on Apple podcasts. This was a huge blow but they were not held or emotionally supported at the hospital.Their faith and birth education, support from midwives and birth community kept them going. All along their faith in God led them , their baby was absolutely fine at birth with no issues. This podcast was recorded when the baby was over 6 months old.It is interesting that after 3 days of labor, the placenta was not born for 9 hours, how did they cope up with this situation and what do they say about their inclination towards home birth if they have another baby.Tune in now !Support the showPrepare for Birth, explore Prenatal and Postnatal Preparation Classes, visit www.birthagni.comSupport the show: If you like what you hear, leave us a rating on Spotify app and answer the question at each episode! a review on Apple podcasts.
