Guest: Annie Hancock Director of Resident and Community Connections Denver housing Authority is a quasi municipal corporation that started in 1938, the mission is to create vibrate communities in sustainable neighborhoods.  They develop, own and operate affordable housing.  There is a considerable need for affordable housing in Denver.  They have a units ranging from one bedroom to five bedrooms.  There are some spaces that have gardens and a unit coming that is for older adults and those with mobility issues.  They focus on making the community to thrive, they offer programs they offer to the residents including work force training.    https://www.denverhousing.org/

Guest: Shanna Shelby, Denver Arts & Venues exhibition curator, creator of the Cultural Runway Series Denver Arts & Venues has been presenting runway shows in conjunction with their exhibitions at McNichols Building. This October, they have two events that coordinate with our McNichols artwork – On October 8th they have Impact Day, they are workshops that are like minding with the exhibition and the runway.  On October 14th they have the runway and this time the theme is Community.  They have selected twelve designers who submitted designs through a competitive process.  Most of the designers are local and a winner will be selected that night at the after party. Guest: Cathy Sandoval Executive Director Rocky Mountain Children’s Health Foundation supports families with sick children.  They are about finding ways to lift them up and support them during their situation.  They offer financial support, they can help with housing, gas, transportation, grocery cars or even help paying rent or mortgage.  They offer nutrition support with the mothers milk bank.  They also offer emotional support, they noticed there is a special connection between dogs and children.  One of their programs called Stink Bugs Project, children with medical conditions are matched with dogs that have been through a training program.  The other program has a dog that helps with kids that are at the hospital.  She might just lay in the bed with them or even take them on walks to just help the kids get out of bed.  https://rmchildren.org/

Guest: Haley Walz Senior Adviser St. Jude is leading the way the world understands, treats and defeats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases.  The hospital is in Memphis, TN but they share their research with everyone.  At St. Jude families never receive a bill.  St. Jude shares their research with doctors and hospital all over the word.  Coming up they have the Dream Home Giveaway.  The home is an Oakwood Home, tickets are $100.  Also coming up is the St. Jude Walk on September 23rd at Dicks Sporting Goods Park. Guest: Lila Paton Program Manager Robbie’s Hope is a teen mental health movement dedicated to cutting teen suicide rates.  It gives them the tools and resources they need to talk openly about their struggles and mental health.  Suicide is the second leading cause of death for people between the ages 18-24 and in Colorado it is the first leading cause of death.  Robbie’s hope has a national ambassador program, they have over 3,000 teens involved nationwide.  Some schools have clubs called Robbie’s club.  They have also started a podcast titled Hopeful Conversations.  On  September 24th they are hosting a Hope Run to raise awareness and to foster a change.  There will be food trucks, games, and the run/walk. https://robbies-hope.com/

Guest: Kevin Petersen Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist Kevin shared his journey of recovery with us.  You cannot make someone get sober but you can set boundaries with them.  Offer solutions with the boundaries.  Set boundaries with compassion, let them know that you will make time for them if they are sober and let them know that if they are ready to get help you will be there for them.  He wrote a book Chronic Hope Families and Addiction and he identifies what he calls Plan A.  Plan A is to let the addict know, we love you but we are not going to put up with this anymore.  Set boundaries, there needs to be accountability and there needs to be a structure.  Plan B is intervention and treatment.  Don’t give up, there is hope.    https://www.chronichope.us/

Guest: Big Bill Ficke Big Bill was an Assistant Coach with the Denver Nuggets for three seasons under Doug Moe from 1982 through 1985 and the Nuggets made the NBA Playoffs in each season.  In 1995 he opened Big Bill’s New York Pizza.  Bill waned to help to his home state of New York after 9/11, a week after the tragic events all of the proceeds from pizza sales on that day went to help those in NYC.  They raised over $35,000 that day.  A few days later one of his friends who was a firefighter reached out to him, they had lost all six guys in their fire house.  Bill set up another event and the funds went to the families of those firefighters who were lost.  This became an annual tradition for Bill.  Bill’s wife passed away in 2009 from lymphoma.  Bill and his son Dan started the JoAnn B. Ficke Cancer Foundation. The Foundation now distributes all funds raised through the “9/11 Day of Giving."  They distribute the money to six cancer foundations around Colorado.  On Monday 9/11 is their big day of giving.  Every penny raised that day will go to JoAnn B. Guest: Mindy Wastrous President and CEO Tennyson Center for Children serves kids and families who have been impacted by neglect, abuse and other traumatic experiences.  They started as an orphanage over 120 years ago.  They have a day treatment school that helps with children who need a little bit more then what they would get in their district school.  Each child has a clinician, in class teachers, and youth treatment counselors that help them heal. They also in home services to work with the family an the child.  This helps to keep the child in their home during treatment.  The residential program is for kids with intellectual disabilities and mental health and behavioral challenges.  Colorado is 42nd in the nation for proving mental health services to the youth.  Coming up on September 15th is the Mile High Q and Brew at Mile High Station.  Q & Brew is a night with BBQ, drinks, a live auction, spirit pull, and a concert featuring Conner Smith! https://www.tennysoncenter.org

Guest: Dr. Carpenter The prostate gland is in the urinary track in men.  Prostate cancer is very similar to the number of people being diagnosed as breast cancer it is just not talked about as much.  Men should start getting checked at between 50-55, if there is a family history they should be getting checked sooner.  The Blue Shoe Run is is a family friendly 5k walk/run coming up on September 9th through the Urology Center of Colorado.  The money raised goes to American Cancer society for research for prostate cancer.  There is about 300,000 diagnosed a year with prostate cancer and about 35,000 will pass away.  https://raceroster.com/events/2023/74750/the-blue-shoe-run-for-prostate-cancer

Guest: Lisa Switzer President There are 14 chapters of Irish Networks around the country.  The Colorado chapter was incorporated 13 years ago.  The mission is to bring together Irish groups, Irish American Group and is a way to celebrate their Irish heritage.  The Leadville cemetery has an Evergreen section and there are many sunken and unmarked graves in the free catholic section.  In the mid 1800’s many immigrants moved the their area to help mine the cooper mines.  There are over 1,300 Irish and other immigrants buried in unmarked graves.  Most of the names on the list the The Irish Network Colorado has are of women and children.  The Irish Network Colorado reads 10 names of people’s names on their list at any event they have.  On September 16th, 2023 the Irish Network Colorado will have an event that will be unveiling of the artfully landscaped and curated Leadville Irish Miners’ Memorial in the Catholic-free (pauper) section of Evergreen Cemetery. https://www.irishnetworkco.com

Guest: Katie Zarlengo Executive Director     Zarlengo Foundation supports schools and programs for learning disabled students, such as ADHA, Dyslexia, etc..  The foundation started as small family foundation just about 21 years ago and in the last 10 years ago they became a pubic charity.  They help kids from early childhood through college. They help schools and districts with things such as camps, audio books, field trips, teacher training, classroom resources, parent events and even scholarships.  They also have the Zarlengo Foundation Learning Evaluation Center that test to help decide if your child had dyslexia, ADHD and anxiety, autism, speech issues and others, then they create a learning profile so you have a better idea to help your child and can also give to their schools.  In November they have a comedy event to help raise money.  This year they are brining back Terry Fator and his Christmas show that will be held November 18th at the Bellco Theater.     https://www.zarlengofoundation.org/

Guest: Liz Heisel Town Clerk Log Lane Village is just a mile outside of Fort Morgan.  There are still log cabin that are original to the town and the other half are modular or prefabricated homes.  They town does community events such as an Easter Egg Hunt, a Town Bar-B-Q, Trunk or Treats, kids Christmas party and also coming up is the Car Show.  August 26th and 27th is the Car Show.  The event is free and there will be six bands, live trivia, cash prizes, food and craft vendors, and so much more.  https://www.townofllv.com/

Guest: Nicole Vanderpool SAA-Denver Event Co-Director Swim Across America is a national non-profit that runs swimming-related events throughout the country to support cancer research at the most highly recognized hospitals and institutions.  Over the years they have raised over $100MM for cancer research that stays locally.  Swim Across America’s Denver has raised over $1 MM since 2018 and their beneficiary is Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children's Hospital Colorado.  Their big event this year is going to be on August 20th at Chatfield Reservoir.  You register to swim anywhere from half a mile to two miles.  If you are over 18 the fundraising minimum is $500 and $250 if you are under 18.  https://www.swimacrossamerica.org/site/TR/OpenWater/Denver?pg=entry&fr_id=6591

Guest: Kelly Wulf Executive Director Comeback Yoga is a nonprofit that provides free, trauma-informed, science-based yoga to the military community.  This yoga is different, they help you get comfortable in your body again and connect breathing to movement.  They a getting you to feel safe and be in the present.  The instructors have to go through more than the 200 hours training, they also have to do an orientation about brain science, post traumatic stress, military sexual trauma, military cultural competency.  30% of the instructors are veterans.  In 2022 they served over 12,000 students.  The classes are all free of charge and the classes are at military centric locations.  On August 13th they are having a benefit concert with The Missing.  Tickets are just $20.  They will have a hot dog stand, a bar and a raffle all to help raise funds for Comeback Yoga.      https://www.comebackyoga.org
