Recovering from yo yo dieting and negative body image with Lindsay Heller
Today is a special milestone on The Diet Diaries because for the first time ever, I’m talking with a client.Lindsay and I have been working together since August 2022 and like all of us that are here, Lindsay was a life long yo yo dieter, relying on her size and shape as a main source of happiness in her life, constantly battling negative body image.Every diet was always about getting smaller, believing that a thinner body was better. Here’s what Lindsay shares with us:Haw she has started to make progress with negative body image after constantly trying to lose weight for 20 yearsLindsay’s relationship with exercise and how that intertwined with her food choicesHer extreme mindset around food and how and why Lindsay would swing from one to the otherHow Lindsay used urgency and deadlines to lose weight and what the ultimate outcome wasThe way Weight Watchers distorted Lindsay’s eatingHow Lindsay is trying to break the generational patterns around food, weight and body image with her daughterHow Lindsay’s yo yo dieting mindset and history impacted the medical guidance to go gluten and dairy free AND do intermittent fasting as part of the IVF processWhy food is about joy, love and agency over your body, not just fuel and nutritionWhy these extreme food restrictions inspired Lindsay to reach out for supportThe big mental shifts around food Lindsay made as a result of our work togetherThe number one thing we prioritized to help Lindsay make her diet sustainableHow Lindsay reconciled the weight loss she experienced from the gluten free/dairy free diet with her history of negative body image and disordered eatingThe ways in which coaching positively changed Lindsay’s life after decades of struggling with dieting and negative body imageLindsay wrote this moving op ed detailing her pregnancy losses, IVF experience and her support for abortion as healthcare for women.Connect with JordanaFind me on InstagramSign up for my Monday newsletter with lots of nutrition, body image and mindset tipsSchedule a free discovery call to talk more about working together
How do I stop thinking "why do I hate my body?"

How do I stop thinking "why do I hate my body?"
Today’s episode is a really important one because its about how you learn to respond to and deal with your negative thoughts around food and your body. You know the thoughts telling you things like:Your stomach is fat and disgustingThat cellulite looks gross in those leggingsYou’re out of control around these cookiesYou can do every diet in the world and they will NEVER change the way you think about food and your body. Which is why a diet doesn’t fix what you want it to fix. Having skills to learn how to respond to your negative thoughts is where true, lasting change happens. And skills don’t include ignoring them, wishing they weren’t there or being verbally abusive to ourselves for thinking them. There are lots of wonderful influencers and creators out there sharing content to remind you that its ok to have fat on your stomach, to have cellulite on your thighs, to eat carbs after 7pm. But it isn’t enough just to follow those people and see that—you need actual skills to learn how to respond to the negative thoughts that your brain is producing seemingly every moment of every day.So I am talking through 4 specific, usable skills you can start practicing to help deal with the thoughts so you can start making progress towards feeling at ease around food and in your body. (Note: The poem I mentioned is The Guest House by Rumi, not Hafiz. Brain fart.)We’ll be working on these skills at the Spring Weekend Retreat. How fat loss happens without a diet
Today is episode 118 of The Diet Diaries and I’m talking about how fat loss happens without dieting.I’ve talked about the skills that are part of this many times before, but today I’m getting more specific around exactly how those skills impact what, why and how you’re eating and how that connects to fat loss. We’ve always been told that there is one way to lose weight. A diet. But as is often the case, there is always more than one way to get to a goal. And that’s what this is all about. Here’s what I’m covering in episode 118:—The basic science behind fat loss—How skills are different than rules—The time frame you need be thinking about when it comes to long term fat loss—Two detailed examples of how fat loss happens as a result of practicing skills—The impact of our environment and the food available to us on fat loss—How bigger meals and fewer snacks can naturally reduce your overall intake —How slowing down when you eat can reduce your overall intakeThe Spring Weekend Retreat is May 19-21 in Hunter, NY.  Two nights and 3 days all inclusive.  A peaceful weekend to connect and reflect around eating, body image and self care so you can return home grounded and clear on what truly matters to you. Are carbs and sugar making you gain weight?

Are carbs and sugar making you gain weight?
Today is episode 115 of The Diet Diaries and I’m talking all about how we like to blame one single food for the reason we gain weight or can’t lose weight when the truth is never about any one food. It’s about the dosage. I’m sharing how I gained weight on Whole 30 and why that happened—because when it comes to losing and gaining fat, calories are calories. Whether you get them from avocados or cake. Then I’m diving into why all calories aren’t created equal when it comes to nutrition, satisfaction and enjoyment and how we start to move away from the all or nothing thinking that keeps us trapped in the diet cycle. Here’s some of the specifics I’m discussing today:Why no single food, not even carbs or sugar, are what make you gain OR lose weightWhat calorie density means, what it looks like and why it mattersWhat nutrient density means, what it looks like and why it mattersWhy certain foods are easier to over eat and how we manage thatWe’ll be learning all of the skills to move away from the all or nothing approach to food in Eat with Ease, my 6 week nutrition and body image group coaching program. The waitlist is open now which gets you 20% off the regular rate when registration opens Feb 22. Here's the episode I did all about calories.Connect with JordanaFind me on InstagramSign up for my Monday newsletter with lots of nutrition, body image and mindset tipsSchedule a free discovery call to talk more about working together

Does changing your appearance change your body image?

Does changing your appearance change your body image?
Today is the third episode in the unofficial body image series and in episode 112 I’m talking about how we use aesthetic changes to feel good about ourselves. Whether its getting dressed, doing your hair, wearing make up, dieting to change what your body looks like, getting injections, having plastic surgery….all of these external changes live on a spectrum and I want to help give you a framework for how to use them in a way that will actually get you the result you’re after. Here’s what I’m talking about today:Why not all external changes are the same (I.e. putting on make up is not the same as dieting to lose weight)How to figure out which changes are the right ones for you and will get you the outcome you wantHow my own experience with plastic surgery affected my body imageWhy you can’t rely on how and what you look like to provide your self worthI have 1:1 coaching spots available and if you’re struggling with feeling uncomfortable in your own body and are realizing that another diet isn’t going to change it, I’m your girl. How to actually feel happy with your body

How to actually feel happy with your body
Today’s episode is inspired by the Jonah Hill's documentary Stutz which I watched on Netflix over the holiday. I’m talking about why what we see on the outside never captures a person’s lived experience on the inside. So when we look at before and after photos or see someone famous lose a bunch of weight and automatically assume they are happy and their life is better, there is SO much we’re missing. Happiness doesn’t come from achieving an external goal around money or a clothing size or a job or a house. It comes from the actions you’ve taken that are in line with your values and how you want to show up in the world. And as we come into 2023 and you’re thinking about what you want for yourself this year, this conversation is essential. In this episode you’ll hear:Why external changes don’t guarantee happinessHow to improve body image without losing weight Why seeing celebrities lose weight feels so triggering How to stay connected to YOUR work when it seems like a quick fix would be the easy answer I’m looking to begin working with 4-5 new 1:1 clients this month. If you’re ready to make a permanent change so you can stop feeling obsessed with food, start feeling at ease in your body and lose fat, I’d love to help. Why strength training is the most important thing you need to be doing with Gina Wright

Why strength training is the most important thing you need to be doing with Gina Wright
Today I’m talking with my very close friend, strength coach and yoga teacher Gina Wright. This episode is kind of us just having a conversation with each other and then sharing it with all of you to listen, so expect a lot of laughing and fun tangents.Within that we have an amazing conversation around why strength training for women is non negotiable, how to get started if you feel intimidated and overwhelmed and what lifting heavy actually means (its not what you think).Gina is also an expert in fitness for women going through the various stages of menopause and she shares some really valuable tips to help you feel better in your body while going through this emotionally and physically taxing time. One of the most important topics we talk through is how individualized our needs are when it comes to exercise and strength training because of your history, lifestyle and preferences. Yes, there are guidelines, but within that there is the possibility for SO many options to make it work for you in the best way possible. And of course you can’t talk strength training without talking protein. We share some really simple guidelines to give you a starting point to get more protein into your diet. How to get through the holidays feeling calm, healthy and well fed

How to get through the holidays feeling calm, healthy and well fed
Today is Monday November 14 which means we are in full on holiday season mode.So I wanted to talk through some very specific skills you can draw from over the next 6-8 weeks so you can feel like yourself in January and not diving into another juice cleanse. Real talk, this time of year may not be the best time to start something totally brand new in terms of change around food and exercise. But that doesn’t mean we do nothing nor does it mean that we say screw it, eat anything and everything and tell ourselves we’ll deal with it in January.  The skills I’m sharing are small and totally doable without requiring a lot of energy or effort. And the best part is you only need to choose ONE to make a difference. I share a lot about the scarcity we feel around holiday foods, how to deal with leftovers and what to do when you overeat. Ultimately this is about the fact that the small stuff matters. The tiny stuff matters. Because something, no matter how small it is, always adds up to something bigger. But nothing adds up to nothing. I created a free resource for you that goes right along with this episode called Nourishing Notes. 30 days of free super short and simple emails so you can feel supported and connected during the overwhelm of the holiday season. Connect with JordanaFind me on InstagramSign up for my Monday newsletter with lots of nutrition, body image and mindset tipsSchedule a free discovery call to talk more about working together
Why are we so afraid to talk about calories?

Why are we so afraid to talk about calories?
Today’s episode may feel a little controversial and unexpected because I’m talking about calories. And to be honest, I’ve been afraid to talk about this. Because we automatically label anything to do with calories as “bad” or as promoting diet culture. But it’s just not that simple. Because calories are about science. Our bodies were designed to require calories to survive. The issue is the meaning and emotion we’ve assigned to them that becomes the problem. So today I’m talking about what calories are, why and when they matter, why and when they don’t matter and why we are so obsessed with them. Because ultimately this about helping you rediscover your autonomy. Giving you the knowledge you need to make informed, thoughtful, intentional choices around your body. So today’s episode gives some simple education around what calories are as well as some skills around how to shift the intense emotions we have around them. If thinking or talking about calories has been triggering for you in the past, I totally get it. You may want to skip this episode….and you may also want to listen so you can begin learning how to shift the power calories have over you. Here’s what I’m diving into today:Understanding exactly what a calorie is and why it mattersThe difference between the calories in protein, carbs and fatWhy some people gain, lose or maintain weight more easilyHow to start stripping out the intense emotions we feel around certain foods based on how many calories they haveHow to approach a caloric deficit to lose fat without a restrictive mindsetWhy having basic knowledge around calories can actually be a relief instead of creating stressAlso join us for Nourishing Notes. 30 days of free short and simple morning emails to help you feel healthy, calm and well fed throughout the chaos of the holiday season. Connect with JordanaFind me on InstagramSign up for my Monday newsletter with lots of nutrition, body image and mindset tipsSchedule a free discovery call to talk more about working together
