Kill By Kill: Talking Horror Characters One Death At A Time

We Write Good

In each episode, Patrick Hamilton and Gena Radcliffe unpack all the gory details of horror cinema's least discussed topic: the characters. From Friday the 13th to Nightmare on Elm Street and beyond, our mission is to detail each hack, slash, and decapitation in the hopes that a victim's untimely end is just the beginning of the jokes we can make about them. read less

The Terminator (40th Anniversary)
In the Year of Darkness, 2024 - one podcast will be sent back to the past to discuss “ice cream scooping” waitresses to save humanity!! That’s right, pluck out those eyeballs and put in your earbuds as we open up shop on the James Cameron classic, THE TERMINATOR, for its 40th anniversary!! It’s a movie that’s probably been talked about by more people than any other film we’ve discussed on the show. Yet, so many mysteries remain, such as the source of Tech Noir’s citywide success and why Cyberdyne thought a robot with Arnold Schwarzenegger’s body type would fit in amongst starving human scavengers in the post-apocalypse? And those are hardly the only questions we’re asking here: what is the deal with Cameron’s obsession with extraneous limbs during sex scenes? At what point does the T-800 begin to stink so badly? Is this film the best representation of Bob’s Big Boy on film? All this, plus we wonder if “Dagwooding it” post-sex is something we can stomach, and we dine out on a jam-packed edition of Choose Your Deathventure!! The future may be unwritten, but don’t let this episode go undownloaded!!  Part of the BLEAV Network. Get even more episodes exclusively on Patreon!  Artwork by Josh Hollis: joshhollis.com Kill By Kill theme by Revenge Body. Disturbing Behavior (w/ Harmony Colangelo)
Distracted at school? Lashing out at home? The solution to your teen’s problems is just a ferry ride away in Cradle Bay, where one unregulated doctor and a gang of Blue Ribbons are standing by to shove a white-hot microchip into your eyeball!! That’s right, we’re talking X-Files grunge, Tarantino monologues, and 1998’s DISTURBING BEHAVIOR with writer and “This Ends At Prom” podcast co-host Harmony Colangelo!! Along the way, we delve into the tug-of-war between what the film wants to say and what the movie actually says about teen angst and rebellion, the competing sci-fi teen scream flicks of 1998, discuss why parents just don’t understand, and why no one considered an intolerance to horny thoughts to a be a behavior-modification dealbreaker during R&D!! Friday the 13th Theatrical Poster Draft (w/ Clay Keller & Graham Skipper)
You were warned. You are doomed. You are in for a Friday the 13th treat!! That’s right, we’re celebrating the luckiest of unlucky days with something we’ve never tried before: a theatrical poster draft of the entire Friday the 13th franchise with two overly qualified guests - from the Screen Drafts podcast, it’s Returning Champion Clay Keller; and in his KBK debut, actor/director/horror legend Graham Skipper!! Join us as we debate and rank from worst to first the artwork that defined the franchise’s 12 entries and discuss such heated topics as poop worms, poor taglines, Xenomorph whispering, knife reflection nudes, wooden title treatments, and reminding everyone which movie has a sequence filmed in Corey Feldman’s backyard!! Which poster will make it to the top and what will be left? You’ll have to listen to know for yourself!! Listen to Screen Drafts here!! LONGLEGS (2024)
Congratulations! You won a prize from the church, and it’s a new episode of Kill By Kill talking about the biggest horror hit of the year so far... LONGLEGS!! That’s right, we’re getting possessed by this hypnotic supernatural banger of a serial killer thriller, and we can’t shut up about it!! We’re digging into all the details, including the movie’s fantastic marketing push, the Devil’s delivery service, worship at the alter of Osgood Perkins, the truth about “Charlie Brown’s hos,” dig into the performance of one Nicolas Cage, consider random Dark Tower talk, and we celebrate the movie’s fantastic microfiche sequence!! All this, plus pick out some favorite horror references within the film, talk about the world’s worst basement-based roommate, and remotely connect to an all-new edition of Choose Your Own Deathventure!! Download it now, and it can be nice. But also you can download it once, twice… anytime that you like!!! The First Omen (2024)
Thank Satan It’s Friday!! That’s right, we’re worshiping at the altar of THE FIRST OMEN!! Say what? “You two liked a prequel?” Yes, a listener who I just invented, WE DID!! Folks, strap in your headgear for an initiation to end all initiations (Sorry, 1984’s The Initiation) as we talk 1971 Rome, listen to the Devil’s Disco, dissect the Church’s “big plan,” consider demonic honeymoon suites, engage in jackal pillow talk, and that’s all before we join the secret cabal of director Arkasha Stevenson and star Nell Tiger Free!! All this, plus we dig into the layered political threads of the film, the horrors of pregnancy, how this movie is at its best when it’s not trying to be an OMEN prequel and a dazzling edition of Choose Your Own Deathventure!! Oh, and we make a commitment to seeing Death Pool - The Pool That Eats. So this is a must-listen, people!! Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007)

Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007)
You asked for it. You demanded it. We… sadly listened to you. That’s right - by overwhelming demand, we’re covering a true clash of the Titans: terrible lighting and non-existent characters! Wait. That’s here too, but the movie we’re talking about is ALIENS VS. PREDATOR: REQUIEM!! This movie has it all: Predator wedding rehearsals, Doctor Face-Hands, a real-life murderer, communal hootch in a sewer, xenomorph stage direction, people who state that their profession is acting, and a girl!! What girl? Who can say? You get all this, plus we dip into Predator bureaucracy, remember our favorite screams, force in more Prometheus discussion then you would think, and dip ourselves into a very acid-heavy edition of Choose Your Own Deathventure!! No matter who wins, we lose interest. Good ep, tho. Watch Alien vs. Predator Requiem on Hulu right now!! In A Violent Nature (2024)
Everybody enjoys a good walk. But do you know what makes a good walk great? Grizzly murders executed by an undead, backwoods mutant!! That’s right, we’re talking about a new “dirty peanut” - Johnny from 2024’s innovative IN A VIOLENT NATURE!! Following the example of the film, we dig into each character in the order in which they die, explore the film’s audacious storytelling gambit, challenge our concept of a #GetBunked death, debate whether you should pick up random woodland lockets, and dig up as many Friday the 13th easter eggs as we can find in the beautiful Canadian wilderness!! All this, plus best corpse use practices, we put some respect on Tommy Jarvis’ name, propose that filmmakers run dialogue past Chappell Roan, and put a unique POV behind a game of Choose Your Own Deathventure!! It's a hack-tacular spectacular this week on Kill By Kill!!   Bring home A Quiet Place: Day One on Digital now! Lupita Nyong'o and Joseph Quinn star in the film, which critics say is "packed with nail-biting tension and thrills." It includes over 50 minutes of behind-the-scenes footage and deleted scenes! Written and Directed by Michael Sarnoski, it is available at participating retailers. Buy A Quiet Place: Day One on Digital today. Rated PG-13. The Wraith (w/ William Bibbiani)

The Wraith (w/ William Bibbiani)
It’s the movie that puts revenge into a different gear! That’s right, it’s Mad Max meets The Crow but not nearly as good as either - we’re talking 1986’s THE WRAITH with help from The Wrap critic, Critically Acclaimed network host, and Returning Champion to the show, William Bibbiani!! We don’t have time to let Jesus take the wheel, as we’re off and running to discuss road pirates, Uwe Boll’s casting strategies, upgraded revenge avatars, Kamen Rider inspirations, and what educational films about puberty contain information about Wraiths!! All this, plus we explore range exchange programs, compare Clint Howard to Natalie Wood, and crash head on into an extremely explosive edition of Choose Your Own Deathventure!! Not for nothing, but we also have a robust Jaws The Revenge debate for… reasons. Feel the need for undead speed with us today!! Read Infinity Mathing at the Shore & Other Disruptions by M. Fatal Games (1984)

Fatal Games (1984)
Light the torch, hit the track… Olympics fever has arrived at Kill By Kill!! And what better way to celebrate the gold standard in human achievement happening in Paris than to review one of the dumbest and repetitive slashers we’ve ever encountered from the good old USA - 1984’s FATAL GAMES!! We’re training to reach the top by discussing how this movie fails at almost every turn: bland characters, dingy settings, partially clothed showers, sinks full of dirty dishes, completely unclothed chase sequences, Oscar-winning performers, performance-enhancing drugs that decrease everyone’s onscreen performance, and that’s before we get to the prerequisite lockers full of corpses!! All this, plus a surprising connection to Body Double, the return of The Breather, and for the first, and hopefully only time, we have a primarily javelin-based edition of Choose Your Own Deathventure!! This episode won't make the podium, but this episode might!  Watch Fatal Games on Shudder right now!!   Part of the BLEAV Network. Get even more episodes exclusively on Patreon!  Artwork by Josh Hollis: joshhollis.com Kill By Kill theme by Revenge Body. Fright Night (w/ Kashana Cauley)

Fright Night (w/ Kashana Cauley)
Sure, the suburbs suck - but they’ve never sucked quite like they do in the 1985 vampire next door classic, FRIGHT NIGHT!! Here to help us peep and tell all about it is the incredibly funny author, Kashana Cauley!! Along the way, we talk about the sustainability of suburban vampire life, engage in local Madison, Wisconsin reference jokes, debate the concept of clouds with teeth, consider exactly what Amy is looking for - and not getting - from Charlie, explore the film’s variations on Renfield and Harker, and celebrating both Roddy McDowell the actor, the film preservationist, and his greatest role: Jason Swankle from the TV miniseries Hollywood Wives! All this, plus we honestly question Ali from Friday the 13th 3D’s monster attacking methods, bite into clavicles, and play a transformative edition of Choose Your Own Deathventure!! Grab a stake and hang out with us for a while, won’t you?  Read Kashana's awesome novel, The Survivalists!! Popcorn (w/ Zena)

Popcorn (w/ Zena)
It was the kernel of a great idea… take a meta approach to the slasher genre and the theatrical experience. Five years before SCREAM savaged the slasher, 1991’s POPCORN burst onto the scene - but didn’t quite make the same impact. On this episode, we go deep into this 90s horror artifact along with Bloody Disgusting Podcast co-host and Returning Champion, the lovely Zena!! Along the way, we fill up tanks full of faces, wonder which audience the film was aimed at, enroll in the University of California at Oceanview, Jamaica U.S.A., evoke the specter of The Curse 2, discuss Gen X’s Amish fashion era, go “full Moochie” mode, talk pretty dumb guys, re-litigate the ghost strategy of Death Spa, and consider why Jill Schoelen has so often been paired with burned villains!! All this, plus we’ve got a Mandatory Tina, a Motivation Dungeon, an unplugged reggae band, and a freshly popped edition of Choose Your Own Deathventure!! Your ticket to the show is waiting at the box office, people!! We're also throwing the spotlight onto the brand new action-packed revenge thriller HARD HOME, starring Simone Kessell! A grieving mother's high-tech home becomes a trap for her daughter's killer as they each play a deadly game of cat-and-mouse. Buy HARD HOME on digital now. Rated R. From Republic Pictures. Late Night With The Devil (2024)
Tune In, Turn On, Burn In (ratings) Hell!! That’s right, we’re flipping the channel and tackling a new (-ish) flick this week as we slot LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL this week on Kill By Kill!! We start with a non-spoiler look at the movie for those who have yet to catch up before digging into all the most devilish of details, such as our aging roster of Weird Little Guys, endless production cards, terrible AI art, fantastic casting and set design, the value of bent spoon collecting, and comparing bad demonic deals - especially when held up to Lance Henriksen’s Atlanta basketball team wager in THE VISITOR!! You know, the Gold Standard of devil contracts!! All this, plus the hell of cleaning black bile, we compare and contrast this film with other direct broadcast horror efforts and the perfect “10 to 1” selection of Choose Your Own Deathventure!! Will Gena’s prediction of “serious pushback” to our options come true? Who gives a hoot?
