The True Levers You Need to Pull for Positive Change with Ruth Taylor - 291

The True Levers You Need to Pull for Positive Change with Ruth Taylor - 291
We are living in tumultuous times, we are facing some of the biggest challenges ever as a species, and as individual countries, organisations and people.  And despite the huge incentives to come together to work through these problems, we are in a lot of ways more divided than ever before.  Many speakers today are talking on some of these big topics and wicked problems, looking to shift audience perspectives and inspire them to get into action and make positive change happen. To achieve this, conventional wisdom has suggested that we need to incentivise people to make a change by tapping into material desires because that is what society is geared to admire and aspire to.   But what if that isn’t true, what if there are more powerful levers to pull to effect change? My guest, Ruth Taylor, is going to share another perspective on drivers for change that will help you share your message with more power and impact. Ruth has worked in the field of social and environmental change for close to 15 years. She is driven by the question of how more people can be encouraged to think, feel and act differently when it comes to the multiple and interconnected challenges we are experiencing globally.  Currently, Ruth splits her time between working for the Common Cause Foundation, a small not-for-project working to rebalance the values we see championed in our cultures, and as a freelance narrative strategist, supporting a range of different organisations from NGOs to cultural institutions to consider how their work could help shift harmful narratives towards more regenerative and just alternatives. Ruth also loves to write and her work can be found on Medium. I know you are going to get a lot of food for thought here, so listen up!   What you’ll discover: Ruth’s journey into social change. What ‘narrative change’ is all about. How the common cause foundation came into being. The distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic valuesWhy leveraging intrinsic values is more powerful than extrinsic values. How you should use intrinsic value led messaging to grab attention in the corporate world. What ‘woke’ capitalism is and whether it’s a good thing. Tips for speakers to make their message more transformational. The values 101 training course and what you can do next.   All things Ruth: https://medium.com/common-cause/this-barbie-wants-narrative-change-cd5693535889  https://ruthtaylordotorg.files.wordpress.com/2022/01/transforming-narrative-waters.pdf  https://www.tickettailor.com/events/commoncausefoundation https://commoncausefoundation.org    Books & Resources*: Parable of the Sower by Octavia E. The Truth Prescription - Hacking Your Health with Dr Brooke Bussard MD - 289
All of us want to be healthy, happy and live a long and active life, but getting clarity on how to achieve that is a struggle. The information we get is often tainted by corporate interests pushing us in the direction of their products or pills, and all of this can leave you feeling like you’re in a maze full of dead ends, getting spun around with no way to find the right path to wellness. In the meantime, many of us are getting diagnosed with obesity and chronic diseases that can feel like a prison sentence.  When I heard Dr Brooke Bussard speak, it felt like there was light at the end of the tunnel. I had so many ‘aha’ moments that I felt sure my head would explode!  Brooke qualified as an MD in internal medicine, so that she could help to make people better. However, despite all her medical knowledge, she couldn’t find out what was causing her own chronic pain.  One day she had her own light-bulb moment, and it changed the trajectory of her life and the tools that she used to make people well.  She is a sought-after speaker, author, and member of The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and the American College of Lifestyle Medicine.  I am so thrilled to have her on the show, so that she can share more about how she engages her audiences and clients, and transforms them from confused consumers to empowered eaters.  Enjoy! What you’ll discover: The trigger for Brooke changing the way she approached healing people. Why most of the world is lactose intolerant. It’s not your will power, it's what’s in the cheese. The propaganda that is pushing us into our graves. Why employers should care more about nutrition. How Brooke has reversed chronic diseases. Why is the medical profession is sticking plasters on broken legs. The things that you should know about the food we are encouraged to eat today. The biggest obstacles to people taking back control of their health and waistline. Why Brooke wrote her book ‘Chew on this’Where speaking fits in the picture for sharing this message.   All things Brooke: https://plantsoveranimals.com/  https://plantsoveranimals.com/quick-cooks  Chew on This on Amazon: https://a.co/d/53CqYgt  If you are active on social media, please provide your links below:: www.linkedin.com/in/brooke-bussard-md  IG: @educated_eating IG: @plantsoveranmls   Books & Resources*: Walking With Peety by Eric O’Grey   Resources: Grab Your From Blank Page to Stage Guide and Nail the Topic for a Client Winning Talk Want to get better at finding and sharing your stories then check out our FREE Five Day Snackable Story Challenge   Thanks for listening!   To share your thoughts:                                                   Share this show on X, Facebook or LinkedIn. Making National Security Meaningful with David Van Bennekum - 286

Making National Security Meaningful with David Van Bennekum - 286
When I met David Van Bennekum on Linked In and he told me he’d written a self-help book on National Security, I thought ‘That’s a bit unusual, followed by blimey he’s got some guts … that’s a challenging topic’.  My curiosity was well and truly piqued though, so I had a look at his LinkedIn profile and saw that he was a former United States Marine Corps Infantry and Logistics Officer. He was a veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan and he’d retired from active service as a Lieutenant Colonel.  Then I saw that besides that, he had a law degree and also a Masters in National Security Law from Georgetown University. He obviously had the knowledge, but as I messaged him back to find out more, I’m not going to lie … based on previous conversations with some ‘experts’, I was fully expecting him to bore the pants off me! But … the opposite happened. When he started sharing about it, he didn’t waffle on about facts and stats, no … he made me laugh and even better, gave me a light bulb moment about something truly important.  And that’s when I knew I had to get him on the show, because being able to make something complex, technical and difficult, engaging and relatable to an audience, is a key skill for writers and speakers.  If you want to get a different perspective on how to make your subject more entertaining, then sit back and listen ‘cause you’ll love this show.    What you’ll discover: Why David decided to write the first self-help book on National SecurityHow he decided on the big idea of the bookWhy people are sceptical about it and how he addresses that. Why the six degrees of Kevin Bacon game is relevant to National SecurityDavid’s definition of National Security and why he thinks it applies universally. What he means by ‘true community’How he approached making the topic entertaining and relatable, and why this was so critical. Some examples of his approach in action. Where speaking fits into the picture.   All things David: https://store.bookbaby.com/book/searching-for-true-community  https://www.linkedin.com/in/dvanbennekum/  X:  @dvanbennekum   Books & Resources*: Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens   Resources: The Hookology Workshop - Making Sure Your Talk is Captivating From the Start Grab Your From Blank Page to Stage Guide and Nail the Topic for a Client Winning Talk Get a Powerful Talk Structure - Join the Masterclass Want to get better at finding and sharing your stories then check out our FREE Five Day Snackable Story Challenge Practice your speaking & test your content in a safe space in The Speaking Club ‘Live’ Membership Want to create a signature talk that sells, then check out our Nail Your Signature Talk in 60 Days programme.  Want to find out about working with me 121 then book a call here. https://www.saraharcher.co.uk   Thanks for listening!   To share your thoughts:                                                   Share this show on Twitter, Facebook or LinkedIn. License to Thrill… Your Audience - 285

License to Thrill… Your Audience - 285
The other day I had a talk planning call with a potential client, and he said: “I just want to get consistent results. Sometimes I start my talk and I can feel the energy shift, and I know I’ve engaged them. But other times, I just can’t get their attention, and I want to understand how to do this consistently every time I speak.” The truth is that grabbing your audience’s attention in the right way, (or ‘hooking’’ them in, as I call it), is one of the biggest stumbling blocks for a successful talk. The first 180 seconds of your talk is perhaps the most crucial, and that’s because in those two to three minutes you are communicating a lot to your audience without even realising it.  In this show, I’m going to show you how to make the most of that time, and to avoid the bear traps I so often see speakers falling into at the start of their talk.  Enjoy! What you’ll learn: The messages you are communicating to your audience before you even start speaking. The big mistakes a lot of speakers make with the start of their talk. Why you should go for quantity over quality when you are looking for great ideas. The questions you should ask yourself before you ‘settle’ for a talk title, open and close. Why you should be provocative and what to do after. If you want to be heard stay out of the ‘herd’The way to make your talk unique. Making Your Brand Uniquely You with Becky Benfield-Humberstone - 283
Not too long ago I heard one of the gurus in my space say that one of the big factors in his success is that when everyone else ‘zigs’, he ‘zags’. You can see ‘zigging’ going on all around you, suddenly everyone wants to be a neurodiversity expert, or an AI expert, because that’s what’s hot, because they are chasing the trend.  But what if you don’t do that? What if you go your own way, and stay true to who you are and who you want to help?  That is the path that Becky Benfield-Humberstone has chosen right from the get go. A born entrepreneur, Becky left school at 16 to start her own super niched business, Utterly Horses, which became the largest model horse stockist (yes, it’s a thing) in Europe, with a product range of over 2,500 items that retailed to a customer base of over 50,000 people and corporate clients. After successfully exiting that business in 2018, Becky wanted a new challenge.  That’s when she created Brand Artisan, and in that business she has been helping business owners bring their visions to life, stand out, and exponentially grow their businesses. She is joining me here to talk about all things branding, storytelling and marketing, and I know you are going to pick up some golden nuggets from her.    What you’ll discover: How Becky started an international business at 16.The problem Becky solves today. The difference between brand strategy and marketing strategy. Why keynote speakers need a brand. The big branding you might be making in business. Where stories fit into the work Becky does. Why Becky bucks the trend and only works with one client at a time. Where speaking fits in.Why Becky created the Founders project and how you can get involved.    All things Becky: www.thebrandartisan.co.uk www.postcardsfromafounder.com @beckybenfieldhumberstone @postcardsfromafounder   Books & Resources*: The One Minute Millionaire by Mark Victor Hansen and Robert G. Karmic Selling - How to Win Big and Feel Good with Stan Gwizdak - 281

Karmic Selling - How to Win Big and Feel Good with Stan Gwizdak - 281
Most of us have experienced sales ‘tactics’, and likely we’ve either recoiled against them and scarpered (physically or digitally), or have gone ahead with our needed purchase, even though a little bit of shine has worn off the relationship with the person that used them on us. Our experiences have made us sceptical of anyone with something to sell, and allergic to feeling ‘salesy’ ourselves.  But whether we like it or not, we’re all in the business of selling something to someone, whether that’s ourselves as a speaker, our book to a reader, or our products and services to clients and customers. So … I guess that means you have to ‘suck it up’ and jump on the soft and hard sell bandwagon if you want to succeed. Well no … you don’t.  That’s because there is another way that will likely yield you more reward in sales and personal satisfaction than anything you’ve come across before. And that new approach is called Karmic Selling created by my guest Stan Gwizdak. Stan Gwizdak is CEO of The Kormac Group, a results-driven management consulting firm that embodies his clean heart and commitment to serving others. As a chief executive and Six Sigma Master Black Belt, Stan has spent more than 30 years leading business transformations at General Electric, BAE Systems, Honeywell, Textron, Aurora Capital, Goodyear Tire and Rubber, and more. Stan is here today to talk about Karmic Selling and the successes and failures that helped him design his system and grow his company. Whether you’re a speaker, sales executive, entrepreneur, you’ll discover why when you do good, even more good will come your way.   What you’ll discover: Why Stan believes that the traditional approach to sales needs to change. What made Stan leave a company just before he was due to take the top job.How he approached getting clients for his company without having a sales background. How he took a one man band to a business competing with the big consultancies. The problem that Karmic Selling solves for individuals and companies. The three biggest mistakes people and companies are making around this problem at the moment. The key ingredients of the Karmic Selling System and how it counters those mistakes. The first few steps you should take if you want to get started using the karmic Selling philosophy and system. How Stan is using speaking in business and to promote his book.   All things Stan: www.karmicselling.com www.kormacgroup.com   Books & Resources*: Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert T. [Quick Tip] Lead with the Problem - 278
I had a similar issue come up with two clients this week, and it’s a mistake I see people making regularly, not just with their speaking, but in other critical content too. This mistake can result in people not paying attention to you, lost business opportunities, and normally leads to frustration and the question, “I just don’t understand what I’m doing wrong!” What they are doing wrong is not leading with the problem.  That’s why in this episode I’m sharing: What leading with the problem means.Where you should be doing it.Why you are likely losing people’s attention. The simple exercise you can do to avoid the LinkedIn advert issue. The important check you need to make about where your audience is.Examples to illustrate.   Enjoy! Stop Being Humble and Step into Your Power with Lisa Bragg - 277

Stop Being Humble and Step into Your Power with Lisa Bragg - 277
SUMMARY Is it possible to brag in a way that attracts people to you, rather than turning them off? Lisa Bragg, author of Bragging Rights believes so, and she is here to redefine bragging and share exactly how to do it the right way.     SHOW NOTES We have been conditioned since childhood to keep quiet about our achievements. We are taught things like, ‘nobody likes a show off’, ‘stay humble’ and ‘self praise is no praise’. And the majority of us conform, stay quiet, assuming that our good work will be noticed, and we will get our reward in good time. When we see those people who are shameless self promoters we judge them and ‘tut’ and assume that they will be smited by the God of Humility… (whilst secretly wishing people knew about the great things we had done).  But then we notice they are not being called out or shamed for being a ‘show off’, in fact they’re getting more attention, and they are the ones getting rewarded with promotions, or new clients.   And then we get frustrated, bitter, and envious, which affects the way we are being and communicating and turns people off. Or … we go out all guns blazing and tell everyone everything we ever done all at once… which also puts people off. The big question is … why are we told that we should stay quiet and humble when it harms rather than helps? And how can we share our authority,  and experience  Well that is what my guest Lisa Bragg is here to answer for us. Lisa has literally written the book on how to talk about success. Her book Bragging Rights: How to Talk about Your Work Using Purposeful Self-Promotion launched in May.  In addition to being an author, she is a speaker, advisor, professional mentor and founder of MediaFace, a Toronto-based content and consulting firm. She was also a TV reporter and anchor for 15 years. I hope this show helps you step out of the shadows and share all the excellent stuff you are up to! Enjoy What you’ll discover: The catalyst for Lisa to embrace ‘bragging’ and why she had avoided it before. Why Lisa believes that modesty is a negative habit? The double standards at play in society when it comes to bragging and ‘the range of acceptable behaviour’. Why you shouldn’t market yourself for where you have been and what you should do instead. The myths around bragging that could be holding you back. Why finding a partner can help you with promotion. The three biggest mistakes people making around bragging. Three tips for promoting yourself the right way. [Quick Tip] Talking About the Plane vs. Talking About the Pain - 276
Quick tips to build your speaking confidence, skills, impact, business or engaging talk content. These tips originate from issues that come up for students, and questions from my audience. If you want to get your question answered DM me on Instagram or LinkedIN @Saraharcher15.  I come across many speakers who are struggling to connect with their audience, and as a consequence their talks fail to get them the results that they want. One of the biggest reasons they struggle is because they are doing what I call … talking about the plane vs. talking about the pain.  That’s why in this episode I’m sharing: What it means to talk about the planeWhy your audience doesn’t care about the planeWhat you need to focus on instead. Why ‘avatar’ exercises are pointlessHow to find the burning platform that will get your audience into actionThe opportunity if you can connect deeplyA special tool I created to help you get this right  Enjoy! Dare to be Different with Kyla Skinner - 275
How often, when it comes to writing in your business, has the blank page beaten you? I’ve seen so many people get stopped, or never share what they have written because they don’t think it’s good enough, or they are worried about being judged.  Just like when you speak, in your business writing too, you get an amazing confidence boost from knowing that your message is good, that your content will make you stand out and connect with your target audience.  When that happens you’re excited to put yourself out there.  So how do you shift from stuck to successful? How do you go from getting underwhelming results with your business writing, to your audience saying … “this person gets me and my problem, I think I need to work with them”? That’s where this show comes in. My guest today is Kyla Skinner, copywriter and business writing mentor.    She helps business owners harness the power of personality to better connect with their audience, stand out in today’s increasingly noisy market and attract new clients – so they can grow their business, not hold it back. As a fully accredited introvert, Kyla had herself felt shy, nervous and reluctant about showing her own personality. But that changed when she discovered the huge impact it made on growing her fledgling freelance business. Now, she’s an experienced (and award-winning) strategic copywriter, who’s built her copywriting and brand language business, The Jarrah Consultancy, primarily through word-of-mouth referrals. Over the past 20 years, Kyla has helped to position and promote hundreds of brands, including many big name, global market leaders. Today, she also encourages coaches, consultants and small business owners to tap into all this insight and expertise via her dedicated membership community, Copy Café. Enjoy!   What you’ll discover: How Kyla became a copywriter and why personality matters to her.The problem with generic writing and using tools like chat GPT.What it means to ‘show’ your personality in your writing and the difference it makes to your message. Why small business owners struggle to connect with their audience in their copy. The three words that Kyla wrote for a Subaru ad that tells a big story. How to approach ‘daring to be different’ if you are more introverted. The difference between bland business writing versus writing with personality. The gap that Kyla found small business owners falling into, and how she filled it. Examples of results business owners have got by stepping out of their comfort zone.Three tips for how to get more personality into your writing in a way that feels natural and not forced. The surprising differences Kyla experienced as a copywriter creating her own signature talk. How speaking has been working for Kyla and her business   All things Kyla: https://copycafe.co.uk/  https://www.linkedin.com/in/kylaskinner/  Books & Resources*: Maverick!
