Today is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, and believe it or not, immediately after his assassination in 1968, many campaigned to create a national holiday in his name. It would finally be signed into law in 1983 when Ronald Reagan was president, and it wasn't until January 20, 1986, that the official first holiday was celebrated. Interestingly, many states resisted observing this holiday and it wasn't until the year 2000 that it was finally observed in all 50 US states.
