Lessons Learned Living Abroad for 10 Years: Visas, Language Barriers and Letting Go with Faith Mabry
173: Allison interviews her friend Faith Mabry who she met on a trip to The Netherlands last fall. The two crossed paths at Faith’s second-hand designer store and immediately hit it off. They ended up going to dinner the next night and Allison stayed at Faith’s for a week in her spare bedroom. We’ve been getting a lot of questions about moving abroad, making friends in a new city and how to take the leap so we thought it would be perfect to have Faith come on the show as she has been living abroad for almost a decade now!Faith shares her experience growing up in California and how her love for music inspired her to travel and attend various festivals. The venues, fashion and festival goers helped broaden her perspective which made her want to travel more. When the opportunity to study abroad in Europe in 2015 was presented, she jumped at it and has been living abroad since!Faith shares her love story of meeting her husband in Amsterdam, living in Australia and The Netherlands. While living abroad is a beautiful life-changing experience, we keep it real by discussing the challenges, including letting go of your old life and building a new one, not being able to come home for every family emergency and more.TAKEAWAYS:Moving abroad can be a challenging but rewarding experienceLanguage barriers can be overcome with time and effortIntegrating into a new community requires openness and willingness to learnHobbies and interests can shape our experiences and help us connectBeing vulnerable can lead to unexpected love stories.Moving to a new country requires effort to integrate and learn the languageInviting people is key to building connections in a new placeMaking friends with locals can be challenging as they are settled in their livesEstablishing a home and roots in a new country takes time and investmentMaintaining relationships with people back home can be challengingLiving abroad means letting go of the old life and building a new oneMENTIONS:Faith Mabry Personal InstagramFaith’s Shop - Revive Instagram, TikTokSPONSORS + DISCOUNTS: Get Shopify Point of Sale for your business! WWYBD?! Tough Love On Victim Mentality, Relocating Across The World and Growing Apart From Friends
It’s the last Friday of the month, so you know what that means - a new WWYBD?! episode, where we answer listener submitted questions. Listeners can submit questions any time via our website, and then we pull questions to fit a specific theme. The girls give a proper catch up. Allison shares surprising (or is it not surprising at all?) updates about her extended time in Colombia! Ceara is planning her upcoming trip to New York for a fun wedding-related partnership. Questions Answered:Tips on how to stop having a victim mentality?I hate my job and want to move to Hawaii. None of my friends will move with me. Is it too risky to move alone? I think it’s badass.I just found out one of my best friends from uni has moved to a new country without telling me - I know we drifted apart after uni, but I would have liked to say goodbye... My fiancé’s friend group has been leaving us off invites to events the last few months. I woke up this morning, saw all their stories, started crying about it and I feel like such a loser. It just hurts to feel like this and be in a literal group chat with them when they’re super mean. Secret Hater Friends, Putting Labels on People and Ditching Perfectionism
It's been awhile since we just had a casual chat with you guys! We're pausing the wellness series for a week to catch up.Allison shares an update about her living situation, an upcoming girls trip to Tulum and her current thoughts on her sobriety journey.Ceara catches up about attending the Eli Rallo “I Didn’t Know I Needed This” live book tour/show and being asked to co-host a segment on stage. She also talks about a recent Galentine's Day party. The conversation then shifts to a hot take on friendship advice from a viral TikTok and we discuss the notion of secret hater friends. We also discuss the etiquette of birthday dinners - expectations on how to split the bill. We wrap up with advice around drinking, sobriety, letting go of labels, and ditching perfectionism. TAKEAWAYS: Baking can be a fun and comforting activity, and it's convenient to have homemade snacks on hand.Hosting an Airbnb can be a rewarding experience and an opportunity for personal growth.Having a fitness routine that combines different types of workouts can lead to better results. Not all friendship advice on social media is accurate or applicable to every situation. It's important to have realistic expectations of friends and not rely solely on social media validation. The etiquette of who pays for a birthday dinner can vary, but it's generally the responsibility of the person who invited everyone to pay. Consider the financial situation of your friends when planning events and splitting the bill.Sobriety is a personal journey and it's important to find a balance that works for you.Don't let labels restrict you and be open to evolving and changing.Take advantage of opportunities to travel and have fun, even if they may not align with your usual budget.CHAPTERS:(00:00) Introduction and Podcast Format(03:03) Wellness Series and No Direction Episode(04:52) Baking Pumpkin Bars and Freezing Leftovers(06:44) Airbnb-ing and Future Plans for a Hostel(08:35) Discussion on Hostels and Traveling(09:30) Fitness and Workout Routines(11:22) Moving Heavy Mattresses and Fitness Goals(12:39) Speaking Engagements and Podcast Tours(19:17) Attending Live Shows and Galentine's Day(23:42) Discussion on Friendship Advice on TikTok(28:50) Importance of Ratings and Reviews(32:11) Disagreement with Friendship Advice on TikTok(39:06) Seeking Validation and Constructive Feedback(40:34) Discussion on Who Pays for Birthday Dinners(41:30) Splitting the Bill(44:16) Election Year(45:15) Labels and Perfectionism(46:43) Drinking and Sobriety(49:03) Enjoying Life and Letting Go(53:50) Trip to TulumSPONSORS + DISCOUNTS: Factor - Real nutrition, made simple. Home Health, Clutter Clearing and Space Alchemy with Ansley Emerson
Jan 12 2024
Home Health, Clutter Clearing and Space Alchemy with Ansley Emerson
We are delighted to bring on Ansley Emerson for our deep dive into environmental wellness. This year, we are focusing on environmental wellness through the lens of our physical home space and our spiritual inner space. We thought this conversation was an especially important one to have in January when colder temperatures cause us to be inside more.Ansley is a space alchemist, which is the art of intentionally transforming your internal and external space in order to create your most authentic, fulfilling and free life. She has created powerful space alchemist modalities that she learned through integrating these practices in her own life such as when she manifested and took aligned action towards finding her dream home on Maui at an incredible location, in her budget, with a lot of space and from a local owner. We talk about energy clearing, clutter clearing, physically cleaning and intuitive feng shui. She shares how a home can be a mirror that reflects what is going on inside of us; as our relationship to physical spaces can show patterns present in other areas of our lives such as people pleasing tendencies or holding on to the past in a way that doesn't serve us anymore. Regardless of your living situation, Ansley encourages us to invest in home health. She emphasizes the importance of creating your unique home sanctuary as a strong foundation so you are able to thrive in other areas of your life that align with your goals and needs. You don’t need to wait until you have a "forever home.”  TakeawaysCreating a supportive home space is essential for overall well-being and can have a profound impact on all aspects of life.Clearing clutter and releasing attachments to material objects can create more flow and abundance in life.Intuitive feng shui focuses on what feels good and aligns with personal intentions, rather than rigid rules and guidelines.Energy clearing can be done through physical cleaning, using tools like Palo Santo or herbs, and setting clear intentions.Working with a space alchemy coach can help individuals transform their lives by creating intentional and aligned spaces. Finding support and creating offerings that align with individuals' needs is crucial.Authenticity and open-heartedness are key qualities of a good friend.Chapters(00:00) Introduction(01:13) Wellness Series Introduction(03:00) Peaks of the Week(04:04) Guest Introduction: Ansley Emerson(06:11) Ansley's Journey into Space Alchemy(10:46) Finding a Home in Maui(12:32) Creating Sanctuary in Temporary Housing(15:30) Creating a Supportive Home Space(20:11) Clearing Clutter and Letting Go(21:09) The Impact of Home on Well-being(22:58) Reflecting Internal Patterns in the Home(24:51) Exploring Feng Shui(26:38) Intuitive Feng Shui(28:46) Starting the Process of Creating a Healthy Home(31:07) Clearing Clutter and Releasing Attachments(33:01) Challenging Areas and Emotional Attachments(37:56) Working with a Space Alchemy Coach(40:16) Energy Clearing and Setting Intentions(43:56) Using Palo Santo and Other Tools for Energy Clearing(46:21) Cleaning Supplies and Ethical Sourcing(47:44) Working with Clients and Transforming Lives(48:53) Working with Ansley(49:47) Finding Support and Offerings(50:12) Qualities of a Good FriendABOUT ANSLEY: Ansley is formally certified as an Integrative Holistic Health Coach (IIN HCTP) and Certified Clutter Coach (Linn Method for Clutter Clearing™). 2024 Wellness Series Kick-Off: What We Learned from Last Year's Goals to Guide a Healthier Year
We are so excited to kick off the first episode of 2024 with the second season of our wellness series. If you were with us last year, welcome back! We’re happy to have you and can’t wait to bring on more guests who can share their unique perspectives on each dimension. If you’re new here, check out our 2023 kick off episode “Self-Care Series: The 8 Dimensions of Wellness” that dives deep into each dimension. The dimensions wellness are (according to Dr. Peggy Swarbrick) emotional & mental, environmental, financial, intellectual, occupational (career), social, physical and spiritual. Now that we’ve been aware and practicing this concept for over a year, it has allowed us to look at our own wellness journeys with this lens as a guiding light for creating balance, joy, abundance, nourishment, sustainable routines and greater opportunities. While we are far from experts, or where we want to be ourselves, we hope that by sharing our stories and ideas on the concept, it might inspire and help shape your goals for the year ahead. Either way, we’re grateful you’re here with us!TAKEAWAYS: Building relationships with local banks can lead to better financial opportunities and a sense of community.Creating positive customer experiences can contribute to the success of a business.Being generous and showing appreciation can have a positive impact on others. It is important to appreciate and respect different life paths.Setting goals for physical, emotional, mental, intellectual, and financial wellness can lead to personal growth and well-being. Financial wellness involves budgeting, managing expenses, and creating streams of passive income.Occupational wellness focuses on career satisfaction, avoiding burnout, and finding life's purpose.Social wellness includes maintaining relationships, personal expression, and fostering connections.Environmental wellness encompasses living a sustainable life and creating a positive home environment.Spiritual wellness involves finding purpose and meaning in life, whether through religion or personal beliefs.Chapters: (00:00) Introduction to the Wellness Series(03:06) Building Relationships with Local Banks(06:03) Creating a Positive Customer Experience(09:13) Being Generous and Showing Appreciation(10:31) Building Community and Successful Businesses(13:47) Appreciating Different Life Paths(16:12) Exploring Astro Cartography(19:11) Reconnecting with Old Friends(21:30) Physical Wellness Goals(25:35) Emotional and Mental Wellness Goals(26:43) Intellectual Wellness Goals(30:26) Financial Wellness Goals(40:46) Financial Wellness(44:34) Occupational Wellness(50:09) Social Wellness(51:07) Environmental Wellness(53:11) Spiritual WellnessSPONSORS + DISCOUNTS: This episode is sponsored by Pager, the best app for organizing your screenshots!
