Jeff Berlin - Overcoming CHILDHOOD TRAUMA & WHY he DIDN’T JOIN VAN HALEN
On this Jeff Berlin interview: his early childhood trauma and how it impacted him, “falling apart” from years of emotional pain and his subsequent recovery… his awkward first meeting with Eddie Van Halen, early lessons learned playing jingles in NYC after Berklee… great story how he hooked up with Bill Bruford and the doors that opened up for him as a result, his Top 3 Musical experiences (VERY cool), funniest things that happened to him in the studio and on stage, backstories to some of the tracks on his new Jack Songs LP & hard-earned lessons he learned from making this record… best decision he ever made, great advice for musicians, and LOADS of stories. Awesome interview, very courageous and sincere Cool Guitar, Music & ELG T-Shirts!: http://www.GuitarMerch.com  Originally from NYC, Jeff is one of the most highly-regarded jazz and fusion bassists of the modern era, and a well-respected bass educator. He's known for his tone and technique, and has been one of the major figures in firmly establishing the electric bass as a solo instrument. His career took off in 1977 when Yes founding drummer Bill Bruford handpicked him to play in his band. Jeff’s other recording and performance credits include a who’s who of jazz and rock: Larry Coryell, Pat Martino, John McLaughlin, Yes, Eddie Van Halen, Frank Zappa & many more. Just to address this up front, Jeff’s done dozens of interviews on the controversial comments he’s made about bass players learning by academic teaching vs being self- taught. We’re not going to address this issue, because Jeff’s owned a lot of his mistakes here and has made public apologies to the people he needed to. But what we will talk about today is the genesis of what prompted the fairly dramatic shift in his position, and his ongoing emotional recovery from the things that contributed to this situation in the first place.  Subscribe & Website:  https://www.everyonelovesguitar.com/subscribe Support this show:  http://www.everyonelovesguitar.com/support

Von Kopfman, “He was about to COMMIT SUICIDE and then he HEARD THIS PODCAST…”
On this Von Kopfman interview: Von shares the REST of THE STORY about what happened after he came on Everyone Loves Guitar. In hopes of helping others heal from a similar trauma, Von shared something quite heavy - an experience he had at 10 years old, when he was sexually molested by a neighbor. What happened next, was totally unexpected: He received over 500 emails from people around the world - sadly, 400 of them had had similar experiences. He also received an email from someone who told him he was about to commit suicide, but hearing Von’s story made him change his mind and seek out help.   You can watch and listen to Von’s original interview here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1qrhsVmqcc NOTE: If you have been a victim of sexual abuse, please call the National Sex Abuse Hotline at 800-656-4673 and if thoughts of harming yourself, or suicide have crossed your mind, please call the Suicide Crisis Hotline at 988 Cool Guitar, Music & ELG T-Shirts!: http://www.GuitarMerch.com  Von Kopfman is a prolific songwriter, guitarist and author, originally from Emporia, Kansas. Recorded his first solo LP in 1994 when he was 29 years old, since that time he’s written over 3,000 songs, recorded 36 LPs, including 6 LPs with his band project called Big Daddy Loud - a popular regional rock band in Kansas. Originally, Von wanted to share his experience with the hopes of potentially motivating and inspiring others to heal, and to not just let the after affects of this trauma, eat you up for the rest of your life. But in reality, what actually happened... was completely unexpected. So I wanted to have Von back on the show to share his post-show experience because it’s amazing what happens when you share something so powerful like this. It really touches others.   Subscribe & Website:  https://www.everyonelovesguitar.com/subscribe Support this show: http://www.everyonelovesguitar.com/support

Robbie Fulks - ENVIRONMENT has a STRONG EFFECT
On this Robbie Fulks interview, how growing up in the south and incessant reading influenced him, a stint in NYC that didn’t work out so well, backstory to some of his best songs, the joy of finally having his first solo album on a record label, working with Producer Steve Albini and how this unconventional combination works, street falafel, roller coasters, why “Profanity is fun!”... and more!      Cool Guitar, Music & ELG T-Shirts!: http://www.GuitarMerch.com     Robbie is a singer, recording artist, instrumentalist, composer, and songwriter. He is by far, one of the smartest, and most clever lyricists I’ve had the pleasure of listening to. He’s a great storyteller and is able to develop and articulate specific and particular character traits that bring his characters to life. He evokes emotions in you as the listener, about the characters and the very real scenarios of life they find themselves in - which are basically the ups and downs of the common man. Over the last 26 years, Robbie’s released 13 albums. His 2016 record Upland Stories was nominated for a Grammy for Best Folk Album and the song "Alabama at Night" was nominated for a Grammy for Best American Roots Song. Let me just say one thing before we get started - this guy is a national treasure and more people need to be hip to what he’s doing. Not to sound like a fanboy, but to combine such meaningful lyrics with such beautiful melodies and Robbie’s voice, at this level of excellence... makes him an incredibly rare talent.   Subscribe & Website:  https://www.everyonelovesguitar.com/subscribe   Support this show: http://www.everyonelovesguitar.com/support
