The Colorado Avalanche and the Pittsburgh Penguins both had something to play for. The Avs could have been sitting atop the Central Division with a win while the Penguins would have crept back into a Wild Card spot for the playoffs. The Penguins seemed to want their playoff spot more than the Avs wanted divisional clout. The Avs six game winning streak came to a crashing stop Wednesday night as the Penguins made life difficult for Colorado, getting them off their game and forcing them to be inconsistent with their style of play. The Avs grinded, and even pulled to within one following a Devon Toews power play goal, but a rebuttal goal and then an empty netter sealed this games fate. The Avs also let Jeff Carter skate around the ice untouched. Which is a little odd considering this was the first time the teams faced each other since Carter sent Cale Makar to miss time with a concussion thanks to Carter's elbow. Nothing? The Colorado Avalanche cruised to a 5-0 win over the Chicago Blackhawks Monday night to bring their winning streak to six games, and they did it on the backs of guys like Denis Malgin and Kurtis MacDermid. You read that right. The Avs are getting great production up and down the lineup right now, which is making things for guys like Mikko Rantanen easier. Rantanen also found the back of the net in this one, leaving him a hat trick away from getting 50 on the season. Will he get them all against the Pittsburgh Penguins Wednesday night?? Jared Bednar took the day off to sign on with the Avs for another three years behind the bench. Of course we are biased, but we think we have the best coach in the league, and to keep him around for years to come gives us a sense of comfort. The Colorado Avalanche came together as a team in the last week, and that's what can happen out on the open road. The Avs have really found their game over the past month, and during this recent four game road trip, really seemed to put them emphasis on tightening up their defensive structure and game plan. Sure, Detroit had 34 shots on goal, but the Avalanche made sure very few were of the high danger variety. After a sluggish first period, the Avalanche kicked it in to high gear and found their scoring touch, while making Detroit work for every opportunity they could conure up, and in the end, the Avalanche beat the Red Wings for the 10th consecutive time. Three games north of the border, three wins for the Colorado Avalanche. This one a 5-4 win against the Ottawa Senators, but not before some controversy and a last second save of the year candidate by backup goalie Jonas Johansson. The Avalanche seemed to be cruising to their third win on this four game road trip, scoring two early goals in the first. But what people are saying about this up and coming Ottawa team are true. They have the talent and skill to become a contender and soon. The Avalanche were able to fend off a third period comeback by the Sens, culminating with an incredible save by Johansson while the Sens were on a 5 on 3 power play. The Avalanche also got the benefit of a pretty terrible call. Lars Eller's first goal as a member of the Avalanche will be a memorable one, as everyone assumed play was going to be stopped due to icing or Sens goalie Mads Sogaard covering up the puck. Neither brought along a whistle, Eller noticed that, so he stuffed the puck that was sitting right next to Sogaard in the net. That goal turned out to be the game winner. So much for a high-scoring matchup. The Colorado Avalanche set the tone early, and while Montreal got a couple goals back late in the 3rd period, this one was well in hand as the Avs got game one of their road trip under their belt with a 8-4 win over the Canadiens. There wasn't much negative you could take away from the game, except another Avalanche injury. Artuuri Lehkonen, in his first game back in Montreal after being traded to the Avs, had two goals and an assist in less than 10 minutes of ice time. Why did he have less than 10 minutes of ice time you ask? Because his second goal he deflected off his hand which resulted in him breaking his finger. He is headed back home to Denver for surgery and will hopefully be ready for the playoffs. The Altitude broadcast said it early in the game between the Colorado Avalanche and Los Angeles Kings. Both teams are difficult to beat when they get the first goal. We just need to accept this is who the Colorado Avalanche are. When they are good, they are so very good, when they are bad.....you know the rest. The Avalanche will be a playoff team. They have positioned themselves to at the least accomplish that. Which team they are once the playoffs begin is another story. The Colorado Avalanche had been hitting their stride lately, playing a "full 60" over the past several games. It was going to be difficult to do the same thing against a very good New Jersey Devils team, and New Jersey showed you why early in the game, building a 3-0 and then a 5-1 lead. It was an interesting weekend for the Colorado Avalanche both on and off the ice. On the ice, the Avalanche finished their 3rd of three straight back to backs in dominating fashion with a 5-1 win against the Winnipeg Jets. Then came home the next day and ran over the Calgary Flames, 4-1. Out of 12 possible points in the three back to backs the Avalanche came away with 11. Yea, this team is hitting their stride at the perfect time. Off the ice, Chris MacFarland and Joe Sakic made a duo of depth trades, both of which have us scratching our heads a little. One sent Shane Bowers to the Boston Bruins for backup goalie Keith Kinkaid, while the other brings back defenseman Jack Jonson for Andreas Englund. Another team would have seen the Edmonton Oilers take a 3-0 first period lead and saw it as a mountain too difficult to climb. The Colorado Avalanche looked at it as they had a lot of time to get back into the game. Despite the Oilers twice pushing their lead back to two goals after the Avs had trimmed it to one, Colorado found the net late in the 3rd to tie it up, then Mikko Rantanen held on to the puck for just the right amount of time for Edmonton goalie Jack Campbell to get out of position so he could roof the game winner with 20 seconds left. The Avs took both games of their weekend back to back and continue to climb towards Winnipeg and Dallas above them in the standings. The Colorado Avalanche have been buyers at the trade deadline over the past few seasons, and the general consensus is that they will be again this year. But the trade deadline for this season for the Avalanche is going to be a tricky thing. When a team is active at the deadline like the Avalanche have, at some point all your big trade chips start to wear thin. The Avs still have some prospects and picks they could part with, but going off of past seasons, they don't like to give away either so easily. Could they? Sure. Will they? That's a difficult question to answer. The Avalanche also are not big on rental players. They entertained it last year with Claude Giroux, but it is not something they frequent year after year. Once again, the Avs are attached to some of the bigger names in the market, like Ryan O'Reilly and Jonathan Toews. It will take some creativity to bring in names like that, which the Avs could be willing to do. But we also should prepare ourselves for the Avalanche to be on the quiet side.
