Why Chronic Illness Patients are Dismissed, Mistreated, and Misunderstood (with Dr. Erin Nance)
This week on Calling in Sick, I’m joined by Dr. Erin Nance — board-certified orthopedic hand/wrist surgeon, founder of FeelBetr, and author of Little Miss Diagnosed: A Surgeon’s Guide to Breaking Bones and Bending Rules. She’s not just a medical provider — she’s a disruptor who deeply understands the trauma of being dismissed and misdiagnosed in modern medicine. Together, we dig into: ⭐ Why women’s symptoms are often dismissed — and the phrase “you’re just anxious” is still weaponized ⚠️ Why chronic illness diagnosis timelines lag — and how to advocate when you’re not being heard 🤝 How to use online communities, forums and social media safely to get answers and avoid misinformation ⚕️What practical phrases & scripts you can use at your appointment to avoid getting dismissed 🌍 The broader health crisis behind infertility and slow population growth… and why it’s not “women choosing careers” Whether you’ve been gaslit in the exam room, dismissed for your symptoms, or want to know how to build a better care team — this one’s for you. xx, Alex 💬 Comment Prompt: What’s the *most* gaslight-y thing a medical provider has ever said to you? The Top 3 Things Trauma Therapy Has Taught Me So Far
29-07-2025
The Top 3 Things Trauma Therapy Has Taught Me So Far
This week on Calling in Sick, I’m pulling back the curtain on something I’ve never really talked about in depth: trauma therapy. Not wellness aesthetic therapy. Not “journal and manifest” therapy. Real, gritty, life-interrupting trauma therapy. In this episode, I’m sharing: 🧠 What trauma therapy actually is — and why I started ⚠️ Why I was afraid when life started to feel… good 💊 How my mindset has changed on medical trauma & how it affects my daily life 🛑 If I think trauma therapy is financially, physically and emotionally worth it From childhood illness to hospital PTSD, I’ve carried more “little t” trauma, or what I thought was “little t” trauma, than I realized… and trauma therapy has helped me stop minimizing it. This isn’t a step-by-step guide or a promise of a fix. It’s just me, sharing what I’ve learned so far. So whether you’re considering therapy, afraid to open that door, or deep in your own healing arc — this episode is for you. Sending my love, as always! xx, Alex 💬 Comment: What’s one thing therapy helped you realize… even if you weren’t ready to hear it? Jake Haendel on Locked-In Syndrome, Pain, and What It Means to Be Alive
This week on Calling in Sick, I’m joined by  ⁨@miraclman31⁩  -- podcaster, speaker, and survivor of one of the rarest neurological conditions on earth: Locked-In Syndrome from Acute Toxic Progressive Leukoencephalopathy (ATPL). Jake’s story is raw, gripping, and—somehow—hilarious .We’re digging into: 🧠 What the mind does when you’re fully aware but can’t move 💥 The absurdity of pain, and the power of humor in surviving it ☁️ What near-death teaches you about presence, faith, and the fragility of life 🪫 Why full recovery might be the wrong goal—and what really matters in healing Whether you’ve lived through something unbelievable or you just feel unseen in your pain, this episode is your reminder: the human spirit is feral in the best way. Dr. Karan Rajan on Medical Dismissal, Chronic Illness, and the Rise of Health Misinformation

Dr. Karan Rajan on Medical Dismissal, Chronic Illness, and the Rise of Health Misinformation
This week on Calling in Sick, I’m joined by the one and only Dr. Karan Rajan (@dr-karan-explores) — NHS surgeon, educator, and one of the most trusted voices cutting through health misinformation on TikTok. This episode is all about the emotional and medical consequences of constant dismissal and gaslighting — especially for women and people with chronic illness. When you’re told “it’s just anxiety” over and over again, it’s no wonder so many patients turn to the internet in search of answers. And unfortunately? The internet doesn’t always get it right. We’re digging into: 💭 Why “you’re just anxious” has become medicine’s favorite (and a dangerous) catch-all 🧠 How being dismissed by doctors leads patients toward TikTok, Instagram, and wellness rabbit holes 🔍 Why some unlicensed “experts” thrive online — and how to navigate health content without shame or pseudoscience 🗣️ Real advice for self-advocacy at medical appointments 💚 The one thing Dr. Karan wishes medicine had more of Whether you’ve walked out of a doctor’s office questioning your reality, or found yourself spiraling through symptoms, supplements, and side effects — this episode is your reminder: You’re not alone. You’re not dramatic. You’re not just anxious. xx, Alex This week, let us know... What’s a moment you knew something was wrong — but no one believed you? I Need Boundaries With Myself?! Chronic Illness, Overdoing It, and Knowing When to Sit Down

I Need Boundaries With Myself?! Chronic Illness, Overdoing It, and Knowing When to Sit Down
Last week, we talked about giving ourselves permission to have fun — but this week? We’re swinging the pendulum back the other way. Because I made zero adjustments and just had fun… which was great until it wasn’t. Truth is, one of the hardest people to set boundaries with is actually ourselves. In this episode, I talk through what it looks like to chase joy, crash hard, and try to recover without beating yourself up. Spoiler alert: I’m recording this after two straight days of IVIG, so I’m right in the thick of it. Here’s what we get into: 🚷 Why we need to set boundaries with ourselves to make life sustainable 🧳 The “oops I had fun and now I’m in spoon jail” cycle 🌿 Ottine road trips, mineral springs, and my new “Come With Me” content series 🪑 The adjustments I’m making in real time This one’s for the people who are 0 or 100, all or nothing, go-go-go until your joints give out. You’re not lazy. You’re not failing. You’re just human — and that’s more than enough. Thanks for Calling in Sick with me, again 💛 xx, Alex Comment: What’s one boundary you’re learning to set with yourself lately? Need to catch up on last week's episode? Here! Too Sick for School, Too Sick for Fun? Chronic Illness Guilt and the Rebellion of Joy
16-06-2025
Too Sick for School, Too Sick for Fun? Chronic Illness Guilt and the Rebellion of Joy
I’m back on the mic this week after a little solo pod pause — and I’m kicking things off with something I’ve been thinking about (and living) a lot lately: joy guilt. You know that old rule: “If you’re too sick to go to school, you’re too sick to have fun?” Yeah, that one. Turns out, it doesn’t translate to life with chronic illness. But we still carry it — and it quietly shapes how we see ourselves, how we mask, and how we justify joy when we’re supposed to be struggling. In this episode, I dig into: 💭 Why we fear being seen laughing or “doing too well” 😰 The guilt spiral when symptoms shift — and the fear of not being believed 🎭 How chronic illness can force us to perform misery to protect our empathy 🔥 The lies we were taught about rest, pain, and productivity 🩵 And the truth: Joy is not a betrayal. It’s part of the healing You don’t need to earn your joy. You don’t have to be falling apart to rest. You are not required to apologize for your life, your sparkle, or your softness. So f*@k it — I’m having fun. And I hope you will too. Thanks for Calling in Sick with me 💛 xx, Alex 💬 Comment : Have you ever felt like you had to downplay your joy just to be taken seriously? Sasha Pieterse-Sheaffer on Chronic Illness, Identity & Healing in the Public Eye
This week on Calling in Sick, I’m joined by the one and only, Sasha Pieterse-Sheaffer — who you might know from her starting role in Pretty Little Liars or Inherent Vice. Today, Sasha spends her time as an actor, podcaster, founder, advocate, and fellow chronic illness warrior. We sat down and talked about her real life plot twist: getting diagnosed with PCOS and epilepsy, navigating autoimmune symptoms, and redefining herself while the world was watching. We also chat:🎥 What it was like getting sick in the public eye, without a formal diagnosis🗞 The internet’s reaction to body changes — and reclaiming the narrative👶 Motherhood, identity shifts, and the “new you” that chronic illness brings💬 The mantras, mindsets & moments that get her through the hard stuff Sasha shares her raw truth about rebuilding trust with her body, the hardest lessons she’s learned, and the surprising silver linings she’s found along the way. Whether you're in the thick of chasing a diagnosis or learning to live life on new terms, this episode is a gentle reminder: you are not alone, and healing doesn’t mean going back — it means going forward as someone new. Why Eastern Medicine Works for Chronic Illness, with Dr. Jennifer Ashby
This week on Calling in Sick, we’re getting grounded, energized, and totally fascinated by the ancient wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). I’m joined by Dr. Jennifer Ashby — a TCM doctor at UCSF — to explore the intersection of Eastern and Western care for whole-person healing. We get into the foundational teachings of TCM, the biggest surprises patients experience when they first try it, and how it’s being used right now in hospital settings like UCSF (yes, really!!). We also talk: 📣 Why TCM is so much more than acupuncture & herbs 🧠 The reason why TCM doesn’t separate mind, body & spirit 🌊 Micro-changes that have macro impacts to our health 📦 Why what you think impacts how you feel Whether you’re new to holistic wellness or just tired of treating symptoms without addressing the why — this one’s full of grounding insight, accessible tools, and (as always) a little cozy chaos. Extra benefit... Dr. Ashby is one of the most relaxing humans I've had the pleasure of being around... she is Xanax in human form. Thanks for Calling In Sick with us 💛 xx,Alex 💬 Comment: Have you ever tried acupuncture, herbs, or any form of Eastern medicine? What was your experience? Surviving Life Chaos & Chronic Illness Flares - One ER trip and Home Invasion At a Time

Surviving Life Chaos & Chronic Illness Flares - One ER trip and Home Invasion At a Time
This week on Calling in Sick, things are a little different — and a little chaotic. I was too discombobulated to record a solo episode, so Cooper (my husband) hopped on the mic with me. We laughed, we spiraled, and then we got real about why life has felt so hard lately: In this week’s episode, we talk: 💥 A nasty IVIG reaction 🚑 A surprise ER trip 🛑 A home invasion 💉 Starting a new oral chemo 🏡 Family visiting 🫠 And feeling... not like myself at all We talk about what it’s like when everything hits at once, and how chronic illness can make navigating life with a chronic illness that much harder. Even though it’s been overwhelming (to put it lightly), there’s something comforting about saying it all out loud — and laughing through the absurdity when we can. This episode is for anyone who feels like they’re in survival mode and missing the person they used to be. You’re not broken. You’re carrying more than most people can even imagine. Revisit: Processing Your Chronic Illness and Redefining Your Identity
Hey sweet friends—no full episode this week, just a short 10-minute update from me. Between a rough IVIG reaction, an unexpected ER trip, and a literal attempted home invasion (yes, really), I’m throwing it back to a past episodes: Processing Your Chronic Illness—because wow, I need to listen to this one this week too!! This week on Calling in Sick, I’m diving into something that doesn’t get talked about enough: the identity shift that happens when you're living with a chronic illness — whether you have an official diagnosis or not. There’s a specific kind of grief that comes from realizing you're no longer the person you once were. The person who had endless energy. The person who didn’t have to think twice about plans, goals, or dreams. The person who didn’t wonder, "Do I look sick enough for people to take me seriously?" In this solo episode, I’m opening up about: 💭 How chronic illness impacts your sense of self (even before a diagnosis) ⚡ Why comparison — to others and to your old self — can feel so brutal 🩺 The silent pressure to “look” sick enough for care 🧠 How processing a chronic illness mirrors the stages of grief 📚 Plus: My tips, tricks, and personal mindset shifts that have helped me find myself again If you’ve ever looked in the mirror and thought, "I don’t even recognize my life anymore," — this one’s for you. You are not alone in this identity shift. You are not broken. You are just becoming someone new. How Chronic Illness Changes Our Definition of Ambition and Drive

How Chronic Illness Changes Our Definition of Ambition and Drive
This week on Calling in Sick, I’m getting real about something I never thought I’d question: Am I still ambitious? There was a time when I crushed my to-do list before lunch, never let an email sit unanswered, and found purpose in being productive. But now? I procrastinate. I forget things. I carry a running to-do list that I never finish. And between the brain fog, pain, meds, and fatigue… I started to wonder if I’d lost my drive entirely. But then it hit me… maybe ambition just looks different now. In this solo episode, I’m opening up about: 💭 What it’s like to lose your “high-functioning” self 💊 The quiet shame of feeling dulled by meds 🔥 How chronic illness reroutes your ambition from speed to survival 🌱 Why softness, slowness, and intention might be the new success 📺 Plus: My current comfort-watch in the One Brain Cell segment (spoiler: it’s called warm hug in TV form) This one is for anyone navigating big identity shifts—especially if you’ve had to ask yourself: “Who am I without the hustle?” My answer? Darling... you’re not behind. You’re becoming. xx, Alex 💛 💬 Comment: Do you feel like your ambition or drive has changed since getting sick? How have you redefined success? Kwame Appiah (Love is Blind) Opens Up About Chronic Illness and Healing

Kwame Appiah (Love is Blind) Opens Up About Chronic Illness and Healing
This week on Calling in Sick, I’m joined by the incredible Kwame Appiah—someone you might recognize from Love Is Blind (Season 4), but today, we’re going far deeper than reality TV. Kwame opens up about his real-life health journey: the early signs he ignored, the emotional toll of not having answers, and what it meant to finally get a diagnosis—and then face the hard work of rebuilding from there. We talk about the frustrations of navigating a broken healthcare system, the grief and grit that come wit h chronic illness, and how healing isn’t just physical—it’s emotional, relational, and deeply personal. My favorite part? Kwame’s take on gratitude, growth, and positivity. We also dive into how illness reshapes not just our bodies, but our relationships—with others and with ourselves. The Blueprint to Making New Friends with a Chronic Illness

The Blueprint to Making New Friends with a Chronic Illness
This week on Calling in Sick, we’re talking about something that’s both terrifying and beautiful: how to make new friends when you’re chronically ill. Let’s be real—chronic illness changes your social life. While some relationships run the distance, there are far too many that end… some fade out, some end loudly and some just stop making sense. But as painful as that can be, it also creates space. Space for people who get it. Who don’t need explanations. Who meet you where you are now. In this episode, I’m unpacking: 🌿 How chronic illness can be a filter for real, aligned friendships 💔 Why losing friends isn’t always a failure—it’s often a shift ✨ How to make new friends that actually work for your energy, needs, and lifestyle 🧃 What “low-spoon friendship” looks like and why it’s actually magic 📱 Where to find spoonie friends who get you This isn’t just about friendship breakups—it’s about friendship breakthroughs. Sending love (and new friend energy)! xx, Alex 💛 💬 This week’s Comment Prompt: What is one thing you are putting on your “talking-points” list for chatting with new friends? How to Rest Without Guilt When You’re Chronically Ill
This week on Calling in Sick, we’re talking about one of the most underrated tools in the chronic illness toolbox: the intentional duvet day. If you’ve ever felt guilty for resting, questioned if you're "sick enough" to slow down, or struggled to explain why you need a full day in bed after a good day—this episode is for you. I unpack why these days are essential for long-term management (not lazy days!), how to spot your “check engine lights” before a crash, and how I’ve learned to communicate my need for deep rest without feeling like a burden. So tune in to hear: ✨ My favorite Duvet Day skincare & hydration essentials (hello dewy skin girlies!) 🛏️ What a Duvet Day actually is (and how to make it restorative, not just reactive) 🎁 Why receiving care is not a weakness—and how to reframe the guilt 💡 How to explain your needs to others using Spoon Theory & the Stoplight Framework 📺 One Brain Cell rec of the week: Drive to Survive and why I’m suddenly a motorsport girlie now For this week, put your latest hyper-fixation during duvet days in the comments section!! I need some new recs ;)  As always, thank you for listening and resting with me 💛 xx, Alex Timestamps: 00:00:00 Welcome back to Calling In Sick! 00:02:30 Alex’s Life & Health Updates of the Week 00:12:33 Alex’s Picks of the Week (Filterbaby, Doré) 00:15:45 What is a Duvet Day & how to keep it intentional? 00:19:20 Reframing Duvet Days 00:27:05 How to communicate that you need support (Spoon Theory, Stoplight Analogy) 00:32:05 One Brain Cell TV Show: Drive to Survive 00:34:52 Thank you for listening!!! ---------------------------------------------------------------- Stay connected and follow social: • Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/callinginsickpod/ • TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@callinginsickpod • Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61558234607568 • Substack - https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61558234607568 ---------------------------------------------------------------- Powered by: Just Media House -- https://www.justmediahouse.com/ Produced by: Alexandra Wildeson — https://www.instagram.com/alexandrawildeson/ Alex’s Picks of the Week: • FilterBaby Faucet Water Filter: https://go.shopmy.us/p-14894038 — ALEXANDRAW10 for $10 off! • Dore Facial Serum: https://go.shopmy.us/p-14894003 — ALEXANDRA10 for 10% off! #podcast #podcastclips #ChronicIllness #DuvetDay #RestWithoutGuilt #SelfCare #AutoimmuneDisease #SpoonieLife #SickGirlEra #CallingInSick #DisabilityAwareness #ChronicFatigue #InvisibleIllness #Burnout #RestIsProductive #HealthJourney #SpoonieSupport #FlareUpTips #MentalHealth Learn more about your ad choices.
