An 'Almost' Goalie Fight, NHL Headlines + Ask R&D Anything
Travel ‘turbulence’ kicks things off as Ray recounts a full-day adventure to the passport office, and Dregs gets stuck with an airport ‘Karen’. At least the guys didn’t cross Jordan Binnington! The St. Louis Blues goalie’s antics vs. the Minnesota Wild ALMOST led to a goalie fight with Marc-Andre Fleury. Ray points out that even Binnington can't slow the Wild, Minnesota is rolling with points in 14-straight games. Headlines continues with the QMJHL’s plan to ban fighting in the league. The guys discuss implications of the decision, and if there could be a change to the NHL’s rules on fighting to follow. Ray recounts finding ‘quiet space’ on the ice in the often brutal melees of the 80’s and 90’s NHL.  Dregs continues his coverage of the annual GM meetings in Florida, and ongoing discussions of extending the current 5-minute overtime. Ray shares his support for move, and proposes a Brian Burke idea of how to make OT more exciting.  Duty calls for Kris Abbott as he was tied up during recording today. In his absence, the guys discuss Betano’s odds for teams making the playoffs: Islanders likely to clinch a spot, and the Calgary Flames 'burning' out. In an expanded Ask Ray & Dregs Anything segment, the guys answer your questions, and give out FREE merch! The former NHL GM gave an in-depth look at front offices and how they assess their needs, why ‘swinging for the fences’ with a big trade target doesn’t always work out, and how depth off-season additions are often more valuable.  In Headlines, the guys discuss the New York Rangers growing pains and Ray questions whether Kane and Panarin can rekindle the fire they had with the Blackhawks. A fan forcing the reporting of Ryan O’Reilly’s finger injury, McDavid’s chances of hitting 70 goals, and shake-ups made by the Golden Knights and Minnesota Wild are also covered.  What has made the Boston Bruins SO good this season?? Trading ALL The Draft Picks w/ Former NHL GM Dave Nonis
Regular R&D podcast contributor, and former NHL GM, Dave Nonis joins the show just in time for the trade deadline! Nonis gives his front-office perspective on Tampa Bay Lightning GM Julien Brisebois’ trading away ALL the draft picks, the perceived value of picks to an organization, and if Kyle Dubas should be to blame if the Leafs don’t win in the playoffs. Plus, Nonis takes us back to the deadline-deal for Roberto Luongo that almost-was.  In Headlines, the guys talk Toronto Maple Leafs acquisitions McCabe and Lafferty, Eastern Conference powerhouse teams, and if changes to the playoff format would keep better teams in the mix for longer. A league warning on trading LTIR or injured players has Ray asking why there isn’t similar accountability for the Coyotes given the ongoing Chychrun situation. T’ing Up The Great One w/ Former NHL Ref & ESPN Analyst Dave Jackson
ESPN’s Rules Analyst, Dave Jackson, has the credentials to back up his title, he’s officiated over 1500 NHL games! The former referee shared stories from stepping the ice with legends of the game; hearing it from the crowd for giving Wayne Gretzky an unsportsmanlike penalty, policing an all-out brawl, and debating rules with Ray Ferraro. Plus, the monumental change that instant video review brought to the game, and dealing with the ‘soul crushing’ reality of social media. In Headlines, the guys discuss a couple of minor-looking deals that might set the stage for something major. Ottawa Senators/Vegas Golden Knights’ cap maneuvers ahead of NEXT WEEK’S NHL trade deadline, prolonged sitting of key players for ‘trade-related’ reasons, and is Patrick Kane’s hot-streak enough to silence questions on his health?  After Ryan O’Reilly tallied a hat-trick (scoring a quarter of the goals he’d scored all season in one night), the guys talk chemistry with new Maple Leafs teammates, and credit due to Mitch Marner for once again proving he is an elite playmaker. Betano’s Kris Abbott was away today, likely spending his winnings from the one time he bet on the Leafs and won. The guys take a look at the (rightfully) low odds at anyone not named McDavid winning the Hart Trophy, and the race for the Calder trophy with Matty Beniers leading the rookie category thus far.
