59. Critical thinking to dispel Avidya with Matt Huy, author of Physiology of Yoga
Dec 16 2022
59. Critical thinking to dispel Avidya with Matt Huy, author of Physiology of Yoga
The yoga world is rampant with teachers saying things because their teacher's teacher said them. Some of these things are true, and some of them are purely based on speculation or personal experience (which, ultimately, can be marred with avidya!). Many yoga teachers have low scientific literacy because it feels daunting, confusing, or unhelpful. This epsiode, and Matt's book (and upcoming live course!) is here to help with that! Matt's mission is to empower yoga teachers to feel more confident in their teaching! So what is Avidya? Matt teaches us how typically, the higher quality of evidence, the lower the biases of that evidence. Lower quality evidence is loaded with personal biases--or avidya! So how do you dispel that avidya? Learn to understand research! Avidya can loosely be translated to ignorance--where you don't even know what you don't know  (see also Dunning Krueger effect) -- notice how people that know a lot, like Matt, are really careful about the claims they make. Be wary of people who don't do that. Learn more about the Kleshas on this Episode 21 of The Science of Light: Perception is Reality: Intro to the Kleshas Does reading research feel daunting, confusing, or full of jargon? Do you want to make sure your cueing (or what your yoga teacher says) in a yoga class is really TRUE? How can we learn to move our bodies in safe ways (or teach our students not to fear moving their bodies in new ways) WITHOUT using fear based language? This episode is for you if you want to learn the thought process (critical thinking) behind understanding research by way of several (relevant to yoga practice) examples.  About Matt: Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, Matt was studying biology at university when he enrolled in a dance class upon the whimsical suggestion of a friend. Something changed in him during that first dance course; he discovered an absolute love of movement. He next enrolled in a yoga class and decided he wanted to study movement instead of biology. Several years later, he completed a BA in Dance from California State University Long Beach, a yoga teacher training at a Sivananda ashram in India, an several other movement and body-oriented certifications (like pilates and massage). In 2022, he completed a Master's degree in Sport, Health, and Exercise Science at Brunel University London, where he focused on exercise physiology and pain science. His master’s research focused on the impact of yoga teachers’ language on their clients--examples of which we cover in today's episode.  Along with his colleague Dr Andrew McGonigle, Matt co-authored The Physiology of Yoga, which is an evidence-based exploration of how yoga affects the physiology of the various systems of the body. Matt's yoga story Pain science: chronic pain as a field of researchBiomedical model vs biopsychosocial modelAn example: cueing chaturangaAddressing preventing overuse injuries without fear based language using the science of training adaptationsMyth or fact: bending the spine forward and back too much will cause it to "snap like a credit card" or bending the spine creates bulging discs (learn the answer supported by research) An example of how research conclusions get distorted via blogs, articles, etc (and how to decipher of if what you're saying is evidence-based or not)Myth or fact: "yin yoga targets the fascia" -- (or "regular yoga" does not target the fascia in the same way yin does). Does holding a stretch for longer give better results in targeting the fascia? Tune in to find out!Should yin be practiced on cold or warm muscles? An example of the thought process of research and how to determine if things are "true" or evidence based or notCritical thinking, scientific literacy in yoga, and the dangers of parroting things your teacher's teacher said that are ultimately based purely on speculation or personal experience (do twists really detoxify the liver??)  To work more with Matt: 8 week book club starting in January: https://www.matthewhuy.com/service-page/live-online-8-week-book-club-1  www.matthewhuy.com www.thephysiologyofyoga.com/ Instagram: @yogawithmatt FB: @matthewhuyyoga To work more with Rosemary: 2022 Yoga + Astrology Planner Join the membership/support this podcast! You can hear Dr. Andrew McGonigle's lightbulb moment of putting the pieces his colorful background and journey together to put something out there that the world needs, and that he could make money at!   The outcome of that journey was definitely something (in my opinion) the yoga world needs more of! This shows the value of asking yourself "what is it about my path that makes me unique and my offering unique?" then actually acting on that information and creating the space to do so!  Topics and themes of this episode: following your heart & moving from traditional to more expressed - learn the structure and the rules and then follow your heart and add your spin manifesting the life of your dreams more around what you want life to feel like, rather than specific outcomes (like the whole point of the Bhagavad Gita!) not restricting yourself based on fears, or how you conceptualize your place in the world behind the scenes look at the process of book writing (highlighting SOME ideas about what manifesting your dream life could be like) using transferrable skills! when you pivot to something seemingly unrelated critical thinking & how to apply it myth or fact in yoga: honoring the ancient philosophy while also honoring ahimsa and not doing harm given our current scientific knowledge specific deep dive into yin, fascia, cold muscles discussion in the yoga world nothing is separate, including in anatomy, it is all interwoven bring science and magic together, using science to more fully experience magicanswering questions brings up more questions - keep exploring and following curiosity! nuances of differences between anatomy and physiology  To find Andrew and his work: His website: www.doctor-yogi.com Instagram: @doctoryogiFacebook: @doctoryogiandrew30 hour online yoga anatomy course: https://onlinecourse.doctor-yogi.com/p/yoga-anatomy-online-courseBook club starting 9.8.22: https://www.doctor-yogi.com/workshops  To find Rosemary and her work: Yoga + Astrology facebook group Dharma worksheet Instagram - Facebook - Wisdom - Social Audio - Link In Bio  If you enjoy this podcast and want to say cheers or support this work, buy me a coffee! 49. Getting to the Root Cause & Brain Health with Laurel Brennan
Laurel Brennan is the founder and owner of RootCauseology where she helps women optimize their brain health and reduce dementia risk by creating therapeutic partnerships and addressing root causes. She is a registered and licensed occupational therapist with a master’s degree from Texas Woman’s University and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Roanoke College. Laurel is also a certified health coach, registered yoga teacher and functional medicine practitioner. In all areas of her work, she is a facilitator--guiding clients, patients or students toward wellness by creating an environment with a Just-Right challenge. She has a love for people, a passion for lifelong learning and feels honored to walk hand in hand with others on their health journey.   She was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2006 and chose to address root causes rather than opt for pharmaceutical intervention. Her mother died from dementia in 2019 following years of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome thus leading to a particular interest in the connection between autoimmune disease and dementia. The learning, healing and love shown by others on her personal path motivates her to be that beacon of light for others going through similar challenges.   She loves spending time hiking, walking and talking with girlfriends, community gardening, composting and looking for little daily joys. She lives in Westminster, MD with her husband, three children, father and canine buddy, Rocco. Dive into the episode to hear topics we covered like: 1. Always start with mindset. (Yoga may be a part of this). 2. What is a Just-Right Challenge and why is it so critical in a health Journey and behavior change? 3. What is the PlusOne MinusOne behavior change approach? 4. Top ways to protect brain health.   "Are you at risk for cognitive decline?" quiz is on Laurel's website. 48. Ayurveda for Pitta Season (Yoga to beat the heat of summer!)

48. Ayurveda for Pitta Season (Yoga to beat the heat of summer!)
Ayurveda translates to "The Science of LIFE" and it encapsulates so much wisdom on how to live a yogic lifestyle--how to take your yoga practice off the mat and incorporate Vedic wisdom into everything you do. From dinacharya (daily routines) to diet and more, Ayurveda makes crafting a good life super simple! In Ayurveda, everything in the material world is governed by three main doshas or qualities--Vata (air and ether elements), Pitta (fire and water elements) and Kapha (earth and water elements).  Summertime (here in the northern hemisphere) is governed by Pitta dosha, and we are definitely starting to feel the heat! If you're experiencing signs of pitta imbalance (tune in to find out what those are! but some examples are burnout, dehydration, overheating, etc), this episode is for you! I share wisdom from Ayurveda about how to easily tone down burnout in your life. Resources: 2022 Yoga + Astrology Planner Join the membership/support this podcast! 47. Meditation, Motherhood, and Marketing to Increase Your Impact with Carolyn Choate

47. Meditation, Motherhood, and Marketing to Increase Your Impact with Carolyn Choate
This episode feels to me like a great place to leave off as I take a maternity leave! Carolyn shares so authentically and vulnerably about her story, uncovering sooo many valuable and applicable insights to many areas of life--meditation practice, parenting and work-life balance, following your intuition into authenticity, and marketing. The marketing insights, in my opinion, are valuable to anyone--even if you have no desire or need to learn HOW to market online, understanding digital marketing in this way will make you a more informed consumer for sure! Carolyn Choate discovered a gift for digital marketing in her late thirties (which came as a great surprise since her degree is in poetry...) She sees sales funnels the way others see auras. And she’s putting that talent to good use by working with manifestation and mindset coaches to amplify their voices and bring their gifts to the world.   To find Carolyn: www.instagram.com/increaseyourimpact www.increaseyourimpact.life/bookacall Resources: 2022 Yoga + Astrology Planner Join the membership/support this podcast! 46. Soul Mapping for Moving through a Dark Night of the Soul with Jaishree Dow-Spielman

46. Soul Mapping for Moving through a Dark Night of the Soul with Jaishree Dow-Spielman
In this episode, I interview Jaishree Dow-Spielman, a spiritual mentor, healer and educator who empowers teachers, leaders, couples and children to be grounded in sacred truth and sovereign relationships. She shares very candidly about her own Dark Night of the Soul, and how she used yoga and meditation to move through it. Along that story path, we covered the origins of the word "Guru" and its meaning, and wove in a lot of other yoga philosophy, like the Gunas (sattva, rajas, tamas), and avidya. Jaishree is the author of two books, that she generously gives away for free on her website. In our conversation, we talk about what the books are for, how they arose, and who they can help. She also discusses the framework of her Soul Mapping Matrix that she uses to help individuals (and couples, with her partner).   To find Jaishree: www.jaishreeyoga.com Resources: Join the membership/support this podcast! 45. Yoga for Burnout, Stress, and Overwhelm
Have you ever felt like you had more to do than you could realistically accomplish in the time you needed to have it done? Or have you ever felt so depleted and exhausted that resting didn't rejuvenate you in the same way it did before? Like, you can't destress because when you try to relax you can only think about how you should be working on the things that stress you out? If you've experienced these things, or otherwise just felt disconnected and disenchanted by your work or daily activities that used to light you up, you might be experiencing burnout. In this episode, I dive into what burn out is, how it overlaps with and/or differs from other things like depression, adrenal fatigue, chronic stress, and overwhelm. Then, of course, I share yoga philosophy lessons as well as yoga practices and astrology techniques for self-study to help deal with burnout, overwhelm, and potentially depression.   Resources: Yoga + Astrology facebook group Dharma worksheet Join the membership/support this podcast! 2022 Yoga + Astrology Planner Readings + Events Chart Calculator   I'd love to connect with you on Social Media: Instagram - Facebook - Wisdom - Social Audio - Link In Bio  Or you can poke around on my website to find out more about who I am and what I do: www.yogiscopes.com If you're reading this or listening, I'm grateful that our paths have crossed and would love to connect with you on instagram or facebook!
