25. A Study in Securities Fraud
After 20 years in the hedge fund and private equity industry, Mark was sent to federal prison for securities fraud. Lost Generation writer F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote, “There are no second acts in American lives.” But while this may be a story of fraud and theft, it’s also a story of redemption—a story of second chances. In episode 25. A Study in Securities Fraud, I speak with Mark Varacchi. Mark Varacchi has over 20 years of experience in the hedge fund and private equity industry. In 2017, he was charged with securities fraud. Mark took full responsibility and worked with the government to make restitution. After 15 months in federal prison, he reevaluated his priorities. He has since founded the Federal Prison Consultancy, which prepares clients and their families for incarceration. He has a Bachelor of Science in finance and now speaks to compliance and financial professionals about fraud, compliance, and ethics. NOTES:  Transcripts of this episode are available here. On a cool October evening in Mexico City, not far from the central plaza, a respected Spanish merchant and all ten of his servants were massacred by three men wielding machetes. 20. Arsenic and Old Midwives
Sophocles wrote: “Trust dies, but mistrust blossoms.” In 1920, in the village of Nagyrév, husbands trusted wives. Children trusted mothers. And everyone trusted the midwife, Zsuzannah Fazekas. I speak with Patti McCracken in episode 20. Arsenic and Old Midwives. Patti McCracken is an award-winning journalist whose articles have appeared in Smithsonian magazine, The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian, Christian Science Monitor, and many other publications. She has worked in various newsrooms, including the Chicago Tribune, where she was on the foreign/national desk and was twice a Knight International Press Fellow. Bonus Episode: A Conversation with Dr. Ann Burgess

Bonus Episode: A Conversation with Dr. Ann Burgess
In the mid-1970s, Robert Ressler and John Douglas of the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit (BSU) began interviewing serial offenders. However, it wasn't until Dr. Ann Burgess created a 57-page questionnaire that they recognized interesting patterns in the data. Behind these two famous men was the female Mindhunter, whose groundbreaking ideas transformed criminal profiling into a helpful methodology. In this Bonus Episode: A Conversation with Dr. Ann Burgess, I speak with one of the original Mindhunters, Dr. Ann Burgess. Dr. Ann Wolbert Burgess, D.N.Sc., APRN, FAAN, is an internationally recognized pioneer in the assessment and treatment of victims of trauma and abuse. She's received numerous honors, including the Sigma Theta Tau International Audrey Hepburn Award, the American Nurses’ Association Hildegard Peplau Award, and the Sigma Theta Tau International Episteme Laureate Award. Her courtroom testimony has been described as “groundbreaking,” and she has been called a “nursing pathfinder.” She has been designated a “Living Legend” by the American Academy of Nursing, the academy’s highest honor. Her research with victims began when she co-founded, with Boston College sociologist Lynda Lytle Holmstrom, one of the first hospital-based crisis counseling programs at Boston City Hospital. She then worked with FBI Academy special agents to study serial offenders and the links between child abuse, juvenile delinquency, and subsequent perpetration. Her work with Boston College nursing colleague Carol Hartman led to the study of very young victims and the impact of trauma on their growth and development, their families, and their communities. Her work continues in the study of elder abuse in nursing homes, cyberstalking, and Internet sex crimes. Clarence Elkins was serving life in prison for murder and sexual assault. He claimed he was innocent. DNA at the crime scene was from an unknown male. If only Clarence could get some of Earl's DNA and have it tested. In episode 16. The Wrongful Conviction of Clarence Elkins, I speak with Ben Cotterill. Ben Cotterill was born and raised in Stirling, Scotland, studied psychology at the University of Strathclyde, and completed his MSc in Applied Forensic Psychology at the University of York in England.
