They were the mega corporations of the times. They specialized in specific cash crops such as cotton, tobacco and sugar cane. They also had a tremendous need for labor, and at this time in American history, that meant slave labor. Understandably, there were many attempts by slave laborers to find ways of fleeing these plantation ending their lives of servitude. Who doesn’t love the sight of a classic motel alongside the highway? Generally, people check into a motel to have a safe place to rest and then check out the next day. These bridges easily connect us to other places that we were once cut off from. Having to drive a long distance or take a ferry in order to reach our destination. Now, we head out over a bridge without a second thought, imagining nothing out of the ordinary.
