Born in Bogota, Colombia in 1991 and have lived in Columbia SC for 20 years. I have been an avid part of the local community, wether through my beer blog brand the Brewsky Brothers, charity fundraising and event planning with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and networking groups like BNI. Hickory Hill is a fourth-generation family dairy farm nestled in historic Edgefield County, South Carolina. The Dorn family was established at its current location in 1764. Little did their ancestors know that would be the start of a rich tradition of family and farming. In the 1950s, long before anyone had heard of mega-farms or agri-corporations, Maysie (Dorn) and James Marvin started the dairy farm. It was then passed down to Jim and Marie Dorn who continued raising Holstein cows and producing milk. Jim was heavily involved in the dairy industry, serving on the South Carolina Dairy Commission and the National Dairy Board. Today, their son, Watson, and his wife, Lisa, along with their children, Daniel (Darsey) and Courtney (Cole), work those same pastures. For years, it was a dream of Watson’s to one day bottle their own milk. In 2008, Watson and Lisa took the leap, and together they bring you Hickory Hill Milk, an exciting new beginning for their family farm. After a visit to NYC, Katharine Heath (later Katharine Heath Manning Perry) saw what Harriman’s organization was doing and wanted to bring this concept home to Columbia. She gathered ten of her friends and together they formed the Junior League of Columbia. Katharine was a visionary who sought to create positive change, and this change has now been occurring for more than 100 years.   Today, our league is over 1,400 members strong, and our volunteers continue to address unmet issues and needs in the community by providing aid with their dollars, hands and time. As the needs of our community have shifted over the years, the league has used its resources and knowledge to find new areas of need and has worked to meet them. True to this vein, the league recently underwent an extensive collective impact study to identify these needs and after a great deal of research and thoughtful conversation, we have announced a shift in focus area.   Starting this year, the JLC will concentrate on promoting healthy relationships for women and children. This new focus area reflects our commitment to empowering women and children to lead fulfilling lives. To support this work, we have announced seven new community partners who we will work alongside, to create lasting change. Play! Olly loves to play! Why? He was teased and isolated badly. You know, the kind that makes for a great "rise-out-of-the-ashes" story. But that is for anotter day. So no surprise Olly seeks a place to fit in. Turns out some giant otters were in a zoo not too far away. Olly began an epic journey to pursue the huge opportunity. Meeting the giant otters was a BIG deal. Olly learned a ton from them. He discovered what real family looks like. He learned how much community mattered. But the biggest impact on Olly came in observing the zookeepers and human visitors. More on that later... Of course living with the giant otters was paradise for Olly. He had a family. He belonged. Well...so he thought. The giant otters, in their grand wisdom, knew their lot in life was to embrace a life of lazy captivity, but that was not for Olly. It took some big convincing, but eventually they persuaded Olly to return "home" to make an enormous splash with his kind. Time for the "rise-out-of-the-ashes," right? Nope. Returning was otterly miserable. The river otters thought he was all the more odd. Sure, they still played together (featuring a lot more teasing), but everything was surfacy. Oh, Olly did have his "rise-out-of" moment. It's the typical defeat-the-bully story to become the hero. The story is actually otterly epic, but again, for anotter day. Olly's confidence was soaring. He really wanted to make a difference. A really big difference. An otter-this-world difference! (Cue amazing music). So he broke all wild animal rule and entered the human world. Dr. Brent Munnerlyn, PharmD is running for Lexington County Council in District 3. He is challenging incumbent Darrell Hudson to represent the people who live in the west Lexington area and out Highway 378 to the edge of Lake Murray. This District includes some of the more affluent residents south of the lake. Munnerlyn grew up in Lexington County in District 3, and attended Lexington District One schools from elementary through high school. He graduated from the University of South Carolina Pharmacy School and owns an independent pharmacy called My Pharmacy and Optical in District 3. He has built his practice and now has about 10,000 patients in and around the District 3 community and across the Midlands. In the past, he managed the Health & Wellness business for Walmart across the midlands and other outlying areas. Responsibilities included managing the pharmacies, health care centers, and optical divisions that employed several hundred people. He was able to increase the company’s profits and grow top line revenue during his 10 years in this role. He put systems and standards in place that helped the company manage their costs and reorganized departments and stores that were underperforming. In this job, he was recognized for his work and was asked to come to the company’s headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas to help revamp benefit policies. During his time in Bentonville, he was able to identify a $82 million loss and also helped improve time off benefits for employees that they continue to enjoy today. Munnerlyn also owns Munnerlyn Pyrotechnics. This business puts on large, professional fireworks shows like the one on Lake Murray, Peach Festival, Fort Jackson, Columbia Fireflies, Blowfish and the Town of Lexington. He’s also opening a new store in the next few weeks at 5921 Edmund Highway, Lexington. This is near South Lake Drive (SC Hwy. 6) and Edmund Highway. When asked why he was running for Lexington County Council, Munnerlyn said, “I find Darrell (Hudson) to be a person that makes decisions without thinking about how they impact others. I would say that the harm he does isn’t always intentional, however, I have addressed him in both a public forum and one on one directly before the county passed its fireworks ordinance. He talks with you, sometimes seems as if he’s agreeable or understands, but then votes with a very vocal minority that shows up at council meetings raising their voices over an issue that can affect thousands, and then votes for that minority that’s at these hearings. I find that the younger generation, working people, and very busy people simply can’t make these meetings, but they still should have a voice on things. He basically is neglecting to consider the district’s residents that cannot show up at a council meeting and weigh in on an issue. The multiethnic communities that are affected by the fireworks ordinance is just one of the groups that Darrell ignored. This is a prime example of the way that people are being discriminated against in Lexington County because of unnecessary regulations. But, after making the decision to run I am now seeing this same pattern of decision making occurring with development issues that are going to have a profound impact on our children’s future.” When you listen to Munnerlyn talk, you immediately feel his energy and passion for people and issues.
