Welcome to a special episode of "The Trial of Karen Read," where today, we find ourselves inside the courtroom for a hearing in the case against Karen Read. As we set the stage, let's briefly summarize the case that has gripped the public's attention.    Karen Read is facing charges related to the death of John O'Keefe, whose unexpected passing under mysterious circumstances led to intense police scrutiny. The case hinges on a combination of forensic evidence, alleged motives, and Karen's own statements to the police. Prosecutors argue that Karen had both the means and opportunity to commit the crime, citing contentious relationships and financial disputes as possible motives. Can Kohberger's Love for Nighttime Exploration Explain His Whereabouts?
In the episode of "Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski," guest Robin Dreeke, a retired FBI Special Agent, discusses the controversial alibi defense presented by Bryan Kohberger, accused of multiple murders. Kohberger’s defense claims he was out for his routine late-night hike and stargazing when the murders occurred. His attorneys are bringing in an expert to corroborate this with cell phone tower data, despite his phone being off on the night of the murders. The podcast delves into the challenges of validating such an alibi against strong physical evidence like DNA found at the crime scene. It also explores the implications of using behavioral patterns and technological data in crafting a defense strategy, highlighting the skepticism surrounding the effectiveness of such an alibi in the face of damning evidence. **Main Points of the Conversation:** - Kohberger’s defense claims he was engaged in routine late-night activities away from the crime scene. - An expert will testify on the cell phone data to partially support Kohberger's alibi. - The cell phone was off on the night of the murders, creating a gap in the alibi. - DNA evidence found at the crime scene strongly contradicts the alibi defense. - Discussion on the limitations and challenges of using behavior patterns and technological data in legal defenses. - Doubts about the credibility of Kohberger's alibi given his personality traits and evidence pointing to his presence near the crime scene. #BryanKohberger #TonyBrueski #RobinDreeke #HiddenKillersPodcast #CellPhoneData #DNAEvidence #AlibiDefense #CriminalJustice #MurderTrial #BehavioralAnalysis Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? How Will LDS Beliefs Impact the Jury's Decision in Chad Daybell's Trial?
In an episode of "Hidden Killers," hosted by Tony Brueski, defense attorney Bob Motta discusses the ongoing trial of Chad Daybell, focusing on how Daybell’s and Lori Vallow’s peculiar interpretations of LDS beliefs might influence the jury, predominantly composed of LDS members. Motta explains the complexities of presenting a case intertwined with local religious beliefs in a community like Rexburg, Idaho, where the majority are LDS members. The conversation highlights recent developments, including new video evidence suggesting Daybell's consciousness of guilt, which could significantly impact the jury's perception. Motta and Brueski delve into the challenges of defending someone whose alleged crimes are deeply entangled with distorted religious doctrines, discussing how these elements complicate the legal proceedings and juror biases. The trial's coverage, including the potential implications of the jurors' religious affiliations and the role of new evidence like the video of Daybell in the patrol car, underscores the trial's complexity and the broader social implications. Main Points of the Conversation - Discussion on the influence of LDS beliefs on the jury and community perceptions in Chad Daybell’s trial. - Examination of new video evidence suggesting Chad Daybell's consciousness of guilt. - Challenges posed by the local majority of LDS members in the jury pool and legal community. - Analysis of how Lori Vallow's influence and the couple’s bizarre religious beliefs could affect the trial's outcome. - Considerations on how jurors reconcile their personal beliefs with the legal requirements of the trial. - Impact of new evidence on the state’s case against Chad Daybell and potential strategies of the defense. - Reflections on the intersection of religious belief and criminal justice in high-profile cases. #ChadDaybell #LoriVallow #BobMotta #HiddenKillersPodcast #LDSBeliefs #ConsciousnessOfGuilt Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Did Karen Read 'Black-Out' or 'Block-Out' The Night Of John O'Keefe's Death?
In the podcast "Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski," featuring psychotherapist and author Shavaun Scott, the discussion explores the reliability of memory in legal contexts. Scott delves into the fallibility of human memory, explaining that unlike a digital recording, human brains construct and reconstruct events, creating a narrative that may not align with actual events. This narrative construction can lead to significant discrepancies in eyewitness testimony and personal recollections, affecting their reliability in court cases. The conversation also touches on the potential for memories to be influenced or altered by suggestions, even leading to completely fabricated memories, as discussed in examples of memory research and therapy malpractices. Additionally, the topic of memory blocking, particularly in traumatic events or during states like blackouts, is examined, highlighting how memories formed during these times may be unreliable or completely absent. **Main Points:** - Human memory is highly unreliable and is not a straightforward recording of events but a reconstructive process influenced by perception and narrative construction. - Eyewitness testimonies can vary dramatically due to the suggestible nature of human memory, leading to different recollections of the same event by different people. - Past research and clinical examples illustrate how easily memories can be implanted or altered, especially in vulnerable individuals or through suggestive questioning. - Memories can also be blocked or not formed at all during traumatic events or in states like alcohol-induced blackouts, further complicating their use in legal proceedings. - The discussion raises concerns about the use of such unreliable memories in court, emphasizing the need for caution in handling eyewitness accounts and personal testimonies. #HiddenKillersWithTonyBrueski #ShavaunScott #HumanMemory #EyewitnessTestimony #MemoryResearch #LegalReliability #MemoryBlocking Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? In this episode of the "Hidden Killers Podcast" with Tony Brueski, guest Eric Faddis, a former felony prosecutor and current defense attorney, discusses the upcoming trial of Karen Read. The conversation revolves around the complexities introduced by Read's defense team proposing an alternative suspect in the case, which has been allowed into trial by a judge. Faddis explains the implications of such a defense, noting it could complicate the prosecution's efforts and potentially lead to questions about their initial case focus. The discussion also touches on the broader issues of law enforcement conduct and investigative oversight, such as ignored evidence from doorbell cameras and internal investigations into police misconduct. These factors may significantly impact the jury's perception of the prosecution's case and introduce reasonable doubt about Read's guilt. Main Points of the Conversation - Karen Read's defense is employing an alternative suspect strategy, recently approved for trial. - Explanation of how an alternative suspect defense works and its potential impacts on the trial and prosecution. - The challenges and embarrassment this strategy might pose for the prosecution if Read is acquitted. - Discussion on law enforcement's role in the case, including potential biases and missed investigative steps. - Mention of specific investigative failures, such as the non-examination of ring doorbell footage. - Potential consequences of law enforcement misconduct on the prosecution's ability to secure a conviction. - Exploration of how jury perceptions might be influenced by perceived incompetence or misconduct by police. #KarenRead #EricFaddis #AlternativeSuspect #LegalStrategy #LawEnforcement #HiddenKillersPodcast #TrialAnalysis Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Will There Be A 2nd Chad Daybell Trial Because Of Ineffective Counsel?
In this episode of "Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski," retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer discusses the complexities surrounding the Chad Daybell trial. The conversation delves into the potential inadequacies in legal representation highlighted by sanctions against an uninvolved attorney who attempted to intervene in the trial using questionable tactics. Coffindaffer questions whether Daybell's primary attorney, Jon Pryor, is adequately equipped to handle a death penalty case given his lack of experience in such trials. The discussion also explores the broader implications of the trial's management and the potential for an appellate, suggesting that issues surrounding the trial could lead to a reevaluation of the verdict in the future. Coffindaffer and Brueski speculate on the influence of the LDS community's views on the death penalty and the potential inconsistencies in sentencing between Daybell and his co-defendant, Lori Vallow. **Main Points:** - Concerns were raised about the capabilities of Chad Daybell’s attorney, Jon Pryor, and the potential for sixth Amendment appellate problems due to his lack of death penalty case experience. - The episode discusses a sanction against another attorney who tried to delay the trial using improper methods, suggesting desperation or unprofessionalism within the defense’s broader legal team. - Coffindaffer predicts a conviction for Daybell but is concerned about future appellate issues that could lead to a retrial. - The influence of the LDS community on the jury's decision-making regarding the death penalty was examined, with Coffindaffer expressing doubt about the likelihood of a death sentence being administered. - The disparity in potential sentences between Daybell and Lori Vallow, due to procedural discrepancies, is highlighted as a significant issue that could impact the trial's outcome. #HiddenKillersWithTonyBrueski #JenniferCoffindaffer #ChadDaybellTrial #JonPryor #DeathPenaltyCase #LDSInfluence #AppellateIssues Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? DNA Twist in Wisconsin Murder Case: Blood at Crime Scene Not Victim's, Court Documents Reveal
In a surprising development in the gruesome murder case of 19-year-old Sade Robinson, court documents reveal that blood found in the home of the accused, Maxwell Anderson, does not match the DNA of the victim. This revelation comes from an updated criminal complaint obtained by Court TV, which highlights preliminary DNA analysis results from the Wisconsin State Crime Lab. Maxwell Anderson, 33, has been charged with first-degree intentional homicide, mutilating a corpse, and arson. The case has gripped the local community since Robinson, who was last seen alive on April 1, failed to show up for work the following day. Her car was discovered torched shortly after her disappearance, and authorities subsequently found severed human remains across the area, believed to be hers. Court records indicate that Robinson and Anderson had dinner together on the day she vanished, with eyewitnesses reporting they left the restaurant together. Initially, the discovery of blood on bedding and a wall leading to Anderson's basement seemed to corroborate suspicions against him. However, the updated complaint states, "The preliminary DNA analysis supports the conclusion that there is no support for inclusion of Robinson’s DNA in any of the blood or swabs tested, and of some of those swabs, Robinson’s DNA is excluded." During a recent court appearance, Anderson waived his right to a preliminary hearing. Scripps News Milwaukee quoted prosecutor Ian Vance-Curzan, who reflected on the DNA findings at the hearing, saying, “It indicates that the preliminary DNA supports the conclusion that there is no support for inclusion of Robinson’s DNA in the blood or swabs that have been tested.” The ambiguity over whose blood was found at the scene remains unresolved. Anderson's plea of not guilty to the charges sets the stage for further legal proceedings, with his case due back in court on May 16 for a scheduling conference. The unexpected twist in DNA evidence could play a critical role in the ongoing investigation and subsequent trial. As the community and Robinson's family seek answers, the question of whose blood was found in Anderson's home adds a layer of complexity to a case already marked by tragic and violent details. The authorities continue their investigation, hoping to uncover more evidence that could shed light on the circumstances surrounding Robinson’s death. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Stephan Sterns Charged with First-Degree Murder in the Death of 13-Year-Old Madeline Soto
In a significant development in the tragic case of 13-year-old Madeline Soto, Stephan Sterns has been formally charged with first-degree murder. The Osceola County court records confirmed the indictment, nearly two months after the young girl's body was discovered in a secluded area of rural Osceola County. The indictment details allege Sterns killed Madeline between February 25 and February 27, just days before her body was found on March 1. Madeline was reported missing after she did not return home from school. Sterns, the boyfriend of Madeline's mother, Jennifer Soto, initially told investigators he had dropped her off at school on the day she vanished. However, authorities later clarified that this was not the case, intensifying suspicions around Sterns' involvement. The case took a darker turn when disturbing evidence was found on Sterns’ phone shortly after Madeline's disappearance. On February 28, he was arrested on 60 counts related to sexual battery on a child and possession of child sexual abuse material. These charges included eight counts of sexual battery of a child under 12, five counts of sexual battery with a child aged 12 to 18, seven counts of lewd and lascivious molestation, and 40 counts of unlawful possession of materials depicting sexual performance by a child. State Attorney Andrew Bain and Kissimmee Police Chief Betty Holland are scheduled to address the public and media at a news conference on Wednesday at 4 p.m., which will be streamed live by local news outlets. This press conference is expected to provide further details on the progression of the case and the upcoming legal proceedings. In a recent court appearance, a pretrial hearing resulted in the postponement of Sterns’ trial after his defense team successfully argued for more preparation time, with the judge setting a new trial date for August 19. Sterns waived his right to appear at the hearing. As the community reels from the impact of this heinous crime, the focus now turns to the upcoming trial and the justice sought for young Madeline. The Osceola County community continues to mourn the loss of a young life cut tragically short, as they await further developments in this disturbing case. Idaho Mother Sentenced to Over 7 Years for Soliciting Murder Through Fake 'Rent-a-Hitman' Website
DeAnn Parkin, a mother of three from Ovid, Idaho, has been sentenced to more than seven years in prison for attempting to solicit a murder through a satirical "Rent-a-Hitman" website. The sentencing occurred last Thursday in Senior U.S. District Judge B. Lynn Winmill’s courtroom, following Parkin's admission of guilt nearly a year after contacting the fake site. Parkin, now 31, confessed to seeking someone to murder a woman living with her ex-husband in Wyoming. Identified only as "L.A.," Parkin accused the woman of having an affair with her husband and causing turmoil in her family due to drug abuse and alleged involvement in prostitution. Rent-A-Hitman is a satirical website that promotes itself as the ultimate solution to targeted problems, dubbing it the "Point and Click Solution" and boasting a claim of being "100% HIPPA compliant" (Hitman Information Privacy and Protection Act of 1964) on its landing page. The site features a section dedicated to customer testimonials, showcasing comments and blurred images for anonymity. One such testimonial from Phil M. of Florida lauds the service, stating, "Guido and his public relations crew at RENT-A-HITMAN were able to resolve a five-year dispute in a matter of days. Highly recommended!" Furthermore, the website offers various discount packages catering to different groups, including seniors, military personnel, and even Walmart associates. Notably, it extends a nod to Joseph Allen Maldonado, famously known as Joe Exotic, with an additional 10% off if customers mention "Cool Cats and Kittens. Parkin's intentions came to light when she reportedly provided her Idaho address and phone number, along with detailed accusations against the target, in an application on the website: “I would like (the intended victim) to stay away from my husband and my family. She has helped ruin our family and broken it up with her drug abuse and her prostitution services. She has ruined her autistic son life and leaves him with strangers along w my husband to take care of him and uses her son to get my husband to come back to her and then get him more hooked on meth so she can go out and do her own thing while breaking other families lives.” “Make her go away where she won’t ruin no one’s lives no more stops contacting my husband, give her son a better life. She has ruined my family life enough that who knows if it’s even possible to be fixed. Take her to another continent or make her disappear completely where no one hears from her again anything to make her go aways for good please and thank you.” Upon receiving this information, the website owner promptly notified the authorities, leading to an official investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), which commenced on May 23. Subsequent exchanges between Parkin and an undercover ATF agent posing as a hitman revealed the plot details. Text messages retrieved from court documents unveiled Parkin's readiness to pay for the execution, her fear of law enforcement intervention, and her indifference to the potential consequences, even expressing a willingness to sacrifice her own life. On May 24, the agent and Parkin spoke on the phone while the agent was secretly recording. During the discussion, Parkin reportedly stated she was “willing to do anything” regarding her problem and that she “did not care if it means her being in a six-foot hole… I’m fine with that.” On June 6, Parkin met with the undercover agent at her workplace in Bear Lake County. During the encounter, Mrs. Parkin reportedly confirmed her resolve to proceed with the plan, expressing a disturbing lack of concern for the well-being of the intended victim and her own son. Following this meeting, Parkin handed over $100 in cash and a diamond ring she claimed was worth $1,500, as a down payment for the hit. She also agreed to pay the remainder in installments. U.S. Attorney Josh Hurwit of the District of Idaho condemned Parkin's actions, labeling them "shocking." He emphasized law enforcement's vigilance in preventing such crimes and vowed to hold violent offenders accountable, regardless of the nature of their criminal conduct.  Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Can Melanie Gibb's Phone Call with Lori Expose the Truth in Daybell's Trial?
In the latest episode of "Hidden Killers," hosted by Tony Brueski, defense attorney Bob Motta discusses the ongoing trial of Chad Daybell. The conversation highlights significant developments in the trial, particularly focusing on the testimony of Melanie Gibb, a key witness whose insights are expected to fill many gaps in the case. Gibb, previously a close associate of Lori Vallow and Daybell, plays a crucial role in elucidating the nature of their relationship and the dynamics within their group. The discussion delves into a specific phone call between Gibb and Lori, recorded by law enforcement, which Motta describes as a "biblical slap fight," where spiritual texts are used to deflect accusations. This call is anticipated to be a pivotal piece of evidence, revealing both Lori's and Chad's attempts to manipulate religious texts to justify their actions. The podcast also covers aspects of financial fraud related to the collection of death benefits, illustrating the broader criminal activities alleged against Daybell and Vallow. Motta expresses optimism about the prosecution's strategy, noting that the initial days of the trial have set a solid foundation for establishing Chad Daybell's complicity. Main Points of the Conversation - Melanie Gibb’s testimony is crucial for providing a full narrative to the jury about the core group's dynamics. - The "scripture brawl" phone call between Melanie Gibb and Lori Vallow highlights the use of religious texts for deflection. - Financial fraud involving death benefits is discussed as a part of the crimes, indicating a premeditated aspect to the alleged murders. - The impact of the Melanie Gibb phone call on the jury’s perception of Chad Daybell’s involvement and culpability. - Discussions about the effectiveness of the prosecution’s strategy in linking Chad Daybell to the murders and the broader conspiracy. #ChadDaybell #MelanieGibb #LoriVallow #BobMotta #HiddenKillersPodcast #ScriptureBrawl #DaybellTrial Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Kohberger Likes To 'Look At The Stars', Does He Also Like To Kill College Co-Eds?
In the podcast episode of 'Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski,' featuring guest Shavaun Scott, a psychotherapist and author, the discussion revolves around the ongoing legal defense of Bryan Kohberger. Kohberger's alibi that he likes to drive around at night to stargaze, which the court initially found inadequate, is critiqued. The updated alibi adds little, merely including details about cell phone locations when the phone was supposedly off. The conversation expresses skepticism about the effectiveness of this alibi and discusses the broader implications of using competing experts in digital forensics to create confusion and potentially instill reasonable doubt among jurors. The dialogue also touches on the lack of support from those who know Kohberger personally, highlighting that no positive character witnesses have emerged, contrasting with the online communities prematurely declaring his innocence. The episode delves into the complexities and potential desperation in the defense's strategy, including an exploration of how Kohberger's behavior could be perceived by a jury. **Main Points:** - Kohberger's alibi involves mundane activities like driving at night to look at stars, considered insufficient by the court. - Updated defense includes details about his phone being off during crucial times, aiming to prove his absence from the crime scene. - Discussion on the strategy of employing expert witnesses to counteract prosecution evidence and create jury confusion. - Reflection on the lack of personal support for Kohberger, with acquaintances only describing him as odd or disturbing. - Consideration of the defense's potential long-term strategy and the challenges it faces in proving Kohberger's innocence. #Hashtags: #HiddenKillersWithTonyBrueski #ShavaunScott #BryanKohberger #LegalDefense #Alibi #DigitalForensics #JuryStrategy Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Can Bryan Kohberger's "Moonlit Alibi" Stand in Court? Insights from Eric Faddis
In this episode of "Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski," attorney Eric Faddis discusses the latest developments in the case against Bryan Kohberger, focusing on his newly claimed alibi. Kohberger claims he was out driving alone at night, observing the moon and stars, during the time of the alleged crimes. The defense plans to support this with testimony from a cell phone tower and radio frequency expert. Faddis critiques the alibi as traditional defenses usually require an alibi witness, which Kohberger lacks. The discussion also covers the strategic risks and potential impacts of introducing such an alibi, considering the existing evidence, including cell phone triangulation data that places Kohberger at the crime scene with his phone turned off during the critical times. Faddis and Brueski discuss the implications for Kohberger's defense, questioning the logic and effectiveness of presenting an alibi that might be perceived as hollow or easily contestable in court. Main Points of the Conversation - Discussion on Bryan Kohberger's alibi of being alone, driving and observing the night sky during the crime. - Critique of the alibi's strength due to lack of traditional alibi witnesses. - Explanation of legal requirements for an alibi defense, particularly the need for credible witness testimony. - Analysis of the potential role and effectiveness of a cell phone tower and radio frequency expert in corroborating Kohberger’s alibi. - The possible strategic missteps by the defense in choosing to present a weak alibi instead of focusing on creating reasonable doubt with available evidence. - Consideration of how Kohberger’s antisocial tendencies could be perceived by the jury and whether these characteristics might influence the defense strategy. - The challenges of presenting evidence when key data (like cell phone location tracking) is unavailable due to the phone being turned off. #BryanKohberger #EricFaddis #LegalAnalysis #AlibiDefense #CellPhoneData #HiddenKillersWithTonyBrueski #CriminalDefense Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE?
