In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the Caps loss to the Minnesota Wild. The Caps struggle when the opposing team scores first and today was no exception. Matt Boldy got on the board first for the Wild his first of three goals and the Caps tried to claw their way back into the game after that. The Caps did get some offensive production. Alex Ovechkin scores his 38th goal of the season on the power play to cut the deficit to 2-1. Ovechkin, the NHL's all-time leader in power-play goals, has now scored 297 power-play goals in his career. Rasmus Sandin recorded the primary assist on Ovechkin's power-play goal, his 11th point (1g, 10a) in eight games with Washington. Sandin has recorded a point in six of his eight games with the Capitals since making his team debut on March 4. Alex Ovechkin scores his second power-play goal of the game to cut the deficit to 4-2. With two goals this afternoon, Ovechkin has recorded his 167th career multi-goal game. Dylan Strome recorded his 35th assist of the season on the Capitals' second goal. Strome's 16 power-play points rank third on Washington (Ovechkin: 24; Kuznetsov: 18). later in the show Dan talks about the Caps players and what they think went wrong and what needs to change. In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the Capitals loss to the New York Rangers. The Capitals staged a third period rally, but fell short. The Capitals have struggled to win games with Ovechkin out of the lineup. Ovechkin is out with a lower body injury. Laviolette didn’t have an update on whether Alex Ovechkin or Sonny Milano would be back in the lineup tomorrow night against Buffalo.“I have no idea,” he said. “Whatever our lineup is, it’s got to be ready and we gotta win a game.”Washington is now 0-6-0 this season without Ovechkin and has dropped the last nine games overall without their leader in the mix. The Capitals did get some great scoring and production though. Nicolas Aube-Kubel scores his fourth goal of the year to tie the game 1-1. Aube-Kubel, who signed a one-year contract extension on March 3, has 11 points (4g, 7a) in 41 games this season. Aliaksei Protas recorded the primary assist on the Capitals' first goal. Protas has set single-season career highs in assists (8), points (11) and games played (44) this season. Matt Irwin was credited with the secondary assist on Aube-Kubel's goal. In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the Caps loss to the Kings 4-2. This ends the Caps 2 game winning streak. The loss also makes the margin for error for the Caps making the playoffs that much smaller. The Caps picked up a big wins against the Ducks and Sharks but when facing the surging LA King's they fell short even though they scored first. They were not able to maintain the lead and the Caps lost even though Darcy Kuemper stopped all 19 shots he faced in the first. Later Dan talks about the conversations between Brian Maclellan and Alex Ovechkin about the future of the Capitals and struggles the Capitals faced this year that led to that decision. Dan later talks about Alex Ovechkins great game where he scored his 816th goal.  Ovechkin's power-play strike moved him to 816 career goals, and he is now just 79 away from breaking Wayne Gretzky's all-time record. The goal was also his 36th of the season and his fifth in as many games. Then talks about the importance of Nick Backstrom and how he has been instrumental in his career Nicklas Backstrom recorded the secondary assist on Ovechkin's power play goal, his eighth assist of the season. It marks Backstrom's 333rd career power-play assist, passing Denis Potvin (332) and tying Teemu Selanne (333) for the 28th-most power-play assists in NHL history. In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the Capitals defeat of the San Jose Sharks. The Caps needed to come from behind to take down the Sharks. The caps did it with new acquisitions and young call and far exceeded everyone's expectation as they take down the Sharks by a score of 8-3. Rasmus Sandin played a big role with his first game with the Caps. Rasmus Sandin (0-2—2) became the fourth defenseman to record multiple points in his first game with the Capitals, joining Christian Djoos (1-1—2 on Oct. 11, 2017), Mike McEwen (0-2—2 on Nov. 27, 1984) and Jean Lemieux (1-1—2 on Jan. 23, 1976).Rasmus Sandin (0-3—3) became the first defenseman to post three points in his Capitals debut and just the seventh skater to do so. Mikhail Grabovski (1-3—4 on Oct. 1, 2013) is the only skater to record more than three points in his first game with Washington. Dan later talks about the great performance by Craig Smith who the Caps got in the trade with Boston that sent Orlov and Hathaway packing. Craig smith had two goal on the night and was most impressive. Later Dan talks about the young call-ups in Gabe Carlsson and Vincent Iorio. Carlsson, skating in his first NHL game since April as a member of the Blue Jackets, recorded a pair of assists and a plus-3 rating in 19:00 of ice time.Iorio, meantime, skated 14:48 and notched an assist, setting up Ovechkin’s second goal. In this edition of Locked on Capitals. Dan talks about the trade that sent Lars Eller to the Colorado Avalance. The Caps in return get a 2025 second-round pick. Lars Eller was on an expiring contract. Lars will be most remembered in Washington for his great play during the Capitals' Stanley Cup run in 2018. Lars scored seven goals and 11 assists in the 2018 playoffs, including three-game winning goals. Eller scored the double-overtime game-winner against the Blue Jackets in Game 3 of the opening round, the first of four straight wins for the Capitals over Columbus after beginning the series down 2-0. In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the movement before the deadline with the Capitals. Tuesday Rasmus Sandin got traded to the Capitals and sent Erik Gustafsson and a 2023 first-round pick to Toronto. John Carlson was the only Caps blueline under contract after this season. Sandin is a left-handed shot who has four goals and 20 points through 52 games this season for the Maple Leafs. He looks to be an upgrade for the Capitals. The move to send Gustafsson to Toronto was a hard one Gustafsson departs the District as the team's fourth-leading scorer with 38 points (seven goals, 31 assists), and his plus-9 is tied with Trevor van Riemsdyk for the best mark on the team. The Capitals are also once again moving Marcus Johansson. This time back to Minnesota in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft. The versatile Johansson, capable of playing any forward position and on both special teams, totaled three goals and six points in 18 games with the Caps last season, and Washington resigned the popular Swede to a one-year deal at $1.1 million last July.
