You Can Still Have Fun in the Sun - episode 153
I thoroughly enjoyed the time spent with this week’s guest, Shannon Ziolkowski.  Not only is she kind and thoughtful, I learned a lot about sun-protected clothing.  She works at Coolibar.  The name “coolibar” is a tree found in Australia that offers shade.  We met because I emailed the company asking them if they would soon be offering additional colors of a jogger pant I like.  They actually responded.  Really, how often does that happen anymore?  Enter, Shannon.  We struck up an email chat that resulted in a Zoom call  request to talk more about my thoughts regarding their products.  Now that is outstanding customer service.  I can get behind a company like that.  One that goes above and beyond what is expected.  In other words, a commitment to excellence. Before our chat, I did not know our day-to-day clothing offers such little sun-protection.  There are many who have conditions that make it challenging to enjoy activities the rest of us take for granted.  And that’s a quality-of-life issue.  I feel compelled to help share their message.  I am grateful this company exists and is committed to creating clothing that allows you to enjoy your time outside while keeping you protected from sun damage.  Thanks Coolibar.Thank you for being a part of the UY conversation. The Unabashed You website has a page for each guest of photos, quotes and a blog with embedded audio at unabashedyou.com. I Had Not Seen Myself as a Priority - episode 152
If you change the way you see things then the things you see will change.  That is the philosophy today’s guest, Patti Diener lives.  It took her a lifetime to realize how critical self care was to every part of her life.  She had not seen herself as any kind of priority.   Shifting perspective, paying attention to intention, made a world of difference for Patti. Now Patti mentors others.  She has the podcast, Beautiful Second Act, in which she encourages others to live their best lives now especially if they haven’t before.  It’s never too late to be more you, to find more joy, to find your purpose, explore your passion.  It’s either exactly where you are, stuck in some old habits that don’t serve you anymore, or it’s something better, something more.  Ask. Believe.  Receive. I Need Tough Love - episode 151
Here’s the thing.  I learn from every single person we have on, and Jessica Stoeckeler, this week’s guest, is no exception.  Becoming a mom she saw a need for clean products and joined a company that embraces that philosophy.  A self-described stressed-out person, Jessica sought relief with CBD products and found another company that has the integrity she values.  She shares both while working full-time and having a family.  The power to choose, and become a part of things we believe in.  That’s Jessica. I know I for one needed to hear how Jessica manages her time.  She has a lot of responsibilities and to attend to those well she needs a system that will help get her there.  The takeaways for me: 3 things to get done each day, certain days for certain tasks, and timed blocks on the calendar.  More structure.  More accountability.  More productivity.  And that’s not a bad thing if you balance it with the other important things in your life.  Ask Jessica.  She knows. You can find Jessica at Jessica on Instagram.Thank you for being a part of the UY conversation. The Unabashed You website has a page for each guest of photos, quotes and a blog with embedded audio at unabashedyou.com. Here is someone else I met through Instagram, Karen-Marie Gariba.  We made ourselves a nice connection and here we are.  Karen-Marie has quite a geographical story.  As you will hear, she is from Scotland.  She made her way to Canada via Hong Kong, and her husband is from Africa.  How is that for an international life?  She does have a love for the nations.Karen-Marie has written a book, Goodbye Singleness. She was thoughtful in sending me a copy and I will get reading it, pronto.  It details her time being single and how her faith brought her and her husband together.  I loved when he told her, I really like you.  It was sweet and unexpected.  She didn’t get it at first then she did.  Now it’s been 19 years of marriage, and one son.  Life is good indeed. He Likes to Fly Under the Radar - episode 149
We had David Crisp’s wife on last week.  BA Crisp.  And I have to tell you how we met because it’s extraordinary.  David wrote me an email sharing with me how wonderful is wife is, how she has survived more things than most of us go through in a lifetime, and how she is now a published author.  Would I consider having her on as a guest?  The letter contained exactly the things I love: it was authentic, transparent and vulnerable.  Of course I said yes. When I asked David to be a guest, he was hesitant.  He explained he is about being the support behind the scenes.  As I see it, everyone has a story, and I already was grateful for his.  The love he has for his wife.  Then the email she got circled in on, and the effusive appreciation she had for him reaching out to me.  Truly a beautiful thing.  I’m so glad I got a peek into the love they have for each other.  Isn’t that what it’s all about?Thank you for being a part of the UY conversation. The Unabashed You website has a page for each guest of photos, quotes and a blog with embedded audio at unabashedyou.com. From a 10-Year-Old’s POV - episode 147
This was really sweet.  Our 10-year old grandson and Ron were talking about the UY podcast as it was playing while the two of them were in the car together.  Van seemed quite intrigued with the notion that his “Mimi” did this, and that it had guests from all over the world.  He expressed interest in being a guest himself.  Why not?  He had the courage to want to do this new thing.  I admire that.Van is in the 5th grade.  Since I taught that grade for many years, this is extra special for me.  It brought back great memories.  And of course Van loves Star Wars which my former students did, I do, as it seems to bridge all generation gaps.  He may not be ready for the romance part of storytelling, we all know that will come.  Meanwhile he is quite content to put all his attention into scientists, and their discoveries.  While he might not have fleshed out all his thoughts just yet, he’s got a ways to go and I, for one, will be on the sidelines cheering him on.Thank you for being a part of the UY conversation. The Unabashed You website has a page for each guest of photos, quotes and a blog with embedded audio at unabashedyou.com. Ron and I met Carisa Santana through her brother Brian.  Brian has been on this show before in Be Your Authentic Self, episode 79 .  During our annual trip to Maui we went to hear him play at Maui Brewing Co.  (Delicious food by the way.)  Little did we know that his sister, Carisa, would be performing with him.  What a pleasure to listen to the beauty of their voices together.  It was magical.  Now here I am having my own conversation with Carisa.  It was a joy. Carisa is a gifted songwriter, singer and performer.  It seems to run in the family.  How great is it that her brother inspires her?  I got a lump in my throat when she expressed why.  While she keeps a private side, sharing with those she trusts, she also loves listening to all kinds of people.  She is genuinely interested, and will ask questions to get to know those she is having a conversation with.  That usually happens at the gigs she plays. Starting from a very young age music has always been in her life.Thank you for being a part of the UY conversation. The Unabashed You website has a page for each guest of photos, quotes and a blog with embedded audio at unabashedyou.com. What a delight it was to have a conversation with fellow podcaster, Michele Folan.  Her show is Asking for a Friend, and it targets women 50+ with subjects and guests that would be of more interest to them.  Since I’m in that audience I wanted to have her on and chat.  It turns out we have a lot in common.  We both think the Enneagram is a helpful personality tool, we are a part of blended families, and she thinks Bridesmaids is funny no matter how many times she’s seen it.We are hearing more and more about the importance of making sure you take care of yourself.  “Put your oxygen mask on first before you can show up for others,” shared Michele.  Since we’re hearing it so much maybe it is something we should pay attention to.  It makes perfect sense to me.  I also related to Michele’s need to have a creative outlet, following that desire, seeing it through, and putting it out there.  We need you all to do the same.Thank you for being a part of the UY conversation. The Unabashed You website has a page for each guest of photos, quotes and a blog with embedded audio at unabashedyou.com. Frankie Valli is his Biggest Inspiration - episode 144
Listen to the rhythm of his given name, Destino Rubiani, and his stage name is T-Bone Rube.  That just begins to describe the singularity of this energetic, happy individual.  We connected through Instagram and I could see in two-dimensions the vibrancy and passion of T-Bone.  We talked about his dedication to Frankie Valli, and his love for the music of that time doo-wop, pop, rock ’n roll, and soul.I enjoyed Rocky, the French bulldog, bellowing in the background.  T-Bone was able to give him attention while seamlessly sharing his unbridled passion for the projects that have captured his life.  He’s parlayed his love of the Four Seasons, that started as a child, into different ventures to celebrate the legacy, and to pay homage.  Plus he likes the Beatles too, especially John Lennon.  I think it’s inspiring to follow the things you love.  T-Bone is doing exactly that.Thank you for being a part of the UY conversation. The Unabashed You website has a page for each guest of photos, quotes and a blog with embedded audio at unabashedyou.com. Taking Care of Me Helps You - episode 143
We are hungry for connection.  Jennifer Tamman is right about that.  A lot of people are drowning in loneliness and could use the power of being with others.  Yet how do we get there?  Start where you are.  Start with the people nearby.  We are all looking for things that bring us joy, ways to connect.  And we want to be a part of a community that gets us as we are, our authentic selves, accepted and loved.  So start showing up as that.  You.Her emphasis on self-care needs to be far better woven into the priorities of our lives.  “You can’t pour from an empty pot” she reminds us.  I like that Jen is focused on being well.  Doing all the things you can before you become ill or afflicted with a health concern.  What drew me to her was the light she has in showing up on Instagram encouraging us to make positive choices that will benefit us.  Jen shares in fun, informative ways.  Whether it be simple, better food choices or simple habits we can easily incorporate into our lives.  Jen is the_healthyish_scientist.Thank you for being a part of the UY conversation. The Unabashed You website has a page for each guest of photos, quotes and a blog with embedded audio at unabashedyou.com. Pouring is an Action Word -episode 142
It was lovely to have Micah Burog back on the show.  (She was with us once before in Am I Making a Difference? Episode 61.)  As I’ve mentioned previously, my time in children’s theater was very fulfilling, working with creative, enthusiastic, and kind people like Micah was a big part of that.  I’m happy to hear she is pursuing a career in eduction.  She will thrive.  In this conversation we talked a bit about Christmas.  Then I asked what were her takeaways from 2022, and what does she see for 2023. It turns out 2021 was a tough year for Micah as it was for many of us.  Her phrase for that year was ‘intentional impact.’  For 2022 she went with ‘release and embrace’ which is a positive way to make the best out of what comes your way.   And as she shared with us the phrase she will likely carry into 2023 is ‘pouring.’  This will be pouring into others with love even if she doesn’t know them., and pouring into herself.   It’s a very valuable, and healthy choice. Making Merry with Andrew & Greg - episode 141
The goal of this episode was to make merry.  And who to help us do that but Andrew Gumm and Greg Henninger.  I hired them both as teaching artists for children’s theater back in the day, and they went to college with Shaun.  Our connections run deep.  Even if I haven’t seen or talked to them in a while, all bets are off when we connect, and it’s like no time has gone by.  I cherish them both.  To make more merry, they were quizzed on some Christmas movie quotes, and then some questions around Christmas. We actually ran out of time.  Maybe you could tell we could have kept going for many hours to come.  Hopefully you are as entertained as we clearly were. Whether we’re talking about the merits, or lack of them for My Favorite Things as a Christmas song, or whether The Twelve Days of Christmas has too many birds, we covered as much as we could. For those things we will be pondering, we’ve got our work cut out for us to look into them and then we’ll come back and share our findings.  Collaborating is fulfilling.  When you can come together and be more than you could have been on your own, it’s simply the best.  Just like these two.  Thank you for being a part of the UY conversation. The Unabashed You website has a page for each guest of photos, quotes and a blog with embedded audio at unabashedyou.com. Christmas Movies with Shaun - episode 140
It’s Christmas time.  Why not invite Shaun to a conversation about something we both like.  Christmas movies.  We randomly found a list of the top 20 of all time and went from there.  Some on the list were obvious, It’s a Wonderful Life, Love Actually, A Muppet Christmas Carol, and other more recent ones didn’t make the cut like, The Family Stone and The Holiday.   There were the earlier ones which I look on fondly, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, It’s a Charlie Brown Christmas.  Not so much for Shaun.  His nostalgia is for when he was growing up.  Makes sense.  It’s like a Venn diagram.  His, mine and the ones we both like in the middle like Daddy’s Home 2.   Then there is the newest contender, Spirited.  It’s a musical with Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds.  My bar for this was so low it was on the ground.  Not sure why, no offense to either actor.  Maybe it was it being yet another Christmas Carol adaption. Turns out it was better than I expected and I really did enjoy it.  Shaun hasn’t seen it yet but he’s added it to the list of the ones he wants to watch.  And I said I’d checkout the sequel to a Christmas Story.  Who knows, I may add another to my annual viewing list. The Heart of a Coach - episode 139
I was recently asked to have Doug Peacock on the UY show.  (He is this week’s Thankful and Giving Back guest.) I said yes as long as Doug could show up and share as opposed to pitch.  There’s a difference and it matters to me.  I think there is a way to talk about your passion without leaving the audience feeling like they’ve listened to one long ad.  Doug, known most of his life as ‘coach’ has enthusiasm and drive.  That much is evident.  First it was football, and now its infinite banking.I’m still trying to wrap my head around all the things Doug shared.  How do banks make money?  Rate of investment vs. rate of return.  Likely it will take some time to process and some conferring with those whose opinions I look up to (Ron, Dave, Kelly).  I appreciate how committed he is to this newer way of wanting to help himself and others.  He’s got the heart of a coach all right. She’s this week’s Thankful and Giving Back guest. She brings up a good point about forgiveness.  It is hard but not as hard as it is to let go.  If you don’t it will stay in your mind and take up energy.  It is far better, for you in particular, to release it.  You don’t have control of the situation other people created, but you sure have the ability not to hold on to it.  It’s not productive.  It doesn’t serve you.  Just ask Bijou.  She knows. Never Let a Swell Go By - episode 137
Many people like to surf, sky, swim, dive, along with other past-times that are done in water.  Spending time there is not without its risks.  There have been many rescues done and many have lived to tell the harrowing tale.  Of course that is not always the case.  What about their loved ones, the ones left behind?  Fallen Waterman’s Foundation was created to support the families of watermen, and women, with counseling and scholarships.  It was founded by Mark Hanley and he is today’s Thankful and Giving Back guest.“Never let a swell go by” is more than a literal surfing philosophy.  As Mark shared it is a figurative expression too.  Don’t get so bogged down in the details of your day-to-day that you miss the things that are coming your way.  They are there for you to seize, to enjoy, and to help others with.  I am grateful Mark took advantage of the swell that came his way and is now serving the fallen watermen and women.  It’s his passion, a way to give back.   Thank you for being a part of the UY conversation. The Unabashed You website has a page for each guest of photos, quotes and a blog with embedded audio at unabashedyou.com.
