33: Are You Surviving or Thriving: Rethinking Rest for Optimum Productivity
Want to know the real reason your productivity is not operating at optimum capacity? You’ll probably guess things like disorganization, procrastination, or even environment, which all have a part to play. But everything starts with rest – intentional and proactive rest. Are you making time to replenish, recharge, and reenergize your capacity or are you disregarding rest by cycling through unhealthy bouts of productivity that ultimately impact your overall health? This week, I discuss three ways to help you incorporate rest into your schedule and we’ll also learn about the concept of emotional reflexivity in the midst of a demanding schedule. In this episode, you will learn about 1. How my own rage forced me to start being more intentional about rest 2. What drives your inability to get rest 3. The unique concept of designing empty spaces Episode links: More on Emotional Reflexivity (https://www.hanifabarnes.com/blog/survive-thrive) Designing Spaces (https://time.com/6254135/doing-nothing-more-productive/) ⏰Move from busy to effective by reimagining time management at the intersection of spirit, well being, and productivity. 32: No Time to Heal: Deconstructing Grief and Toxic Productivity
Years ago, I learned of the loss of a loved one in a text message while at work, just before entering a meeting with my boss. Instead of taking my time to grieve, I inhaled all of my emotions and buried them deep enough so that I could keep working. We live in a doing society that doesn't embrace the need to heal. That is why there is so much fragmentation and strife in the day-to-day. Don't believe me...ask yourself what you did the last time you were dealing with grief or some type of trauma. Did you take the time you needed to stand in the truth of your emotion before barreling ahead with life? Probably not. Most of us don't have the luxury to go through all five stages of grief to create a path towards healing; and the time it takes to grieve depends on so many factors. Listen to episode 32 to learn more about... 1. Factors that impact how long we grieve 2. The Virginia students, who returned to schoolo just three weeks after seeing their teacher shot 3. Somedays it is exhausting to have to fight for your voice and space at work. Unfortunately, it is a common practice for disproportionately impacted professionals to defend or minimize their various intersections in the hopes of fitting in and climbing the ladder. Why? Many professionals, specifically Black females, are disaffecting to entrepreneurship or other opportunities in the hopes of finding freedom from the time suck of circumnavigating microaggressions, gaslighting and other roadblocks. Wired at bedtime and exhausted during the day? You are probably guilty of using your devices at bedtime. Don't worry, you are in good company. 90% of Americans are using a technology device before bed and feeling the effects of the blue light. Your device is emitting a blue light that can ultimately impact your sleep cycle, daily productivity, and cognitive functioning. We’ve become so accustomed to technology that it is no longer just a support in our day-to-day work. It has become a fixture of our existence and identity. How many times have you experienced FOMO from missing a post from your favorite leadership or mindset guru? The best way to combat the blue light effect from your cellphone or other device is to stop use at least 30-minutes before bed. If that's a challenge, don't worry. With the right strategy, you can learn to reserve your energy. This week’s episode of the podcast, I delve into... 29: Facial Recognition Technology and Time Tracking...Too Much?
Why are we so obsessed with tracking productivity? Since the industrial revolution, we’ve been tracking time through electronic time clocks, spreadsheets, mobile apps and more. But what signal are we sending to employees when it comes to implementing biometric time tracking systems like facial recognition? Are we really anymore productive with more technological oversight? While you can make a good case for facial recognition software to thwart labor fraud, you can also argue that this crosses a line of privacy and social trust. In this episode, we get into... 1. 28: The Post-Pandemic Rise of Productivity Paranoia
I am former control freak. Dishes and groceries, projects and meetings...all had to be done the way I envisioned or else. Though I never considered myself a micromanager, I probably was more paranoid about other's ability to produce based on my wishes. As a young leader, I had a lot to learn about building trust and strengthening my emotional quotient to support my team's success and productivity. 20 years in, I've been able to shift my mindset and save a lot of time using targeted strategies to empower my team and create the space for success. The pandemic, however, has shifted the playing field for many leaders. What once was an environment filled with regular in-person teams is now a ghost town of intermittent attendance, as many companies struggle to "get back to normal" in hybrid and remote environments. The real question is do you really believe that your team is as productive as they purport? 88% of managers don't believe that employees are telling the truth. 27: Get Out of the Rut and Back Into Your Routine
The one thing I hate about the holidays or any break is the disruption in my routine. You can't get away from it, however. What has helped is that I’ve learned that the brain strives for predictability to limit the time it takes to think. Your brain loves to make everything a routine! And getting back into a routine can be difficult for your brain and hard on your time. This week's episode discusses five key pieces to get your routine back on track. It all begins with your baseline behaviors. Once that is set, you can master your mind and time for any routine. Check out the episode to learn... 1. Why brains turn everything into a routine 2. "Problems are emblematic of what is within." Without the right inputs, your outputs around time management will never work effectively. So often, time management is taught through one-off strategies without any consideration for the external and internal factors that play a huge part in the process. In this episode, I discuss the importance of having a time management system. A particular focus is on the A-framework, which I created in my own quest for true management of my time. What I learned is that managing time requires that I first manage my mind. Listen to this powerful episode to learn... 1. The neccessity of making a radical shift in your time strategy 2. 23: Now or Never: Using Time Wisely in the Pivot Point
“And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.” One of my favorite lines from The Alchemist is a guiding mantra during my life pivots. Have you ever felt like you've come to a point where you must make a decision between comfort and discomfort for the sake of a dream? * It may be leaving a job to pursue a theatre career. * Using your life savings to launch a nonprofit. * Resigning from community obligations to respond to your calling. We all experience pivots in life. The question is what are you going to do about it. The best thing to do is to have a strategy to help you move forward in progress and not in busyness. Listen to this week's episode to learn more about... 1. Why the movie Love and Basketball caused me to quit my job 2. The power of your Reticular Activating System (RAS) in making your dreams a reality 3. 22: How Tragedy Shapes Time Management
Tragedy is inevitable. Time is unmanageable. But we often let ourselves believe that time can be managed and realize after tragedy that we should do more to manage our purpose and choices in the time that we have. No matter the tragedy or level trauma, you can't help but feel as if you are suspended between the past and future in an unbearable present moment. It's what you do in that moment that matters most. Richard Norton, author of Anti-Time Management: Reclaim Your Time and Revolutionize Your Results with the Power of Time Tipping, used tragedy as a catalyst to shift his perspective on time through the concept of time tipping. In his approach, Norton highlights the importance of having a north star that is defined by four Ps. This is how you can go from attempting to manage what you can't control (time) to thoughtfully and intentionally managing what you can control - purpose. Listen to this episode to learn more about... 1. The impact of tragedy and trauma on your time perpsective 2. The concept of time tipping 3. 21: When Done is Better Than Perfect
Why can’t he just get the groceries right? That was the narrative I had in my head early in my marriage when I didn’t trust my husband to go to the grocery store on his own. My issue was the need to be in control of every aspect of my life because I was a staunch perfectionist. It started early for me...and probably for you. Who hasn’t wasted time in the pursuit of a perfect moment or experience? Many well-known individuals have professed to their own forms of perfectionism only to recant and express that it wasn’t worth it – Serena Williams, Martha Stewart, Steve Jobs. In fact, Jobs called perfectionism your worst enemy. In this episode, you will hear... 1. Four ways to quell perfectionist tendencies 2. Why perfectionists are prone to procrastination 3. How Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can minimize the desire for perfection Episode links: Read the full Blogcast article (https://www.hanifabarnes.com/blog/done-perfect) for more details on how to know when done is better than perfect. Season 2 Top 5 Rewind: Five Ways to Maximize Deep Focus for Productivity
I was absolutely amazed at my ability to produce 80,000 words of a novel in a matter of months. There was no magic bullet or guru imparting writing strategy. I made the decision that each day I would engage in a routine that would open my brain and spark my creativity. This is deep focus. It is about taking a set period of time to free yourself from the never ending distractions and interruptions to allow yourself a moment of stillness and recovery. It is in these moments that creativity, innovation and productivity abound. For years, I've worked to incorporate this regimented approach to deep focus as a business owner and 9 to 5er. I must say that some of my greatest successes have come as revelations during those moments of deep focus. This episode highlights five ways to get into deep focus so that you can experience deliberate productivity. In this episode, you will hear... 1. Why deep focus is an art and not a science 2. How time fragments lower productivity 3. Five strategies to engage in deep focus Episode links: 1. Season 2 Top 5 Rewind: How To Do It All in 4000 Weeks?
The year was 2008 - I had given birth one year prior to our fourth child, was working full time, and re-enrolling in law school at night. Life was about to get real, and all I could think about was how good it felt for others to marvel at my ability to do it all. Behind the superhuman smile, there was brokenness, frustration, regret, and so many emotions and symptoms, as a result of my desire to maintain my persona. Eventually, I came crashing down and realized that I had too much on my plate; but it was too late. I was stuck in the rut of doing, going, and existing that I forgot all about what doing it all for me looked and felt like. It took years after law school graduation for me to get to a place where I didn't need other people to praise me for doing it all. Instead, I started doing it all based on what I wanted for me. Who really wants to waste their 4000 weeks, anyway? In this episode, you will learn the three strategies to doing it all when you feel that you are doing too much... 1. Being busy doesn't mean you're being effective 2. Don't underestimate time to completion 3. Limit procrastination Episode links 1. Season 2 Top 5 Rewind: Is Quiet Quitting the Antidote to Hustle Culture?
Did you know that 768 million vacation days go unused each year? Of those, 236 million are forfeited. People are working more in their businesses and on the job under the guise of hustle culture to the detriment of their wellbeing. Honestly, I get caught up in the rise and grind mentality myself. But in 2009, I had to take a moment and quiet quit to take care of my children years ago. I was laid off in 2010. After years of building my career, it suddenly halted because I chose not to work beyond the time boundaries of my job. Corporate culture has it all wrong. Quiet quitting is NOT a form of quitting or checking out, and it is not an affront to productivity. IT IS radical time management, prioritization, boundary setting, and self-preservation. Listen to the episode to learn about... 1. Where the phrase came from 2. How HR managers want to counter the practice 3. Why it is the antidote to the toxicity of hustle culture Episode links: 1.
