कुबेर को धन-संपत्ति के देवता के रूप में सभी जानते हैं, परन्तु उनके पूर्व जन्मों की कथा बहुत कम लोगों को पता होगी। शिव पुराण के इस प्रसंग में सुनिए किस प्रकार मंदिर में चोरी करने वाले एक चोर ने, जाने-अनजाने किये गए अपने कर्मों के कारण कुबेर के पद को प्राप्त करने के साथ-साथ भगवान शंकर के समीप स्थान भी प्राप्त किया। काम्पिल्य नगर में यज्ञदत्त नाम का एक ब्राह्मण रहता था। उनके एक पुत्र हुआ जिसका नाम गुणनिधि था। गुणनिधि अपने नाम के विपरीत बहुत ही दुराचारी और उद्दंड था। उसकी इन्ही हरकतों से परेशान होकर यज्ञदत्त ने उसे त्याग दिया। घर से निकलने के बाद वह कई दिनों तक भूखा भटकता रहा। एक दिन मंदिर से चढ़ावा चुराने के उद्देश्य से वह शिव मंदिर में गया। उसने वहाँ अपने कपड़ों को जलाकर उजाला किया; मानो भगवान शंकर को दीप दान कर रहा हो। उसको चोरी के अपराध में पकड़ा गया और मृत्युदंड दिया गया। अपने बुरे कर्मों के कारण उसे यमदूतों ने बांध लिया; लेकिन शिव के गणों ने वहाँ आकर उसे छुड़ा लिया। भगवान शंकर के गणों के साथ रहकर उसका मन शुद्ध हुआ। अंत में वह उन्हीं शिवगणों के साथ शिवलोक चला गया। वहाँ सारे दिव्य भोगों का उपभोग करके उमा-महेश्वर की सेवा करने से पुनर्जन्म में वह कलिंगराज अरिंदम का पुत्र बना। कलिंगराज ने अपने पुत्र का नाम दम रखा। वह हमेशा शिव की आराधना में लगा रहता था और बालक होने पर भी वह दूसरे बालकों के साथ शिव का भजन किया करता था। युवा अवस्था को प्राप्त होने और पिता के स्वर्गवास के बाद वह कलिंग के सिंहासन पर विराजमान हुआ। राजा दम बड़ी प्रसन्नता के साथ सभी दिशाओं में शिव का प्रचार करने लगे। उन्होंने अपने राज्य के सभी ग्रामों के शिव मंदिरों में दीपदान की प्रथा का प्रचलन किया। उन्होंने सभी ग्राम प्रधानों को निर्देश दिया की उनके गाँव के आस-पास जितने भी शिवालय हों वहाँ बिना किसी सोच-विचार के सदा दीप जलाना चाहिए। आजीवन इसी धर्म का पालन करने के कारण राजा दम ने बहुत सारी धर्म संपत्ति अर्जित की और मृत्यु के पश्चात् अलकापुरी के स्वामी हुए। ब्रह्मा के मानस पुत्र पुलस्त्य से विश्रवा का जन्म हुआ और विश्रवा के पुत्र वैश्रवण (कुबेर) हुए। उन्होंने पूर्व जन्म में महादेव की आराधना करके विश्वकर्मा के द्वारा निर्मित इस अलकापुरी का उपभोग किया। जब वह कल्प व्यतीत हुआ और मेघवाहन कल्प आरम्भ हुआ, उस समय वह यज्ञदत्त का पुत्र, जो प्रकाश का दान करने वाला था, कुबेर के रूप में अत्यंत कठिन तपस्या करने लगा। दीपदान मात्र से मिलने वाले शिव के प्रभाव को जानकर वह शिव की नगरी काशी गया और वहाँ ग्यारह रुद्रों का ध्यान करके अनन्य भक्ति और स्नेह के साथ तन्मयता से शिव के ध्यान में मग्न होकर निश्छल भाव से बैठ गया। वर्षों तक ऐसे तपस्या करने के बाद वहाँ भगवान शिव स्वयं देवी पार्वती के साथ प्रकट हुए। भगवान शिव ने प्रसन्न मन से अलकापति कुबेर को देखा और कहा,"अलकापति! मैं तुम्हारे तप से प्रसन्न हूँ और तुम्हें वर देने को तैयार हूँ। तुम अपनी मनोकामना बताओ।"  यह वाणी सुनकर कुबेर ने जैसे ही अपनी आँखें खोलकर देखा, उनको भगवान शिव सामने खड़े दिखाई दिये। वह प्रातःकाल के सूर्य जैसे हज़ारों सूर्यों से भी ज्यादा तेजवान थे और चन्द्रमा उनके मस्तक पर चाँदनी बिखेर रहे थे। भगवान शंकर के ऐसे तेज से कुबेर के आँखें बंद हो गयीं। कुबेर अपने नेत्र बंद कर अपने मन में विराजमान भगवान शिव से बोले,"नाथ! मेरे नेत्रों को वह दिव्यदृष्टि दीजिये जिससे मैं आपके दर्शन कर सकूँ। आपके प्रत्यक्ष दर्शन कर सकूँ यही मेरे लिए सबसे बड़ा वर है। मुझे दूसरा कोई वर नहीं चाहिए।"  कुबेर की यह बात सुनकर उमापति ने अपनी हथेली से उनका मस्तक छूकर उन्हें देखने की शक्ति प्रदान की। दृष्टि की शक्ति मिल जाने पर यज्ञदत्त के उस पुत्र ने आँखें खोली और उनकी नजर देवी पार्वती पर पड़ी। देवी को देखकर वह मन ही मन सोचने लगा,"भगवान के समीप यह सर्वसुन्दरी कौन हैं? इन्होंने ऐसा कौन सा तप किया है, जो मेरी तपस्या से भी बड़ा है। यह रूप, यह प्रेम, यह सौभाग्य और यह असीम शोभा-सब कितना अद्भुत है।"  वह ब्राह्मणकुमार बार-बार यही कहकर देवी की तरह घूर-घूरकर देखने लगा। इस प्रकार वामा के अवलोकन से उसकी बायीं आँख फूट गयीं। इस पर देवी पार्वती ने महादेव से कहा,"प्रभु! यह दुष्ट तपस्वी बार-बार मेरी तरफ देखकर क्या बकवास कर रहा है?" देवी की यह बात सुनकर भगवान शिव ने हँसते हुए कहा,"उमा! यह तुम्हारा पुत्र है और तुम्हें दुष्ट दृष्टि से नहीं देख रहा है, अपितु तुम्हारी अपार तपःसंपत्ति का वर्णन कर रहा है।" देवी से ऐसा कहकर भगवान शिव कुबेर से बोले,"वत्स! मैं तुम्हारे तप से प्रसन्न होकर तुम्हें वर देता हूँ। तुम निधियों के स्वामी और यक्ष, किन्नरों और राजाओं के भी राजा होकर पुण्यजनों के पालक और सबके लिये धन के दाता बनो। मेरे साथ तुम्हारी मैत्री सदा बनी रहेगी और मैं नित्य ही तुम्हारे निकट निवास करूँगा। मित्र! तुम्हारा स्नेह बढ़ाने के लिये मैं अलकापुरी के पास ही रहूँगा। आओ, इन उमादेवी के चरणों में प्रणाम करो, क्योंकि ये तुम्हारी माता हैं। महाभक्त यज्ञदत्त-कुमार! तुम अत्यंत प्रसन्नचित्त होकर इनके चरणों में गिर जाओ।" इस प्रकार वर देकर भगवान शिव ने पार्वती से कहा,"देवेश्वरी! इस पर कृपा करो। तपस्विनी! यह कुबेर तुम्हारा पुत्र है।" भगवान शंकर का यह कथन सुनकर जगदम्बा पार्वती ने प्रसन्नचित्त होकर यज्ञदत्तकुमार से कहा,"वत्स! भगवान शिव में तुम्हारी निर्मल भक्ति सदैव बनी रहे। महादेवजी ने तुम्हें जो वर दिये हैं, वे सब उसी रूप में तुम्हें सुलभ हों। मेरे रूप के प्रति ईर्ष्या करने के कारण तुम कुबेर नाम से प्रसिद्द होंगे।" इस प्रकार कुबेर को वर देकर भगवान महेश्वर पार्वती के साथ अपने धाम चले गये। इस प्रकार कुबेर ने भगवान शंकर की मैत्री प्राप्त की और कैलाश पर्वत के पास अलकापुरी उनका निवास स्थान बना।   Story of Kuber’s Past Births   We all know Kuber as the God of wealth but only few are aware of his past births and the deeds he did that gave him a home close to Mahadeva. This story from Shiva Purana brings light to that and tells us about how deeds of past life made Kuber dear to Bhagwaan Shankar.   In the city of Kampilya Nagar lived a brahmin named Yagya Dutt who had a son named Gunanidhi. But the son of Brahmin always behaved contrary to his name and was very vicious and defiant. Yagya Dutt was very disheartened as he failed to discipline him and finally he abandoned him. After leaving the house, Gunanidhi wandered hungry for several days. One day he went to the Shiva temple with the intention of stealing the offerings given to Mahadeva. There he burnt his clothes to get some respite from the dark and cold, this was akin to lighting a lamp in the name of Mahadev. While he was busy satisfying his hunger, he was caught off guard by the people and was sentenced to death for theft.   Because of his bad deeds, agents of Yamaraj had come to take him with them; however because of lighting a lamp in the name of Mahadev before his death, Shiva's ganas came and rescued him from Yama’s agents and took him with them to Shiva’s abode. By staying with Bhagwan Shankar's ganas, Gunanidhi’s mind was purified and he became a staunch devotee of Shiva-Parvati.    He started serving Uma-Maheshwar and found devine pleasure in doing so and it is because of these services, he was reborn as the son of Kalingaraja Arindam in his next birth. Kalingaraja named his son Dam and he was always engaged in the worship of Shiva. Even when Prince Dam was a child, he used to worship Shiva along with other children and was crowned the king in his youth after the death of his father.   King Dam started preaching about Shiva everywhere in his kingdom with great pleasure. He started the practice of light offering in all Shiva temples of all the villages in his kingdom. He instructed all the village heads to light a lamp in all the temples in and around the villages without any hesitation. Due to following this practice for life, Raja Dam acquired a lot of good karma and after his death became the owner of Alkapuri.   From Brahma, was born Pulastya who fathered Vishrava and Vishrava had a son named Vaishravana (Kuber). Kuber in his previous birth had become the owner of Alkapuri and when the period of Meghavahana began, at that time the son of Yagya Dutta, who offered the light to Mahadev was now born as Kuber. He started performing intense penance to Maheshwar. He went to Kashi, the city of Shiva, and after meditating on the eleven Rudras and with unparalleled devotion and affection, he sat calmly in the meditation of Shiva.   After performing penance for years, Bhagwan Shiva himself appeared there along with Devi Parvati. Bhagwan Shiva looked at Alkapati Kuber with a happy heart and said, "Alkapati! I am pleased with your tenacity and am ready to give you a boon. Tell me your wish."   Hearing this voice, as soon as Kuber opened his eyes, he saw Bhagwan Shiva standing in front of him who was illuminating like a thousand suns, and the moon was shining on his forehead. Kuber could not see Maheshwar due to the shining brilliance that was radiating from Bhagwan Shankar. Kuber closed his eyes and said to Bhagwan Shiva whose image was always in his mind, "Nath! Give my eyes that divine vision so that I can see you. To see you in front of me with my eyes open will be the biggest boon for me. I don't want any other boon."    Hearing this from Kuber, Umapati touched his head with his palm and gave him the power to see him. On getting the vision, son of Yagya Dutt opened his eyes and his eyes fell on Mata Parvati. Seeing Her, he started thinking in his mind, "Who is this beautiful lady near Mahadev? What kind of austerity has she performed, which is greater than my penance. This form, this love, this good fortune and this infinite splendor; all this is amazing.”   Brahmin Kumar said this again and again and started staring at the goddess and was blinded in his left eye for staring at Vama. Devi Parvati said to Mahadev, "Bhagwan! What nonsense is this ascetic murmuring and why is he staring at me?"    Hearing this, Bhagwan Shiva laughed and said, "Uma! This is our son and he is not looking at you with evil eyes, but is describing your immense austerity." Saying this to the goddess, Bhagwan Shiva said to Kuber, "Vats! I am pleased with your tenacity and give you a boon. You shall be the God of wealth and the king of Gandharvas and Kinnars. You will be the guardian of the virtuous and the giver of wealth to all. This bond of companionship between you and me will stay forever and I will always live near you. My friend! I will stay near Alkapuri to strengthen this bond. Come, bow down at the feet of Umadevi, your mother. Mahabhakta Yagya Dutt-Kumar! Be immensely happy and bow down at her feet ."   Thus giving the boon, Bhagwan Shiva said to Parvati, "Deveshwari! Have mercy on him. Tapaswini! Kuber is our son." On hearing this statement of Bhagwan Shankar, Jagadamba Parvati said to Yagya Dutt Kumar, "Vats! May your pure devotion to Bhagwan Shiva always remain. May all the blessings that Mahadevji has given you be utilised by you in that form. And because of your jealousy towards my form, you will be known by the name Kuber." Thus giving a boon to Kuber, Bhagwan Maheshwar went to his abode with Parvati.    In this way Kuber gained the friendship of Bhagwan Shankar and Mount Kailash near Alkapuri became his abode.
