कुरुक्षेत्र का युद्ध जीतने के बाद, युधिष्ठिर हस्तिनापुर के राजा बने और उन्होंने अश्वमेध यज्ञ करने का फ़ैसला किया। यज्ञ अविस्मर्णीय और अत्यन्त ही विशाल पैमाने पर हुआ जिसकी महिमा चारों ओर फैली हुई थी। यज्ञ वैदिक अनुष्ठानों के अनुसार विद्वान ब्राह्मणों के मार्गदर्शन में किया गया और दान भी उस पैमाने पर दिया गया जो दुनिया ने कभी नहीं देखा था।   यज्ञ के अन्त में एक नेवला वहाँ आया। उसके शरीर का आधा हिस्सा सुनहरा था, जबकि बाकी आधा भूरा था। नेवला वहाँ आते ही फर्श पर लुढ़कने लगा और फिर ज़ोर-ज़ोर से शोर करने लगा। उसने वहाँ उपस्थित सभी ब्राह्मणों का ध्यान अपनी ओर आकर्षित किया और साथ ही उसने मानवीय स्वर में बात की। नेवले ने कहा, "धर्मराज! यह सब दान ग़रीब ब्राह्मण द्वारा दान किए गए एक किलो सत्तू की तुलना में कुछ भी नहीं है।”   नेवले की बात सुनकर यज्ञ में मौजूद सभी लोग स्तब्ध रह गए। वहाँ उपस्थित ब्राह्मणों ने नेवले को सम्बोधित करते हुए कहा, “यहाँ आकर इस तरह के साहसिक वक्तव्य देने वाले आप कौन होते हैं ? आप अवश्य ही एक दिव्य प्राणी दिखाई पड़ते हैं । हम सब आपकी बात सुन रहें है कृपया हमें बताएँ कि आप क्या कहना चाहते हैं।”  The Golden Mongoose After winning the war of Kurukshetra, Yudhishthira became the king of Hastinapur and decided to perform Ashwamedha Yagya. The yagya was done at a scale unseen to everyone in their living memory and the praises of it spread all across. The Yagya was performed as per Vedic Rituals under the guidance of learned Brahmins and donations were given at a scale the world has not witnessed.  Towards the end of that yagya a mongoose visited the place. One half of his body was golden, while the remaining half was brown. The mongoose came there and started rolling on the floor then made a loud noise. When all the Brahmins present there had his attention he spoke in a human voice. The mongoose said, “Dharmaraj! All this charity is nothing compared to one kilo sattu donated by the poor Brahmin.”  Everyone present there was stunned at this proclamation. The Brahmins present there addressed the mongoose, “who are you to come here and make such bold statements? You seem like a divine being. Please tell us what you want to say. You have our attention.”
