EP:304 | Spring Longbeards with Dave Owens of The Pinhoti Project
Feb 4 2025
EP:304 | Spring Longbeards with Dave Owens of The Pinhoti Project
This week we are joined by one of our favorite guests, Dave Owens of the Pinhoti Project.  Dave is a renowned traveling turkey hunter who obsesses over the details and is one of our favorite guests. We decided to ask him questions that he rarely gets asked in an effort to learn something new. How does he prepare for weeks of reduced sleep? He explains his filming set up to help listeners film their own hunts, we talk woodsmanship skills and how they paint a picture of what’s occurring, how he keeps up with the many different turkeys he is aware of, how environmental factors affect the sound of a gobble, how he anticipates what’s going to happen—allowing him to prepare—and how there is something therapeutic about the spring woods. It’s a good one. Listen, Learn and Enjoy.           Show Notes:Pinhoti Project: https://pinhotiproject.com/Send a text message to the show!Enter the Gamekeeper Avid Boat Giveaway at mossyoakgamekeeper.com/giveaway/  Support the showStay connected with GameKeepers: Instagram: @mossyoakgamekeepers Facebook: @GameKeepers Twitter: @MOGameKeepers YouTube: @MossyOakGameKeepers Website: https://mossyoakgamekeeper.com/ Enter The Gamekeeper Giveaway: https://bit.ly/GK_Giveaway Subscribe to Gamekeepers Magazine: https://bit.ly/GK_Magazine Buy a Single Issue of Gamekeepers Magazine: https://bit.ly/GK_Single_Issue Join our Newsletters: Field Notes - https://bit.ly/GKField_Notes | The Branch - https://bit.ly/the_branch Have a question for us or a podcast idea? EP:301 | (Timely Classic EP:138) So You Think You Know Coyotes?
Jan 24 2025
EP:301 | (Timely Classic EP:138) So You Think You Know Coyotes?
On this timely classic episode (EP:190) we are honored to have Dr. Dana Morin, an Applied Population Ecologist with the Carnivore and Population Ecology Lab at the Forest and Wildlife Research Center at Mississippi State, sitting between the turkeys and explaining many facts about coyotes. We learn they are a fascinating animal, very much deserving of our respect even though we still seem to want to trap or shoot each one we see. They weren’t always in the Eastern half of the U.S., yet have you ever wondered how they got here? Why do they howl? Just how smart are they? If you trap one how long does it take another to fill the void? How large are their territories?  Her vast amount of research into their habits and habitat allow her to provide us some serious insight. We learn it all and more. Listen, Learn and Enjoy!          Show Notes:Big thanks to Dr. Dana Morin with the MSU Carnivore and Population Ecology Lab Send a text message to the show!Enter the Gamekeeper Avid Boat Giveaway at mossyoakgamekeeper.com/giveaway/  Support the showStay connected with GameKeepers: Instagram: @mossyoakgamekeepers Facebook: @GameKeepers Twitter: @MOGameKeepers YouTube: @MossyOakGameKeepers Website: https://mossyoakgamekeeper.com/ Enter The Gamekeeper Giveaway: https://bit.ly/GK_Giveaway Subscribe to Gamekeepers Magazine: https://bit.ly/GK_Magazine Buy a Single Issue of Gamekeepers Magazine: https://bit.ly/GK_Single_Issue Join our Newsletters: Field Notes - https://bit.ly/GKField_Notes | The Branch - https://bit.ly/the_branch Have a question for us or a podcast idea? EP:299 | (Timely Classic EP:190) Blood Trailing Deer Dogs
Jan 17 2025
EP:299 | (Timely Classic EP:190) Blood Trailing Deer Dogs
On this timely classic episode (EP:190) we are joined in studio by deer dog recovery expert Zach Crowley and his legendary tracking dog, Dayah (a beautiful black-mouthed Cur). We hope you never need one, but if you do it’s great to know there is a network of recovery dogs that can make the difference in recovering your deer. Zach explains what steps to take after a nominal shot, and how to get in touch with a blood trailing dog owner in your area. We also talk about how you can typically expect a wounded whitetail to behave, and the basics of how to train your own recovery dog. Dayah doesn’t say much, but Zach is a wealth of “been there done that” information. If you hunt whitetails…you’ll pick up something useful. EP:294 | How Hunting Pressure Affects Waterfowl Movement
Dec 31 2024
EP:294 | How Hunting Pressure Affects Waterfowl Movement
This week, we’re talking ducks with Dr. Brad Cohen from Tennessee Tech and expert duck hunter Jim Ronquest (Drake Waterfowl.) Brad is a very interesting biologist who wants to learn about how hunting pressure affects waterfowl movements, and his study will amaze you. His group is banding ducks with GPS monitors and studying how pressure makes the ducks move, where they want to go and how long they stay. Jim Ronquest many years of duck hunting experience gives him a great perspective on the study’s findings. Where are the ducks? Why don’t we see as many as we think we should? How much pressure can they take? This is an interesting discussion. EP:287 | Bonus: Chief Cyrus Ben
Dec 6 2024
EP:287 | Bonus: Chief Cyrus Ben
This week, we are joined by Chief Cyrus Ben of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. We ask him a lot of questions, ranging from artifacts to the cultural importance of hunting to his people. We ask him to take us back hundreds of years and explain how things were done and what the landscape looked like. The Chief was a great guest, an eloquent speaker, and knowledgeable about everything from hunting to managing their extensive business interests. He cares deeply about his people, their historic past, and, of course, their future. His passion for life is quickly evident, and he felt like an old friend. We learned about hunting rabbits with short, throwable hickory clubs called rabbit sticks, and the Chief told the story of his first deer and a recent bull elk. He also explained how they manage wildlife and set seasons on the 36,000 acres under their control. This is a good one. Listen, Learn and Enjoy.  Show Notes:Mississippi Choctaw: https://www.choctaw.org/Send a text message to the show!Enter the Gamekeeper Avid Boat Giveaway at mossyoakgamekeeper.com/giveaway/  Support the showStay connected with GameKeepers: Instagram: @mossyoakgamekeepers Facebook: @GameKeepers Twitter: @MOGameKeepers YouTube: @MossyOakGameKeepers Website: https://mossyoakgamekeeper.com/ Enter The Gamekeeper Giveaway: https://bit.ly/GK_Giveaway Subscribe to Gamekeepers Magazine: https://bit.ly/GK_Magazine Buy a Single Issue of Gamekeepers Magazine: https://bit.ly/GK_Single_Issue Join our Newsletters: Field Notes - https://bit.ly/GKField_Notes | The Branch - https://bit.ly/the_branch Have a question for us or a podcast idea?
