When we understand the context, the words of the 89th Psalm are more impactful. It is a Psalm of maskil - intended for instruction, and this type of Psalm was told and retold as a teaching method. Psalm 89 was written by Ethan, a wise man on par with Solomon. Ethan was a singer in the temple who lived long enough to observe the change in leadership between David and Soloman and how the inclusion of different thinking would result in the destruction of Israel.
Amid this darkness, the writer begins with “this is my forever song” and describes God's greatness, faithfulness, and mercies. Ethan’s song in his time of darkness was a song of faith in a time of fear. Amid all the doom and gloom of our current situation, we must turn to faith and look to God for direction and deliverance. God is the author of our future, not our present circumstances.
