Sleep

Sleep
Are you someone that values your sleep? Or are you a parent who day dreams about nights that you 'slept through' or had a 'lie in'?! Whichever you count yourself as - alcohol will be playing a role in affecting your sleep. No matter how much or how little you drink... In fact, not only will alcohol affect the quality of your sleep - it also plays an integral role to your sobriety and your avoidance of a relapse. If you ask 1000 newly sober people what benefits they have felt in the early days of giving up the grog - we would guess that almost all of them would mention better sleep! In today's episode Hame and Vic take a deeper look into the science of sleep and its importance to our mental and physical health. We certainly aren't scientists but we can confirm we are far nicer people to be around after a good nights sleep. We do not miss the room spinning, the loo seat naps or the 3am wake ups feeling wide awake and unable to get back down. We also binge on a lot less chocolate and a little less Netflix when we aren't feeling exhausted and hungover. (We promise that this will not be as boring as most of the conversations two parents have about sleep! Although we have had many conversations like this dull enough to put us to sleep so ... silver linings and all that!) Enjoy the episode! The Soberversary
12-03-2023
The Soberversary
It's Vic's special day! 5 years since she gave up the grog and it's taken her all that time to learn how to best celebrate sobriety milestones. Today Vic and Hamish discuss plans for their sober birthdays, talk way too much about turnips and uncover why 'going large' on your soberversary can leave you and your piggy back a little disappointed and ensure your soberversary goes off with less of a bang... and more of a quiet high five with someone that cares. Vic also reflects on the past 5 years and Hamish shares those all important dates from his sober app (and probably too much information about Ed Sheeran's foot). Anyway.....whether you are about to celebrate 30 days, 100 days, or the big 1 year - this episode will give you food for thought. A hot air balloon ride perhaps? A long walk? a dinner out? or a very expensive massage from an aggressive lady? It's up to you. Come and feel the sober birthday awkward and do it anyway! The University Years

The University Years
Living out of home for the first time...No rules...Hardly any lectures...And a heap of borrowed cash? Sounds like the ingredients for a good time right?! Although for some the University years are when you discover what it truly is you want to do with your life. You work hard, get good grades and kickstart your careers from there. For Hame and Vic (amongst many others!) - this was not the case. These can be heavy drinking years. Years when drinking for a bit of 'fun' - soon turns into an uncontrollable habit. Universities seemed to be designed for exactly this reason! Over the course of today's episode Hame and Vic will take a look behind why we drank to excess at Uni, what the dangers are and why students today are inspiring them to better themselves! Stepping out of the Comfort Zone
We know it's very cosy within the safe confines of home with your tea, chocolate biscuits and Netflix..... So, why leave? Today Vic and Hamish find out why it's essential to tip toe out of that very appealing comfort zone when you go sober, share some things they have been afraid of in the past and find a process to use to help get over their irrational worry and really feel the fear and do it anyway. They hope that by the end of today’s episode you will decide to try something new, replace the booze with an activity or task that you have never done before.  They want you to face your fears and understand that by doing so, your sober life will be so much more rewarding than your wonky drunky one! Grief
19-02-2023
Grief
Grief and alcohol have sadly been intrinsically linked for as long as we can remember. It has somehow become as commonplace to get drunk at a funeral as it is at a wedding!? Losing somebody you love can be one of the toughest things you can go through in your life. As a result, many sadly turn to the bottle. It might cost you your sobriety or it might be the trigger that begins an unhealthy relationship with alcohol altogether. Here's the news flash though - alcohol will not help 'take the edge off' your grief. Grief is too big, too all encompassing for alcohol to 'fix'. In fact, it will only lengthen the painful process. Grief must be experienced sober in order to be fully processed. We aren't saying it's easy. And we certainly aren't judging anyone that over drinks during a traumatic period of their life. Vic and Hamish are instead here to try and learn lessons from those who have experienced grief more than them. We share some of the tips and tricks we have picked up along the way. And Hamish takes a look at how we might improve our skills in helping others through their grief so they never feel the need to resort to drinking. The People Pleaser
12-02-2023
The People Pleaser
Did you drink to fit in? Is this because you wanted people to like you? Does it matter? After a few months of getting sober the true you begins to sneak out from under that big safe layer of booze. You begin to question yourself and seek answers as to why you act in the way you do. It's confronting, and very exciting. Finding authenticity and letting go of being a people pleaser are both part of this process. In this vulnerable episode of Sober Awkward, Vic reveals some of her more extreme people pleasing ways and why she feels being overly friendly can leave her swimming in a mucky pond of disappointment. Whereas Hamish thinks people pleasing is a form of good manners, a need to be kind to others and fit in to society, Either way, both Vic and Hame see that some of there intricate personality traits often mean they end up missing out on time with thier families. They are way too reliable, can never say no, or are too busy buying gifts for random strangers. So today, they are both learning on the go, trying to understand their people pleasery and step in to a world in which they no longer care what anyone thinks about them. Sound awkward? Yes! but with a few awful stories, some chat about socks and a barrel of giggles, anything is possible! A Lesson in Drinking

A Lesson in Drinking
You learnt the periodic table, you can tell me what year the Battle of Hastings was and you think you are right in saying that a pentagon has 5 sides…but what did you learn at school about alcohol? Probably nothing at all! Is there anything else in our lives that we spend as much time, money and energy on but know so little about? In this episode, Vic and Hamish are re-entering the classroom to take a look at exactly how they would like alcohol to be taught as a subject in schools. They will cover its origins, its uses over the years, its scientific effect on the brain, its marketing and finally its place in society (with one or two of their own embarrassing tales thrown in for good measure!). You will also learn what Hamish has called ‘the weirdest thing Vic has ever shared on the podcast - all will be revealed in this episode of Sober Awkward! So, take a seat, stop passing notes around the class and get your pens out. It is time for a lesson in drinking! Talking to Teens About Booze

Talking to Teens About Booze
How much should we tell our teenagers about alcohol. Do you blurt out everything? Be honest about all your past misdemeanours and unruly behaviour or do lie, pretend none of it happened and hope for the best? Today in this funny and uplifting episode, Vic and Hamish follow on from the parenting chat to take a look into how to talk to teens about drinking and how to get your kids to trust you before alcohol comes on the scene. They cover the importance of keeping open the lines of communication and owning your own past so they understand your reasons for no longer drinking. They hope you will finish the podcast with a spring in your step because you....(and Vic) have a plan! A way to make sure your kids know the dangers of alcohol and are able to make clear and conscious choices about it as they grow more independent. Labels
Sticks and stones may break my bones. But words shall never hurt me...until they do! We have all been labelled throughout our lives. Labelled in our childhoods, labelled in our drinking years and now - most probably - labelled in our sobriety. In this week's episode, Hamish and Vic, take a look at where labels originated in our society. Why not all labels are necessarily bad and how you can use them to your advantage. Ultimately, we should we aiming for a place where what people say or think of us doesn't affect us. But given that is a pretty tough place to reach - now is the time to educate ourselves on the role that labels can play in our sobriety. Bonus Episode! - Cravings with William Porter
What is a craving? Can sober people ever look forward to a time when no longer get them? And is it really possible to enjoy Christmas Day without booze playing on your mind? Today Vic and Hamish talk to William Porter. William is the Author of the amazing book ‘Alcohol Explained’ and last time Vic chatted to him on Sober Awkward  he broke down ‘the day in the life of the over drinker.’ which was one of thier most popular episodes. In this special Christmas Eve episode they want to go deeper…and dig into cravings. In this thought provoking show, William explains why mindset is so important in sobriety and how drinkers create a fantasy about that first drink. William explains the process of craving in such detail in this episode that after this motivating chat you will head into Xmas day thinking drinking is a total waste of time and headspace! Note -There were some technical difficulties when connecting with William. After the Game
Whether you are joining a sporting team or simply wanting to watch a game with friends - alcohol and sport appear to be intrinsically linked. Why is this the case when sport is about elite athletic performance? Drinking is the antithesis of this. Trust us! (Have you ever tried to compete in a sack race after one too many? Two words come to mind. Face. Plant. In this week's episode Vic and Hamish roll back the wheels of time to take a look at when this all began. They explore the dangers of this not only to our health but to our inclusivity as a society and they take a look at some of the sober sporting heroes we could have missed out on had they felt too excluded to compete. Oh and you will find out why all of Vic's favourite sports are not part of the Olympic games...yet! Some people surprise you by being supportive and sticking by you, while others find your changes hard to handle and disappear from your life. It can be upsetting, shocking and disappointing when mates turn their backs, so today on Sober Awkward Vic and Hame are going to have a chat about the intricacy of friendships and how they have navigated this tricky and emotional part of sobriety. They'll also discuss how a couple of situations at school affected how they approach close relationships now and how moving to Australia has made them realise that Brits do friendships differently... it's all upside down! So, grab your headphones and get your walking shoes on and join Vic and Hamish for a stroll into what friendships are worth keeping and which ones you need to kick to the curb!
