Kevin Colbert explained how Mason Rudolph would be the Pittsburgh Steelers' starting quarterback if the season started today, in February 2022. But Mike Tomlin's blueprint for the team might not guarantee Rudolph's position as a starter, and even if it did, there's still a path to success. Much of that is the Steelers' defense being an elite unit again around T.J. Watt, Minkah Fitzpatrick and Cam Heyward. But that can't happen unless the Steelers make serious moves to improve the defense and offensive line in free agency and the NFL Draft.
That may involve J.C. Jackson, Stephon Gilmore, Ahmad "Sauce" Gardner, Jordan Davis, Devin Lloyd and others, but the bottom line is Tomlin has the mold to make the style of a winning team that's found success in the NFL several times before, and even was shown by the Tennessee Titans and the San Francisco 49ers in 2021. But several statistics from even the Steelers' most successful teams with Ben Roethlisberger show a blueprint to winning that doesn't need much better than mediocre quarterback play if the team's defense is elite alongside a strong run game featuring Najee Harris.
