With the Great Depression taking a toll on a small Montana mining town, men are jumping into the mine shafts to take their own lives. Mine manager Tim Riley is trying to keep the town afloat, but his efforts are a source of bitterness for many, including Olivia, a miner's wife whose husband has abandoned her.
