This Game Where

thisgamewhere

This podcast where Ashley and Chris, two game fans, bang on about games from their own personal gaming history whilst failing to avoid the conversational side streets that pop up. Each week, one of the pair presents a game from their childhood in the first half, alongside a potted history of its development and any personal stories linked to it. After playing the game off-mic, the second half is a discussion of how it holds up and whether the memories of it were true after all. Ep.113 - Streets of Rage (Sega Mega Drive)
Chris and Ashley are walking the thoroughfares and back alleys of Wood Oak City, this week, in Streets of Rage. It's a game they both have good memories of playing, but does that mean it will hold up thirty years later? Listen in to find out! Ep.112 - Little Big Adventure (PC)
The tables are turned this week as Ashley chooses a game that he's never played before that just so happens to be one of Chris' favourites! Little Big Adventure is a 1994 French action-adventure-RPF hybrid set on a dystopian planet - but was it worth the decade-long wait for Ashley to play it?  Come join us on all the usual socials - follow, like, share, subscribe, rate, review and all that, if you please: Twitter YouTube Instagram Facebook Contact us: thisgamewhere@gmail.com Music for this episode is by Stevia Sphere from the album Cell Division. Ep.111 - Bart vs. the Space Mutants (Nintendo Entertainment System)
The Simpsons was laying the stage for the rest of 90s pop culture before the decade even began, and in 1991 they took their first tentative steps into the gaming arena with not one, but two different titles. Yes, everyone and their best mate will remember the arcade heavy hitter, but this week Chris and Ashley are playing a slightly lower key entry in the form of The Simpsons: Bart vs. the Space Mutants. Released across multiple consoles, the game sees Bart attempt to repel a full-on space invasion mostly with a can of spray paint. How does he do? Listen in to find out! Ep.110 - Bad Mojo (PC)
In Bad Mojo, you get turned into a cockroach and have to explore a seedy bar populated by other creepy-crawlies in a game inspired by Kafka and David Lynch, featuring FMV sequences using Jim Carrey levels of ker-azy hammy acting. Ep.108 - Ecco: The Tides of Time (Sega Mega Drive)
Chris absolutely pulls it out of the bag with this week's Mega Drive pick, which comes in the sleek and streamlined shape of Ecco: The Tides of Time. It's a game Ashley has never played, but coveted heavily as a kid seeing the superb ads in between episodes of Kenan and Kel and Clarissa (probably). But does it stand up to the relentless march of time? Press play to find out! Ep.107 - Monster Rancher Advance 2 (Nintendo Game Boy Advance)
This week, Chris and Ashley are transported to a far away land where Monsters rule! That's right, Chris and Ashley have mostly been trading in their tablets for a host of strange creatures in Monster Rancher Advance 2, a game that sees players coralling and cajoling their ranch buddies into becoming the best of the best.   Come join us on all the usual socials - follow, like, share, subscribe, rate, review and all that, if you please: Twitter YouTube Instagram Facebook Contact us: thisgamewhere@gmail.com Music for this episode is by Stevia Sphere from the album Cell Division. Ep.106 - The Stanley Parable (PC)
To celebrate this week's release of The Stanley Parable Ultra Deluxe (4/27, the same number as is on Stanley's cubicle in the game, fact fans), we are revisiting the original version from 2013. The game is unlike anything else we've played - listen in to find out what makes it so remarkable! Ep.105 - The Sims (PC)
After Chris' Rosebud drop last week, Ashley had a hankering for some of the original The Sims - so here it is! We delve deep into the myriad expansion packs available, discuss how the game strives to reflect some distorted version of real life and reflect on why the game's overreliance on Comic Sans may induce some font snobbery. Ep.104 - Max Payne (PC)
We take it back to 2001 this week to celebrate the news that Rockstar and Remedy are remastering Max Payne, this game where you solve a bad murder by shooting up loads of baddies. It's most famous for its use of bullet time and cracking script, but does it still play well? Listen in to find out! Ep.103 - Immortals: Fenyx Rising (PC)
One appropriately from the This Game Where vaults this week with Immortals: Fenyx Rising, a game that sees you take on the might of Greek myth to help out the pantheon of Olympos against a less than savoury big bad who has crawled out of the bowels of the earth. It's a real treat for anyone who likes to explore, but especially if any of the classic mythologies has ever captured your imagination. Ep.102 - Driver (Sony PlayStation)
Have you ever wanted to be the guy that gets everyone 'away' in a 'getaway'? It's definitely the main part, so you almost certainly have! This week, Chris tries to explain to Ashley why 'getting away' in Driver was a formative aspect of his childhood, and it involves another heartrending tale of lost friendship, so bring your tissues. Ep.101 - Xenon 2: Megablast (Sega Master System)
Have you ever wanted to blast your way through a flurry of protozoic lifeforms with little to no narrative reason for doing so? That's exactly what Chris and Ashley have been doing this week with the help of the Bitmap Brothers and their game, Xenon 2 for the Sega Master System. A fast-paced, chaotic take on the shoot'em up, the game apparently has the player leaping across epochs to thwart the destructive plans of the Xenites who, at least in the Master System version of the game, aren't really mentioned outside of the manual. But none of this is to say that the game can't be good, but is it? Listen in and find out! Happy birthday to us! To celebrate our centenary, we've gone off-piste to discuss what we both agree is the best console of all time - the Nintendo Wii. Ep.99 - Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge (PC)
Chris and Ashley are island-hopping this week with Monkey Island 2, a bona fide classic and one of the most venerable entries of the early 90s adventure games set. Even if you've never played it, you have almost certainly heard of it, so join us and find out why it's still so worth playing after three decades!   Come join us on all the usual socials - follow, like, share, subscribe, rate, review and all that, if you please: Twitter YouTube Instagram Facebook Music for this episode is by Stevia Sphere from the album Cell Division. Ep.98 - Elden Ring (PC)
Chris and Ashley have barely ever played any of the previous FromSoftware fare but, when the reviews started hitting throughout Thursday, Ashley started to get a little tingle he hadn't felt for quite some time and he plonked himself firmly on the bandwagon. Even then, though, he didn't anticipate that the game would impress him so thoroughly that he would absolutely have to talk to Chris about it. So, whether you are yet to set foot on the hills and dales of Limgrave, or you have already carved a bloody path across The Lands Between, press play to find out just how Elden Ring grabbed hold of Ashley so hard. Ep.97 - DC Super Hero Girls (Nintendo Switch)
DC Super Hero Girls: Teen Power on the Switch is a surprisingly good game; in this episode, Chris explains to Ashley just why that's the case. Along the way, though, there are debates about social media for children, the perils of consumerism and accidental sexism. Bet you weren't expecting that! Listen in to find out our thoughts on these - alongside discussions of the brawling, exploration and RPG elements of the game, of course. Ep.96 - Kuru Kuru Kururin (Nintendo Game Boy Advance)
The Game Boy Advance was the console that just wouldn't stop, and Kuru Kuru Kururin was just one of the places it began when it released alongside the handheld in 2001. The game is a unique puzzley-mazey affair in which a pastel-coloured flock of bird cousins is kidnapped and the lone left-behind tasked with saving them. He ventures out in his helirin to navigate through a bunch of tight corridors in the hopes that his cousins will be at the other end. We're not saying it makes that much sense, but then it doesn't always have to, does it? Listen in to find out what makes this game such a high-flyer. The latest iteration of the Winter Olympics is here, and what better reason to revisit the Mega Drive's snow-laden slice of sporting pageantry of the same name? Can Chris and Ashley take what is arguably their rightful place among the titans of mountainside sports? Or will the intrepid duo take a tumble?
