John was getting worried about his five-year-old son, Tyler Hardy. For the first three years of his life, John had been able to spend every weekend with him, despite the problems that he had with his ex-girlfriend. However, Tyler's mother abruptly cut off contact with John and was no longer allowing him to see his son. In 2017, after two years of no visits with his son, John began seeking legal advice on how to gain custody.
