Malik experienced racism from a young age initially in the care system where he was taken into custody aged nine in 1975 after his father had a stroke having committed no crime. He moved to several different community homes where he suffered varying degrees of physical and racial abuse over the years until his care order ceased at the age of 18. Soon after he was mentored by Gill Scott Heron who saw something in him that he did not see in himself - potential!
