Living in the manicured suburbs of Del Cerro–the Hillcrest of tomorrow I like to think of it as–has really done a number on me. I woke up here one day and realized I had become the guy who yells at cars that drive too fast, and sets out trail cameras to discover which local critter has been getting into the cat food.But the seedy underbelly truly reared its ugly head when I was introduced to the social media website, “Next Door,” which is an online community for absolutely terrified white people to alert their neighborhood to “suspicious persons,” or say horrible things about the little old lady whose terrier made the unforgivable choice to relieve itself on someone’s water-guzzling lawn. It’s a magical way to draft everyone on the block into a militia, and make them targets of suspicion at the same time.
