Clemson has initiated legal action against the ACC in an effort to challenge the league's Grant of Rights agreement, intending to leave the ACC. The lawsuit, filed in Pickens County court in South Carolina, marks the second such legal challenge against the ACC, following Florida State's previous lawsuit against the conference.In the lawsuit, Clemson seeks judicial nullification of the exit fee and the restoration of all media rights for games occurring after the university chooses to leave the conference. Clemson estimates the exit fee at $140 million, excluding additional costs to buy out the remaining decade of media rights. However, even if the lawsuit succeeds, there is no guarantee that Clemson would receive invitations to join either the SEC or the Big Ten if it were to depart from the ACC.The university contends that the ACC's substantial exit fee and retention of media rights upon departure are fundamentally unenforceable and restrict Clemson from acting in its best interests. In the realm of collegiate basketball, the Big 12 has been fervently attempting to entice Gonzaga from the West Coast Conference into its fold, albeit without success thus far. Montemayor emphasized the Big 12's aspiration to fortify its standing as a preeminent basketball conference by securing both Duke and Gonzaga. Further insight provided by Montemayor suggests that Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark is actively cultivating relationships in anticipation of potential upheaval within the ACC. Oregon State and Washington State have reached a settlement with the departing members of the Pac-12 conference, effectively concluding a lengthy legal dispute over the conference's future. The settlement stipulates that the two universities will receive a total of $65 million in fiscal distributions from the departing members in 2024. This amount includes $5 million in withheld revenue and an additional $1.5 million in supplemental revenue, to be distributed through June.Under the terms of the settlement, the departing members relinquish any voting rights or influence over the Pac-12's use, allocation, or expenditure of these funds. This grants Oregon State and Washington State autonomy in distributing the allocated funds, providing a significant advantage for the remaining Pac-12 programs as they navigate an uncertain future. Additionally, the departing members are barred from seeking to dissolve the Pac-12 without the written consent of both Oregon State and Washington State.The settlement includes provisions to protect the remaining Pac-12 schools in the event of dissolution attempts by departing members. If a departing member moves to dissolve the conference, the remaining schools have the right to seek an injunction, with severe financial penalties imposed for such actions. Furthermore, departing members are not entitled to any revenue generated during or after 2025.As part of their efforts to secure their future following the Pac-12's dissolution, Washington State and Oregon State have taken proactive measures. In December, both universities announced their affiliation with the West Coast Conference as affiliate members in all sports except football and baseball for the next two seasons.
