EP:8 Yakshagana | Suhas Karbha
Yakshagana is a traditional Indian dance-drama form that originated in the state of Karnataka. It combines elements of music, dance, theatre, and storytelling to present stories from Hindu mythology, particularly the epics Ramayana and Mahabharata, as well as Puranas and other local folklore.
Yakshagana performances are typically held at night and are characterized by elaborate costumes, colourful makeup, and large headgear worn by the performers. The music is performed live by a group of musicians who play traditional instruments such as the chande (a drum), the maddale (a drum played with sticks), and the harmonium.
The performances are usually divided into two main parts: the "purvaranga" (prelude) and the "muktayi" (play). The purvaranga is a musical prelude that sets the scene for the play and introduces the characters. The muktayi is the main part of the performance and is divided into several scenes, each of which presents a different episode from the story.
Yakshagana is a popular form of entertainment in Karnataka and is particularly associated with the coastal regions of the state. It is also performed in other parts of India, especially in neighbouring states such as Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. It's a living tradition with many traditional and new performances and groups that are active today.
It is also considered a sacred performing art with many religious and mythological significance.
