Most Aussies Know Harmony Day But Almost None Know Its Dark Past

The Quicky

Right now, it's Harmony Week here in Australia, and March 21 marks Harmony Day, a day where businesses, schools and organisations are told to wear orange in celebration of Australia's recognition of diversity and multiculturalism.

The federal government's website labels it as a day which celebrates "our diversity, and brings together Australians from all different backgrounds".

But March 21 is not recognised as 'Harmony Day' anywhere else in the world. In fact, it's observed as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

In this episode of The Quicky, we take a look at the dark origins of March 21.
