One of the reasons we all love the World Cup is that every single tournament seems to bring with it a big shocker. Whether it’s an early exit of one of the favorites like Germany in 2018 and Spain in 2014, a surprise scoreline like that one in 2014 (you know which one we’re talking about), or a story of a dark horse; the biggest competition in the world always lives up to expectation. Today, however, we want to focus on the dark horses. Over the years, we have had some really beautiful stories of dark horses at the World Cup. There was Cameroon in 1990, Bulgaria in 1994, South Korea and Senegal in 2002, Costa Rica in 2014, and most recently, Croatia in 2018. The dark horses hardly come out as eventual winners of the competition, but they sure do cause some exciting upsets during the course of the tournament. And the reason we love them is because it’s hard to tell who will be causing the upsets before the tournament starts. But today, we’ll try.
