A Thoughtful Conversation with April’s Midwife Amanda

Moms Off The Record

Mar 3 2023 • 1 hr 12 mins

April’s midwife Amanda made a significant impact on her home birth experience, so we had to invite her on the pod to get a glimpse into her "why" and hear her perspectives on physiologic birth and more!

We kick things off by learning about how Amanda got her start in midwifery. Amanda shares her philosophy on physiologic birth and interventions during pregnancy. The three of us discuss our theories on why women and society as a whole doubts our bodies’ ability to birth naturally. Amanda tells us about her least favorite interventions for completely healthy moms with normal pregnancies, and more importantly, why these are her least favorite. Because at MOTR we are all about bodily autonomy and empowered decision-making, we are huge fans of HBACs (home birth after cesarean) and VBACs (vaginal birth after cesarean). We learn about some of the implications and roadblocks involved in being a midwife in the state of Georgia vs. other states and share some ideas for how to find an HBAC-supportive practitioner. Also, we can’t ignore the elephant in the room— at least among the crunchy mom community— and that is the rise in MEDwives and dwindling of midwives. We each hypothesize why medwives are becoming more ubiquitous, and no; they’re no longer primarily tied to the hospital system. We wrap up our conversation with a rapid-fire Q&A from YOU, our loyal instagram followers.
