375: Memory Reconsolidation Explained with Jules Taylor Shore
Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week host Laura Reagan, LCSW-C shares about her recent experience attending Psychotherapy Networker, where she met this week's guest, Jules Taylor Shore, in person! Jules is a neuroscience nerd who is passionate about relational therapy. In this conversation you'll hear Jules explain memory reconsolidation, a natural healing process in the brain which can be interrupted by trauma and attachment wounds. Jules explains the role of implicit memory in how we function in relationships. This is a fascinating conversation about a complex subject that Jules makes understandable. Here's more about Jules:   Jules became a therapist because she stumbled into a therapist's office when she was in a hard space, fought with him for several months over whether or not feelings are important (she argued they were not), and found herself at the other end transformed. She remembers the day as clearly as if it were yesterday, when she looked up at him from a worn couch in a low cost clinic and said "Patrick, how did you get your job? I think I might want it." So, she went to grad school a bit after that. Still thought the whole thing was probably woo woo BS, and studied the neuroscience to try to prove herself wrong...and here she is. Jules spends much of her time writing, speaking, running intensive trauma recovery sessions, relational healing workshops and couples intensives, all while teaching interpersonal neurobiology to anyone who will listen. She also co-hosts "Why Does My Partner" podcast with Rebecca Wong and Vicki Easa.   Jules Taylor Shore's website: https://www.cleariskind.com/ Find Why Does My Partner Podcast here In partnership with the Academy of Therapy Wisdom, I'm excited to invite you to a free webinar offered by my colleague, Juliane Taylor Shore. 373: Ethics, Integrity, Trust + Harm In Context Of The BetterHelp Settlement Proposal
Welcome back to TherapyChat! This week, host Laura Reagan, LCSW-C speaks out about a major issue affecting those who use online mental health platforms like BetterHelp and others, and how this breach of public trust is likely to impact trauma survivors and anyone who has been abused or marginalized particularly deeply. Laura reminds listeners that we all have a voice, even when learning about abuse, as horrifying as it is, we are not powerless. In this episode Laura goes through the press release, pointing out important parts and offers some suggestions of what those affected can do.    Laura Reagan, LCSW-C, a trauma therapist located in Maryland, United States, who hosts Therapy Chat Podcast, shares important information that consumers who have used BetterHelp and other online mental health platforms need to know. Laura shares information from a press release sent out by the United States Federal Trade Commission regarding reported violations of privacy protections they claimed they would provide. According to the press release, BetterHelp lied to consumers of its services by telling them that their private mental health information would be kept confidential, while they were allegedly selling data gleaned from the consumers to social media companies and others for profit. Laura reviews the press release and explains what consumers can do, including commenting on the Federal Register post when it is made; claiming a portion of the projected $7.8 Million fine which the Federal Trade Commission proposes to impose on the corporation to punish them for their dishonest practices, according to the press release. Laura advocates for consumers to speak with their BetterHelp therapists, consider contacting attorneys regarding what legal rights they may have to hold BetterHelp accountable for these unethical actions alleged in the press release.   Laura's offering a FREE community call for therapists who working with BetterHelp to hold space for grief, anger, and action. Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week, host Laura Reagan, LCSW-C interviews Alicia Barmon, LCPC, a Baltimore area yoga therapist and psychotherapist, about breath work. Alicia combines Somatic Experiencing with breathwork to build a bridge between the subconscious and conscious mind - the implicit and the explicit... allowing trauma energy to emerge and be supported, held and felt in a new way - in relationship with the loving witness.  Her work emerges from the intersection of science and spirituality as she weaves modern science with ancient practices to create 30 minute daily practices that draw from quantum physics, Vedic philosophy, Chinese medicine, Buddhism and her deep reverence for trees and fungi.    She offers a breathwork class that has been running daily for 2 years. She also teaches the "Therapeutic Applications of the Breath' to practitioners, and she provides somatic based therapy and individualized breathwork sessions to harness the breath for personal and collective liberation. She has a breathwork handbook that will be released later this year - stay tuned...   In this week's episode you'll hear Alicia explain what breathwork is, give some examples of types of breaths, and talk about how trauma affects our breath. John has been Remote Faculty at the Institute for Meditation and Psychotherapy since 2013. Resources:   - John explains and teaches the REGAIN technique that he and Tara Brach developed as a trauma focused modification of the RAIN technique taught by Tara Brach & Jack Kornfield. - John shares about his own history of trauma and how common it is for therapists to be trauma survivors. - John compassionately describes the 5 clinical dilemmas that often arise in complex trauma therapy which he calls "Reactive Avoidance" strategies:     - Self Injury    - Dissociation    - Substance Abuse    - Sexualized Behaviors    - Angry/Challenging Behaviors directed toward the therapist - John normalizes these reactions, explaining that the client is not "bad" for acting out, and the therapist is not "bad," for having their own traumatic material arise in response when these dilemmas show up.  - John shares how therapists (and clients) can use the REGAIN technique to get back to center when the Reactive Avoidance strategies show themselves. And much more! 364: Speaking Of Dissociation - With Dr. Jamie Marich

A clinical trauma specialist, expressive artist, writer, yogini, performer, short filmmaker, reiki master, TEDx speaker, and recovery advocate, she unites all of these elements in her mission to inspire healing in others. Jamie is a woman in long-term recovery from an addictive disorder and is living loudly and proudly as a woman with a dissociative disorder with the goal of smashing stigma about dissociation in the mental health field and in society at large.    Jamie+ began her career as a humanitarian aid worker in Bosnia- Herzegovina from 2000–2003, primarily teaching English and music. Jamie travels internationally teaching on topics related to trauma, EMDR Therapy, expressive arts, mindfulness, and yoga, while maintaining a private practice and online education operations in her home base of northeast Ohio. 363: How + Why To Set Boundaries In Relationships with Dr. Sharon Martin
Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week, continuing our theme of coping with holiday and family stress, host Laura Reagan, LCSW-C, revisits a recent Therapy Chat episode with frequent guest Dr. Sharon Martin, LCSW. Last week Sharon shared strategies to help us feel empowered when interacting with family and during the holidays in general. This week she will teach us why expressing our wants and needs, and naming our boundaries can help us feel in control of our lives as the grown @$$ adults that we are. We can't control everything but do have autonomy and choice as adults. With mindful intention, it is possible to thrive, even during stressful times.    It's common to feel disempowered when we grew up in homes without our emotional needs being met consistently enough. However, as an adult, you have more power than you may be giving yourself credit for. No one can actually take that away from you. By focusing on what is within your control and letting go of what isn't, you can take your power back during the holidays. As we move into the New Year, learning to express your wants and needs and name and hold your boundaries is something that you can learn. Sharon's recommendations shared in this episode can help. Sharon will give some great tips on why it can be hard to set boundaries, why they're important, and how to do it.   Dr. Sharon Martin, LCSW is a licensed psychotherapist specializing in codependency recovery with an online practice serving California residents. For the past 20 years, she’s been helping perfectionists and people-pleasers overcome self-doubt and shame, embrace their imperfections, learn to set boundaries, and reclaim their self-worth. Sharon writes the blog Conquering Codependency for Psychology Today and is the author of The CBT Workbook for Perfectionism and The Better Boundaries Workbook. 361: Why Do I Feel So Uneasy During The Holidays With Family? With Dr. Sharon Martin
Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week host Laura Reagan, LCSW-C, revisits a classic Therapy Chat episode with frequent guest Dr. Sharon Martin, LCSW. After the November holidays, as we move into the winter holiday season, we may find ourselves feeling a sense of dread, unease, anxiety, or other feelings that are hard to name. We might find ourselves fantasizing about making the holiday "perfect" and "magical" either for ourselves or our family. Sharon explains that sometimes we are unaware of aspects of our family of origin's communication patterns and boundaries that don't really work for us. She describes some of the dysfunctional dynamics that can be common in households where there was abuse and emotional neglect.   If your family of origin relationships are continuously disappointing you, maybe this episode will help you feel less alone. Tune in next week as we continue our series with Sharon Martin. Next week she'll talk about strategies to get through the holidays when your family relationships are strained or stressful. Then the last episode of December will be about setting boundaries. Sometimes we don't realize how badly we need to set boundaries with our families until we are reflecting on why we feel so stressed after the holidays end. Sharon will give some great tips on why it can be hard to set boundaries, why they're important, and how to do it.   Dr. Sharon Martin, LCSW is a licensed psychotherapist specializing in codependency recovery with an online practice serving California residents. 360: Embodying Anti-oppression In Human + Equine Relationships - With Julia Alexander
Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week we continue the conversation on decolonizing therapy as host Laura Reagan, LCSW-C interviews social justice educator Julia Alexander. Laura and Julia first met in Fall 2016 at an equine retreat for therapists. Laura and Julia share deeply held values around respect for the dignity and autonomy of another being within a relational interaction - whether with another human or a non-human animal. Julia shared how she helps white-bodied therapists identify who are working toward embodied anti-racism, through the influence of teachers including Resmaa Menakem and partnership with Colors of Austin.    Julia provides compassionate therapy, education and consulting services rooted in anti-racist, social justice and liberatory frameworks. She offers a safe and accepting space to alleviate shame, heal trauma and discover inner resilience. Her approach is founded on an unwavering belief in the healing power of safe connection, and a deep knowing that sustained relationship to nature plays a major role in human healing. She specializes in providing eco and equine-assisted psychotherapy in the areas of childhood relationship trauma, coming out, systemic oppression, and shame held by white-bodied people.    As a social justice educator, she offers customized consulting, curriculum design and group facilitation to individuals, teams, and organizations who want to understand their experiences and beliefs in the context of systemic oppression. She combines her expertise as a therapist and social justice educator to offer a unique form of equine-assisted psychotherapy rooted in the ethical inclusion of horses in human treatment. Through this work, she loves supporting people in exploring connection, dialogue, choice and consent. 358: Justice + Mindfulness In Social Work Education - With Dr. Loretta Pyles
Welcome back to Therapy Chat! This week host Laura Reagan, LCSW-C revisits a previous interview from 2018 with Dr. Loretta Pyles. In this discussion you'll hear Loretta and Laura speaking about the process of social work education. To the listener - please keep in mind that this episode originally aired 4 years ago, many aspects of the educational process for social workers are critiqued in this conversation and there are many ways that change is being demanded and slowly implemented now. Loretta's approach is still not the norm in social work education. Loretta came to mind-body healing practices in 1999, after leaving a difficult long-term relationship and becoming burnt out from her social services and social change work. She found herself anxious, grief-ridden, and disconnected from her body, mind and spirit. Over the years, she has committed herself to a journey toward wholeness, presence, and compassion. The realizations that she later found in meditation and yoga deepened her ability to understand the ways in which oppression and undigested experiences rest in the mind-body continuum.  To learn more about these parts of herself and to experience life more fully, she practices a range of modalities including mindfulness, lovingkindness, breath work, physical poses, devotional mantra, group support, and self-inquiry. Loretta’s sensibility about transformative social change was formed during her time working in a women's collective at a community-based domestic violence program in Lawrence, Kansas.  She continues to be inspired by the insights of collective and consensus building that come from feminist and other social movements, as well as conscious communication practices. She works with public and non-profit organizations to promote healing justice and offers workshops which support social workers and activists to embody mindful practice and self-care through trauma-informed and anti-oppression lenses. Loretta received her B.A. in philosophy and sociology from Baker University, an M.A. in philosophy from the University of Kansas and a Ph.D. in social work from the University of Kansas. Formerly on the faculty at Tulane University School of Social Work in New Orleans, Loretta is Professor in the School of Social Welfare at the State University of New York at Albany.  She was Director of UAlbany’s Community and Public Service Program from 2008-2012. The National Science Foundation has funded her research on human capabilities, community participation, and disaster recovery.  Loretta's social change and healing justice work has taken her across the globe including to Haiti, Mongolia, and Indonesia.
