#55 - Horse Racing News: Eclipse Finalists, Foal Season, The Defense of Dr. Blea, and More
Lots of activity in horse racing this week as I break it all down on this episode of The Win Place Show podcast. We start in Mississippi where the statehouse has introduced a bill (HB 588) that would create a state racing commission. In horse racing news, the Louisiana State Racing Commission will meet soon to determine whether they will opt out of the HISA Lasix ban. Over the weekend, the 2021 Eclipse Awards Finalist were announced. In horse news, it’s foal season and aside from being bombarded with adorable pictures of baby foals on your social media timeline, we did see the first foals of two prominent horses over the weekend. Plus the latest jockeying news coming out of New Zealand where the racing commission is reviewing their whip rules due to an increase in recent suspensions associated with the “consecutive strides” rule where you cannot use a crop on a horse on consecutive strides even if those are the only two times in the race you use the crop. #54 - Interview with Jockey Agent Jose Santos Jr.
I am thrilled to be joined by jockey agent Jose Santos Jr who has burst onto the scene over the last few years and represents riders primarily in the Midwest and south. Jose may be a young man but he’s a horse racing lifer having come from a family where his father and four uncles were all jockeys and his father received national acclaim when he won the 2003 Kentucky Derby and Preakness on Funny Cide. Jose Santos Jr. started representing jockeys at 16 and continued to be a jockey agent while being a full-time college student while earning his degree at Bellarmine University in Louisville, KY. Since starting out, Jose has grown his operation to representing eight jockeys at several different colonies such as Ry Eikelberry at Sam Houston, Reylu Gutierrez at Fair Grounds, in addition to riders at Oaklawn, Turfway Park, and more. In our interview, I talk to Jose about how he broke into the business, how he goes about getting the best rides for his jockeys, the whirlwind around the recent hot streak of Reylu Gutierrez, what his plans are for expansion in 2022, and more. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy my interview with Jose Santos Jr. Links & Socials: Follow Matthew: @FailedToMenace Follow Jose: @joesantos_33 WPS Blogs: https://amalfimedia.com/the-win-place-show  Watch: https://youtu.be/yZIckUsFKzE  Win a $100 Williams Sonoma Gift Card: https://amalfimedia.com/giveaway  __ Subscribe, share, and rate if you enjoyed today's episode! At Laurel Park (MD) racing and training has been suspended until at least Sunday, January 16 because the track is not properly winterized. The New York Times broke a story this week that Bob Baffert and his attorneys are planning on filing a complaint against Churchill Downs Inc. Help is on the way in the form of new HISA CEO, Ms. Lisa Lazarus who was publicly named to the position on Tuesday and will take over responsibilities on February 15, 2022. On the track, there is some exciting news as Mandaloun and Midnight Bourbon are set to kick-off their 2022 rivalry at the Grade II Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds next week. #46 - Top 10 Horse Races of 2021

#46 - Top 10 Horse Races of 2021
2021 featured some amazing horse races across the country and across the world. It saw streaks broken, new faces burst onto the scene, and its fair share of “Oh, my God did you just see that” moments. When compiling this year’s list, I took into consideration several factors: importance of the race, how thrilling the race was, the impact the outcome of the race had on horse racing, and the potential longevity the race will have in the minds of viewers. Obviously, any Top 10 list is subjective and this one is no different. You’ll notice Knicks Go, the likely Eclipse Award Winner for Horse of the Year does not appear in my list simply because Knicks Go typically wins his races with such ease there is little drama unfolding. He’s truly a symbol for how the totality of his races is more impressive than any single performance. With the throat clearing aside, let's dive into my Top 10 races and be sure to share yours in the comments below or on social media and tag me on Twitter at @failedtomenace. #44 - Horse Racing Recap: Santa Anita Opening Day Takeaways, Derby Preps, and More
The Christmas Weekend featured an opening day at Santa Anita racetrack in a card that was loaded with talent and six graded stakes races. However, news broke that morning that all of the turf races were to be taken off the turf and run on dirt, which obviously threw a big wrench into several of the stakes turf races. I spend the first few minutes of the podcast discussing how you should adjust your wagers and picks when turf races are taken off the grass and how it impacted the card. Then we dive into the slews of stakes races on the card starting with the Grade II San Gabriel Stakes, which was the race most impacted by scratches, that ended up being a four-horse field. Front-runner Bob and Jackie proved that early speed is the best and was able to hold off a hard-charging Friar’s Road, who has come up just short for the third consecutive race. There are some built-in excuses for Friar’s Road coming up short this time but it’s a worrisome trend and one worth monitoring as he progresses. Tune in to today's episode for even more news.
